Bryan Singer Returns to ‘X-Men’

9 hours ago | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Director Bryan Singer is returning to the X-Men franchise to helm the next title in the series, X-Men: First Class.

Singer had been considering the project since last summer, and told Daily Variety that he was hesitant to go back to the franchise until he had a storyline that could stand on its own. And it appears he’s found that.

Singer wrote a detailed treatment for the film, which Twentieth Century Fox quickly approved. The studio signed Singer onto the project, hired Jamie Moss to write the screenplay, and are planning on moving forward with X-Men: First Class as soon as possible.

According to Singer, the new film will follow Xavier and Magneto’s founding of the school, and show where their relationship went wrong. Additionally, audiences can expect several new mutants and an awesome villain. Said the director, “I put myself in the fan’s position, and I …

Flicks on 6 – Avatar, Up in the Air, Did You Hear About the Morgans?

17 hours ago | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Big. That’s the theme for this weekend’s movies. Avatar is enormous. Enough said. With Did You Hear About the Morgans? it’s got two of the biggest rom-com stars with Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker. And Up in the Air … well, the sky is pretty, right? And that George Clooney fellow as well.

As always with my segments on “Keep it Local” on Koin Local 6, there are things that we didn’t get to. It’s impossible to know some of the twists and turns we will take on live TV.

Full reviews and news of this week’s releases

Summit Entertainment Set To ‘Drive Angry’

17 December 2009 9:40 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of two upcoming revenge projects that Nicolas Cage has on his slate – the other being The Hungry Rabbit Jumps – is the thriller, Drive Angry. The film is about a man who sets out for revenge after his daughter is killed and her baby his stolen. His ploy for revenge soon gets out of hand as, “the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.”

As I said at the time, it sounds like the Liam Neeson thriller, Taken on wheels… Something about it must have an interesting hook, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment (who have enjoyed success lately with New Moon making serious box office bank) has picked up the North American distribution rights to Drive Angry.

The studio has set a release date of February 11th, 2011 for the revenge thriller. The deal keeps the company paired up with Cage, after the sci-fi mystery-thriller, …

Jerry Seinfield producing new reality series: “The Marriage Ref”

17 December 2009 4:24 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Jerry returns to the airwaves this spring with “The Marriage Ref,” his first series since the immensely popular “Seinfeld” signed off 11 years ago.

In a twist on real life, where a whole industry caters to ordinary people’s interest in dissecting the problems in celebrity marriages, “The Marriage Ref” will offer a forum for celebrities to comment on ordinary couples’ battles.

“After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich,” Seinfeld says.

He’ll be the executive producer of the reality show along with Ellen Rakieten, the executive producer of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Despite the indirect Oprah connection, the show’s stated goal is comedy, not therapy. It launches on NBC March 14.

“‘The Marriage Ref’ casting team is searching the country for outgoing and opinionated couples in long-term relationships, willing to appear on national television, who have a long-standing argument …

New Trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Adds Dragons(!)

17 December 2009 4:22 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Disney’s released a new trailer for its big spring tentpole flick, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (in 3-D!).  A few new things revealed in this trailer:  the plot of the film is firmly established as taking place after the original story, and chronicle Alice’s return to the titular Wonderland, for one.

Also, here there be dragons!

While the film looks visually striking from this trailer, such digital eye candy tends to be a touch overwhelming over the course of an entire film (e.g. Sin City, 300, Sky Captain the World of Tomorrow).  Here’s hoping Burton can buck the trend.

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland doesn’t hit theaters until March 5th, but you can catch this trailer in theaters this weekend in 3-D alongside James Cameron’s Avatar.  Check out the 2-D embed below:

Golden Globes Favor the Mainstream

15 December 2009 8:33 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Good news for those of you who love seeing movies, but are more inclined to see films that go mainstream rather than indie flicks: You might actually know the films up for Golden Globe awards this year!

For the first time since earlier this decade, the Golden Globe nominations are stacked far more in favor of movies that saw, or are expected to see, box office success.

Among the nominees are James Cameron’s newest film, Avatar, which opens Thursday, chick flicks The Blindside, The Proposal, and Julie and Julia, and the big hit of the summer, The Hangover.

The Globes are also breaking away from the trend of recent years in the actor/actress categories, with more big name stars receiving nominations than newbies to the acting realm.

George Clooney starrer Up In the Air seems fairly set to see at least one win, having been nominated in nine …

New Celebrity Apprentice Rod Blagojevich

15 December 2009 11:26 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Disgraced former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich is expected to compete on the next Celebrity Apprentice season. Multiple media outlets say it’s so, though NBC has not officially confirmed.

Other contestants on the series debuting Sunday, March 14, will reportedly include 80s singing sensation Cyndi Lauper of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” fame, Rock of Love star Brett Michaels and America’s Got Talent judge Sharon Osbourne,

Blago would be a natural. According to a Chicago Sun-Times story, several psychologists suggested his trademark mop of hair might be a sign of narcissistic personality disorder. That could provide him and Donald Trump at least a couple of things to bond over.

