City Of Life And Death and Lebanon Among Batch of 69 Picks for Golden Globes Foreign Category

12 December 2009 6:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

This year, voting members will have to cover 69 picks, and slim it down to a neat five nominations and among the titles worth mentioning that didn't receive a possibility at an Oscar nomination we have City Of Life And Death and Lebanon. Unfortunately, even this list is imperfect as there is no mention of titles that were big with critics such as Women Without Men, I am Love, Hadewijch. - The Golden Globes do things a little differently than the Oscars when it comes time narrowing down the absolute best in foreign language cinema. The Hollywood Foreign press do without the politics of one film per country quota, which is great when a smaller nation has a stellar year with at least two worthwhile mentions, and just makes sense for the France film industry who on average, give several reasons to appreciate the 7th art. This year, voting members will have to cover 69 picks, …

Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 2)

Saying 'okey-dokey'/singalonga Smokey/Coming out of chokey Ian Dury When British New Wavers Ian Dury and the Blockheads were scaling the charts in 1979 with Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3), the rock group Smokie bumped into Dury at an airport and thanked him for including their obscure band on his list. Dury responded with good cheer, not letting on that his lyric referred, of course, to Smokey Robinson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD9AFG1GdgI Dury's example of keen wit, social criticism and generosity of spirit inspires the following reasons for cheer during this tough holiday season. 1. Omnivorous host John Rabe finds stories wherever his mind and feet take him, and his award-winning show mixes the gritty with the beautiful with the comical. John Rabe Review

1 December 2009 11:08 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

The big winner at this year's German Film Awards was Florian Gallenberger's "John Rabe". The film, which tells the story of how a German industrialist saved 200.000 Chinese civilians during the Nanjing massacres in 1937, got 4 of the statues (endearingly called the LOLAs) including "best picture" and "best actor".

But while I don't have a problem with actor Ulrich Tukur getting awards for his performance as John Rabe, the movie as a whole will not get much praise from me. While Gallenberger's first full-length feature film at times approaches greatness, an overabundance of "Hollywoodisms" badly mar it.

I'll elaborate, but first..:

Indie Roundup: 'Dogging,' 'Serious,' 'Capitalism'

8 October 2009 2:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Deals. Sony Pictures Classics acquired The Last Station hot off its debut at the Telluride Film Festival and plans a quick turnaround, releasing it before the end of the year and pushing its stars Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, and James McAvoy for awards consideration, according to Thompson on Hollywood. Described as a "fictionalized chronicle of Tolstoy's last days" by our own Eugene Novikov, the film's main problem is that it 'madly equivocates' on whether Tolstoy, portrayed by Plummer is, essentially, "a crackpot."

Historical drama John Rabe will get a theatrical outing next spring courtesy of Strand Releasing, according to indieWIRE. Based on the diaries of a German businessman, the film tells about his role in saving the lives of 200,000 people during the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China in 1937. indieWIRE also reports that IFC Films picked up Bruno Dumont's religiously-inclined Hadewijch and Lorber Films will distribute Nobody's Perfect, a German …

2009 Lola Winners

24 April 2009 9:54 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Inspired by real-life events, the World War II drama John Rabe won the 2009 German Film Academy’s Lola for best film. Directed by Florian Gallenberger, John Rabe tells the story of a German businessman (best actor winner Ulrich Tukur) credited with saving more than 200,000 Chinese during the Nanjing (then Nanking) massacre of 1937-38. Additionally, John Rabe, which has been a box-office disappointment in Germany, won Lolas for best production design (Tu Ju Hua) and best costume design (Lisy Christl). I believe it’s safe to say that Gallenberger’s film will be Germany’s submission for the 2010 best foreign-language film Academy Award. And that it’ll land an Oscar nomination. The best director Lola went to Andreas Dresen for the popular Cloud 9, in which veteran actress Ursula Werner plays a sixty-something married woman who rediscovers love and sex outside of home. Özgür Yildirim’s feature-film debut, Chiko, a gangster …
