A talented director and an all-star Czech cast (including bit parts from stars of the Czech new wave) are abound in "Teddy Bear", but the film goes nowhere. A confused, rambling, occasionally-amusing- but-never-substantially-so ensemble piece that not only lacks a center but is also unsure of each of it's characters numerous and fragmented plights. There's an art dealer tired of his marriage but who can seem to do no better. His married playboy friend is discovered to have a second family apart from his sterile wife. Their wealthy old college buddy, now working in Rome, is as cheery as his garish wife and seems to comfortably discard her various infidelities. That's about it for development, as generally secrets are found out and the callow males turn out to be Okay people after all, but whatever it's trying to say or what it's trying to be is never apparent. A recent summary likened it to the Czech "Big Chill". but perhaps the post-collegiate buddies comparison is only apt because these characters like to talk... a lot. It's a disappointment if not a total washout, thanks to a few welcome moments of humor and the always engaging Anna Geislerova as a beleaguered housewife. Check her out in "Beauty in Trouble" (same director) instead.
