Weekend Box Office: ‘Coco’ Takes Top Spot Over ‘Justice League’ & ‘The Disaster Artist’

By the end of today, Disney and Pixar's Coco will have won the weekend for the third weekend in a row, beating out competition from Justice League, The Disaster Artist, and Wonder. This places the animated delight in a somewhat elite club of 2017 titles that have held court for three weeks straight at the box office, alongside good movies (Split) and bad (The Fate of the Furious & The Hitman's Bodyguard). At the end of its run in theaters, Coco will likely be in the top 20 box office hits of 2017, in the same area as …

Ryan Reynolds Is Detective Pikachu in Live-Action Pokemon Movie

Legendary's Detective Pikachu has finally found its title character, with Ryan Reynolds coming aboard to play this iconic yellow creature. We reported in October that the studio was looking for a big action star to voice Pikachu, with the studio reportedly having Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at the top of their list, although other candidates mentioned in that report were Hugh Jackman, Mark Wahlberg and none other than Ryan Reynolds. This report also offers some of the first story details as well.

These new story details indicate that the movie will follow roughly the same story as the video game of the same name that was launched last year. The story centers on the lead charcter played by Justice Smith, whose father has been kidnapped. He teams up with Detective Pikachu to find his missing father, with the female lead character played by Kathryn Newton said to be a "sassy

Blake Lively Says Husband Ryan Reynolds Gets to Play 'A**holes' in Movies While She Has to Be 'Likable'

Blake Lively Says Husband Ryan Reynolds Gets to Play 'A**holes' in Movies While She Has to Be 'Likable'
Blake Lively knows her gender can sometimes limit the roles she can play.

The All I See Is You star sat down for Vanity Fair's "The Limelight" podcast, where she illustrated the inherent sexism in Hollywood casting by pointing out the parts her husband can do vs. the "likability" she and other women have to maintain.

“I mean, my husband plays a**holes [but], you go, ‘He’s so charming.’ Because he is likable . . . or you look at Harrison Ford as Han Solo and he’s like, ‘Get over here, sweetheart,’ and you just sort of [think], ‘Whoo, it’s so exciting and romantic and titillating.’ It’s because he’s charming and he’s loving and he’s not some sexist a**hole," the 30-year-old actress reasoned. "But, you don’t see that and think, ‘Oh, that guy’s not likable.’"

"But you would read on a page and you just know, 'Oh, it’s a man

WB and New Line's 'It' Propels September 2017 to Record Heights

WB and New Line's 'It' Propels September 2017 to Record Heights
September 2017 saw record returns with calendar grosses topping $695 million, falling just shy of becoming the first September to ever total $700 million at the domestic box office. Leading the way was Warner Bros. and New Line's massive hit It, which delivered record numbers of its own and accounted for over 40% of the month's total gross. September is also the first month since April to show an improvement over the same month in 2016, with September grosses finishing 18.3% higher than 2016. From a yearly stand point, 2017 was pacing 6.3% behind 2016 at the end of August and September grosses helped turn things around somewhat with 2017 pacing 4.6% behind 2016's record year by the end of the month. However, with October already pacing 20.8% behind last year (as of October 9) it's looking like September's gains will be lost throughout the current month, putting additional pressure on final two months of the year to turn the tide.Overall, September 2017 saw calendar grosses reach $696.2 million,

Kingsman 2 Beats It at the Box Office with $39M

Kingsman 2 Beats It at the Box Office with $39M
As expected, after two weekends of box office dominance, New Line Cinema's It remake was finally dethroned. While it came in far lower than most projections, 20th Century Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle took the top spot at the box office with $39 million. Also as expected, Kingsman 2 easily beat its fellow newcomers The Lego Ninjago Movie and Friend Request, although they both came in far lower than most projections.

Box Office Mojo reports that Kingsman 2 opened in 4,003 theaters for a solid $9,743 per-screen average. While some had projected it to open in the $50 million range, the Kingsman sequel still managed to out-gross its predecessor, which opened with $36.2 million en route to a $128.2 million domestic debut and $414.3 million worldwide from an $81 million budget. The sequel was produced under a $104 million budget, but with its $61.2 million foreign debut, for a worldwide tally of $100.2 million, it's already very close to breaking even.

