Looks and sounds great, less fulfilling
13 July 2017 | by See all my reviews

I really want to like this series. Maybe I just don't want to look past the production values here, all of which are better than average for a major TV detective series, plus there is very fine ensemble of mostly African-American actors plying their craft with finesse and elegance, not to mention the title theme and soundtrack are some of the best, if the not the very best overall I have heard in a series this year. If that's all I cared about I'd give this series eight or nine on these considerations alone.

But like some of the other reviewers here, I write and I care about writing and storytelling. The writing style, story and characterizations here are flat, predictable and underdeveloped, the characters are stereotyped (except possibly Luke Cage, who is anti-stereotypically a post-modern anti-hero). Moreover, Harlem and New York as shown here seem too homey to be real. The camera work and lighting make the New York shown here feel like home, and the mise-en-scene says 'black people have class', which is certainly true of Harlem, but also, Harlem is part of New York City which is still a gritty, tough and unattractive city at a certain level which does not discriminate amongst races.

However, for my satisfaction, we don't see enough of that here to really make the heroic characters shine by comparison. The writing does not provide enough of a foil, dramatically, or production-wise, aesthetically, for the major characters, and that makes for a flattened dramatic affect.

The case in point is Mershala Ali as the villain. Now there's an actor that could be made fantastically complex, with the right writing and direction. But instead he appears as yet another glamorous, over-dressed, vaguely fatuous Harlem gangster-dandy with pretenses of education and culture. Puleeze. Haven't we seen enough of those on screen in the last decade or so? And isn't that a rather negative, insidious stereotype to parade? At least he should be made more lovable and more hateable at the same time.
