The world premiere of James Ponsoldt’s “The Circle,” starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, and a starry reunion screening of the first two films in “The Godfather” trilogy are among the notable additions to the feature film slate at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.

The Circle” will debut in a gala screening at Tribeca ahead of its April 28 release from Stx Entertainment. Based on the novel by Dave Eggers, the movie stars Watson (“Beauty and the Beast”) as a young woman hired at a giant Silicon Valley tech and social media company founded by a guru played by Hanks. John Boyega and Bill Paxton also are among the cast of the film co-written with Eggers by director Ponsoldt (“The Spectacular Now,” “The End of the Tour”).

Tribeca 2017 unveils Competition, Spotlight, Viewpoints, Midnight
Festival receives record number of submissions as top brass trim roster by 20%.

World premieres of Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip To Spain (pictured), Nick Broomfield and Rudi Dolezal’s Whitney. “can I be me,”, and Hell On Earth: The Fall Of Syria And The Rise Of Isis by Sebastian Junger and Nick Quested are among the line-up at the 16th annual Tribeca Film Festival (April 19-30).

Festival top brass led by new director of programming Cara Cusumano and artistic director Frédéric Boyer unveiled on Thursday 82 of the 98 features that will screen at this year’s edition.

Trimmed down by 20%, the festival received a record number 8,700 submissions, of which 3,362 were features – and includes 32 films in competition comprising 12 documentaries, 10 Us narratives and 10 international narratives. Films in competition will compete for cash prizes totalling $160,000.

Spotlight Narrative section features 15 fiction films, while Spotlight Documentary includes 16 non-fiction films. Five fiction and one documentary film play in Midnight.

Iff Panama: ‘Noeli’ Producer Reyes Preps ‘Golden Boys,’ ‘Beauty Kingdom,’ ‘Luis’ (Exclusive)
Panama City — Desiree Reyes, producer of Laura Amelia Guzman’s “Noeli Overseas” – winner of the 2nd Iff Panama’s Primera Mirada roughcut sidebar – talked to Variety about the pic and other projects on her slate.

“Noeli” is an experimental docu-feature starring young actress, Noeli, played by Yanet Mojica, who co-starred in the critically acclaimed 2014 fiction film, “Sand Dollars,” alongside Geraldine Chaplin, from the same producer and director team.

The pic follows the actress Noeli as she travels to Venice to shoot a short film, “De Djess,” directed by Alice Rohrwacher, then reunites with her mother, who works as a housekeeper in Spain. Although Noeli has always dreamed of emigrating, once she’s away from home, she senses a deep longing to return to her native land.

Guzman accompanied Noeli on her trip and filmed everything herself with a BlackMagic pocket camera, thus giving an intimate feel to the documentary. Reyes
