The first commercial network drama in Australia to combine its telecast with an on-line presence (as in the UK series SKINS or, in a less integrated sense, numerous ABC series including KATH & KIM and SUMMER HEIGHTS HIGH) is ostensibly a story of the consequences of political failure on climate change. Set in the near future, bushfires are threatening to engulf Sydney from all sides while NSW is in the midst of its "worst drought ever", having received no rain for most of the past year. Alas, despite incredible bushfire scenes (which deserve major acclaim from a technical point of view), the film resembles little more than, well, a 90-minute disaster telethriller. Think FIREHOUSE or, closer to home, the short-lived TV series FIRE (1995). The conspiracy element involving Premier Georgie Parker certainly reflects one popular image of politicians in this country (and the fact that she's never accompanied by anyone but her chief of staff reflects one very popular view of politics), but the only really interesting thing about it is that the filmmakers made the role a female one: perhaps if it had been male, viewers would've been too quick to interpret the character as the incumbent, Morris Iemma!