'Kingsman' and 'LEGO Ninjago' Ready to Add to September's Record Pace

'Kingsman' and 'LEGO Ninjago' Ready to Add to September's Record Pace
September 2017 is currently pacing 15.6% ahead of 2016 with a calendar gross of $467.3 million, putting the month on a record pace, $48 million ahead of where 2015 was at the same time period before delivering $626.4 million, the largest September calendar gross ever. Almost half of September's total at this point is thanks to Warner Bros. and New Line's It, which is looking to do strong numbers again this weekend, but will fall from its #1 perch after two straight weeks on top. Debuting in wide release this weekend is Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle and it should have enough juice to take the weekend top spot while Warner Animation Group's The LEGO Ninjago Movie is looking to finish in the runner-up position. Entertainment Studios' is going social with the R-rated horror Friend Request debuting in just over 2,500 theaters and likely to finish in the top five (albeit with minimal returns) while Roadside Attractions is

Disappointing August 2017 Closed Out the Worst Summer Movie Season in Over 10 Years

Disappointing August 2017 Closed Out the Worst Summer Movie Season in Over 10 Years
As the September box office attempts to get 2017 back on track*the month is currently up 14% compared to last year*the chapter ends on what was a dismal August 2017 at the domestic box office. August was the fourth month in a row to show a decline compared to the previous year, all of which contributed to the worst Summer movie season in over ten years, in which the total summer gross failed to top $4 billion for the first time since 2006. August 2017 wrapped up as the worst August in twenty years with calendar grosses delivering a combined $657.7 million from 225 movies, 35.5% behind last year's gross and failing to top $700 million for the first time since 2000. Thanks to the continued performance of Annabelle: Creation, which just topped $100 million domestically yesterday, the month did deliver a $100+ million earner, a feat that looked as if it might not happen not too long ago. Annabelle also

Can Kingsman 2 or Ninjago Take Down It at the Box Office?

Can Kingsman 2 or Ninjago Take Down It at the Box Office?
While the It had no trouble repeating atop the box office for a second straight frame in a row last weekend, it doesn't seem that it will be going for a three-peat, with three new movies vying for the crown in wide release, 20th Century Fox's action-packed sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Warner Bros.' Lego Movie spin-off The Lego Ninjago Movie and Entertainment Studios' horror-thriller Friend Request. While it very well could be a close race, we're predicting that Ninjago will come out on top with $55.6 million, while Kingsman 2 will follow just behind with $52.4 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that both Kingsman 2 and Ninjago will be released in roughly 3,900 theaters, with Friend Request opening in roughly 3,000 theaters. All of those movies will still fall short of the 4,138 theaters that the blockbuster It remake was playing in last weekend, but after a record-breaking opening weekend, and a normal second-weekend drop,

'It' Remains #1 with $60M Second Weekend, Floating to September Record
After just eight days in release, WB and New Line's It became the highest grossing September release of all-time, two days later it added another $40 million to that total for an impressive $60 million second weekend and nearly $220 million in just ten days. The horror film's performance vastly overshadowed the weekend's two new wide releases that saw Lionsgate and CBS Films's American Assassin deliver respectable results in second place while Paramount's release of Darren Aronofsky's mother! suffered greatly, finishing in third and receiving a disastrous "F" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. With an estimated $60 million this weekend, WB and New Line's It brought its domestic cume to $218.7 million after just ten days in release. As already mentioned, that makes it the largest September release ever, topping 1986's Crocodile Dundee ($174.8m). That number, of course, is not adjusted for inflation. Adjusted for inflation, however, It still finishes within the top

'It' Set for $50M+ Second Weekend, Smothering 'Mother!' and 'American Assassin' Debuts

'It' Set for $50M+ Second Weekend, Smothering 'Mother!' and 'American Assassin' Debuts
Friday Am Update: Lionsgate's release of CBS Films' American Assassin brought in $915,000 from Thursday night previews in 2,400 locations beginning at 7Pm. This compares favorably to John Wick, which kicked off its run to a $14.4 million opening with $870k from Thursday screenings. Paramount's mother! delivered $700k from Thursday previews beginning at 7Pm in ~2,000 locations, which is behind the $855k for Crimson Peak, which we used as one of our comps in our weekend preview below. It is, however, an improvement on the $520k Nightcrawler brought in before it opened with $10.4 million back in October 2014. We'll take a closer look at things tomorrow morning once Friday estimates come in. For now you can check out our weekend preview below.Weekend Preview: Following a record breaking opening last weekend, WB and New Line's It will reign supreme once again this weekend, pushing the horror film's domestic gross near record heights after just ten days of release.

Can American Assassin End It's Reign of Terror at the Box Office?

Can American Assassin End It's Reign of Terror at the Box Office?
New Line Cinema's It remake gave the sagging box office a much-needed jolt after the worst summer season in 11 years, pulling in a massive $123.4 million, which even came in $6 million higher than the original estimate of $117.1 million. The tally easily set a new record for the highest September opening weekend in history, along with the highest debut for any horror movie in history, and provided even more proof that audiences are hungry for edgy R-rated fare. This weekend, Pennywise and The Losers Club will go up against three new movies opening in wide release, Lionsgate's action-packed adaptation American Assassin, Paramount's bizarre drama mother! and Open Road Films' thriller All I See Is You. None of these movies are expected to give It a serious run for the box office crown, with the movie easily expected to repeat atop the box office with $66.2 million.

What's ironic about that projection is,
