Maya is a CIA operative whose first experience is in the interrogation of prisoners following the Al Qaeda attacks against the U.S. on the 11th September 2001. She is a reluctant participant in extreme duress applied to the detainees, but believes that the truth may only be obtained through such tactics. For several years, she is single-minded in her pursuit of leads to uncover the whereabouts of Al Qaeda's leader, Osama Bin Laden. Finally, in 2011, it appears that her work will pay off, and a U.S. Navy SEAL team is sent to kill or capture Bin Laden. But only Maya is confident Bin Laden is where she says he is. Exceeded my expectations quite a bit!
25 January 2013 | by (Maine) – See all my reviews

Everybody knows the day that Osama Bin Laden had got shot and killed, and they were so glad that he got killed after all these years. Now that we have a movie about that event, it would turn out to be quite awesome. When I heard that Kathryn Bigelow (the director of the Oscar-winning, 'The Hurt Locker') was attached to direct this film, my expectations weren't high. I still think it would be a good movie, just for the fact that it's about a recent event in history.

So, I went in, and it exceeded my expectations. 'Zero Dark Thirty' was very excellent and one of the best films from 2012.

Jessica Chastain recently won a Golden Globe for her performance as Maya, the CIA operative. She really deserved that win because she did an outstanding job. She brings keenness and a lot of empathy into her role and also knows what she's doing in front of the camera. Chastain is one of those actresses that I'll look out for when there is another movie coming out.

From 'King Kong' to 'Super 8' to 'Argo' and to here, Kyle Chandler is on the urge of becoming one of my favorite actors in a supporting role; just pointing that out there. As for the rest of the supporting cast, they did really well.

As 'Zero Dark Thirty' progresses, it really gets into an intense tone. Although the movie may drag while leading up to its climax, it held my interest from beginning to end. I never got to the point where I felt bored. I like a good mystery, and the real-life mystery within this film is provocative; not only did it entertain; it also makes the audience think. Kathryn Bigelow's direction is terrific. She handles the look and the grittiness of this real-life event very well. You know what? I think I should check out 'The Hurt Locker' some time around after avoiding it after it won Best Picture back in 2009 (kind of a long story).