We don't need to mention what happened with the parent company, and today's press release sort of camouflages the mediocre 2009 year that is still unfolding. 2009 in review: Film

12 December 2009 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Vampires were everywhere, Hollywood failed to excite, and British cinema ploughed a familiar furrow

The year began with the usual flurry of serious major movies given late December screenings in Los Angeles to qualify for the Oscars. They're now forgotten or vaguely regarded as semi-classics: The Reader, Che, Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, The Wrestler, Gran Torino, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

It soon became apparent that horror movies would be the dominant genre once again, with vampires the pre-eminent sub-species, the most profitable inevitably being New Moon, the latest in Stephenie Meyers's Twilight saga, the best the subtle Swedish Let the Right One In and the worst the British horror spoof Lesbian Vampire Killers.

Documentaries continued to flourish, introducing us to fascinating new worlds: Afghan TV talent shows (Afghan Star), Australian exploitation cinema (Not Quite Hollywood), haute couture (The September Issue). Animation thrived, the 3-D comeback threatened …

Nautical Rock: Pirate Radio Takes Pop to the High Seas

10 December 2009 5:40 AM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Pirate Radio, the latest movie by Love, Actually director Richard Curtis, isn’t just set to music—it’s suffused with it. On a ship off the British coast in the 1960s, a pack of rowdy men (and one woman) blare triumphant rock and pop to an English audience strangled by the government’s soporific blandness. On the boat, in cramped quarters in the middle of the sea, the DJs live out some very rock ’n’ roll fantasies, with everything from The Kinks to Otis Redding always in the foreground. Curtis spoke to Paste about some of his favorite songs in the movie. “I …

Brothers Movie Review

4 December 2009 5:29 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Jim Sheridan’s new effort Brothers may never fully overcome an odd pedigree—it’s a Hollywood melodrama based upon a challenging and dour Danish film—but  it provides enough dramatic substance and top-shelf acting to justify its existence as a remake. Following the lives of two brothers, Sam and Tommy Cahill, the film documents what happens when an emotionally damaged war vet (Sam) is re-introduced to a life and family that have learned to cope without him.

At the center of Brothers, sits an uneasy triangle: Tommy, the ex-con brother, has bonded with Sam’s distraught wife Gracie and his two daughters after they received news of Sam’s disappearance in Afghanistan. When Sam comes home, he returns a different, fractured person and violent tendencies rise to the surface when he finds his brother encroaching upon all that he loves.

Everything about Brothers screams emotional manipulation and its presence …

TNT drops the gavel on “Raising the Bar”

2 December 2009 6:15 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

TNT has canceled the legal drama “Raising the Bar.”

The ratings-challenged show, starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and produced by Steven Bochco, premiered in 2008 to a strong start (7.7 million). The cable network renewed it for a 15-episode second season in June, but only debuted to 3.6 million people and was unable to sustain its audience.

“Unfortunately, ratings for ‘Raising the Bar’s’ second season did not reach the levels required for TNT to renew the series,” the network commented in a statement.

Only 12 episodes have aired so far this season. TNT has not announced plans to air the remaining three episodes.

There’s still no decision on another TNT drama that awaits sentencing, “Dark Blue.”

Exclusive: Rhys Darby Delivers a ‘Diagnosis: Death’

1 December 2009 7:42 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

There are few people out there who are as naturally funny as Rhys Darby, who you may know from Flight of the Conchords or Pirate Radio. He's the sort of guy who could even make the process of telling someone that they're going to die kind of funny. Which is exactly what happens in his latest role as a doctor in the comedy Diagnosis: Death. In the direct-to-dvd flick, Darby joins fellow Conchords Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement for a few hilarious bit roles in a movie about a supernatural force that invades a hospital for the terminally ill. Have a look at the clip and the film's official synopsis below. A supernatural force brings together two lost souls undergoing radical treatment at an experimental drug-testing facility. When the facility is locked down for the weekend and the drugs take effect, the human guinea pigs experience sinister hallucinations pointing to a horrific double murder. Unsure …

Bourne Director Walking Away from ‘Bourne 4′

30 November 2009 11:05 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Things have not been going well with the production of the fourth film in the Bourne franchise.

First off, there’s the problem of the script. According to star Matt Damon, the film has a story but no script. This is kind of right, but it’s more accurate to say that the film has no agreed upon script.

Instead, Bourne 4 (working title) currently has two scripts. The first was written by George Nolfi, who co-wrote Bourne Ultimatum, and the second was written by Josh Zetumer, who was brought on to write “a parallel script.”

As if this weren’t enough of a deterrent, nobody mentioned to director Paul Greengrass that a second writer was being brought on. Add on to this that Universal Pictures, the studio behind Bourne, is not too happy with Greengrass’s work on another film with them, and you’ve got a rather sticky situation. …
