On the last mission for a fellow dead soldier (Lt. James O'Brien), Sgt. Stanley Jefferson travels to a destroyed Bronx neighborhood to Mr. O'Brien, the handicapped veteran father, in order to deliver a letter from his dead son. Under pressure, Sgt. Jefferson has an emotional breakdown, returning him to the horrors of war and survival of the fittest.
