A powerful character-driven drama with one of the most underrated lead performances from 2010, in Youssouf Djaoro. In the middle of a country ravaged by civil war, a man tries his best to keep old traditions alive, as well as provide for his son and wife, but because the war is so affective, and the people involved so bloodthirsty for new recruits, he must make a deadly sacrifice that will shake the core of his entire life. This is a beautifully realized film, and Mahamat-Saleh Haroun's direction is extremely focused, uncompromising and poignant. He often shoots Youssouf Djaoro in a variety of different angles, either close-up or from a distance, and in doing so, he immerses us into the sheer magnetic power of this actor's presence. In one standout scene in particular, he slowly zooms in on Adam (Youssouf) as he's sitting there at his new job (a job that replaced the one he considered to be his life) meditating on the miserable predicament he's found himself in, as well as his unfortunate down-spiraling life, which only seems to get worse. Youssouf's performance is unforgettable, a genuine performance that is filled with a quiet intensity usually only found in the most gifted and prestigious actors. "A Screaming Man" shows us how keeping up one's spirit and maintaining dignity and honor will always bring us spiritual satisfaction even in the midst of chaos. The war may have kept Adam and his people down, but he didn't let that stop him from making amends to his son and giving him a proper burial.
