A New York insurance company sends in a team of high levels investigators to assess a claim related to the accidental death of six workers on an oil platform off the coast of Nigeria. As the investigation unfolds it becomes clear that the dead men were in fact taken hostage by terrorists and slaughtered. In normal circumstances the huge claim would just be refused. But these aren't normal circumstances; the insurance company has walked into a political and economic minefield. Denial would place them at odds with Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Multi-national companies working in the region would be severely punished. There could only be one solution: pay up. Keep silent and pretend. The chief investigator is left hopelessly compromised. When the film Burning from the Inside has been briefly released in 2007 Nick Peterson had to move out of London in hiding and even completely disconnect with some of the members and friends from the Nigerian tribe he interviewed for fear of his life. As the film and project focused mainly but not entirely on the problems of the women in Africa and Nigeria not to mention the "gay" problem completely ignored in Africa, some of the straight male members issued many threats and even death threats. Back in 1999 the oil companies based in the region were not to keen on the project either but in time have accepted the project as historical rather than politically motivated. Again in time many unhappy men from the region moved on from their original reactions. See more
It's indeed an impressive job description. It's a pity that none of the workers do fit the profile. Apart from a stint in the army, most of them haven't even completed their schooling or college years.
