Storyline

In 1987 Perth, Austraila, John and Evelyn White. are a pair of serial killers who target teenage girls. One night, Vicki Maloney, who impetuously sneaks out of the house for a forbidden party, is lured by the pair into their clutches. Now paying dearly for her naivety, Vicki must endure a horrific nightmare of confinement and torture at the hands of this depraved pair. Against these murderers, Vicki's only chance of survival is a mix of subterfuge, cunning, and mind games while her estranged parents and her boyfriend desperately try to learn what has happened and what can be done to find her. Meanwhile, the Whites have growing problems of their own, which could provide the only hope Vicki could have to survive. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)

Goofs

The antagonist vehicle was a VH Commodore Vacationer issued in 1983. The number plate or registration number of the vehicles issued between 1978 and 1997 were numbered 6AA-000 with black text on a reflective yellow background. The 1AAA-000 number plate series was introduced in 1997 and was styled blue text on a white reflective background. Prior to 1978, number plates in WA were numbered either UAA-000 or XAA-000 and were styled black text on white background. The 1983 vehicle depicted in the picture depicted a 1AAA-000 style number plate (1997 onwards) with black text on white background (pre-1978). It technically should have been a 6AA-000 plate with black text on yellow. Considering the amount of detail the director went into to recreate the era, this anachronism seems odd (even deliberate). Just doesn't quite have enough diversity in its story
4 June 2017 | by See all my reviews

'Hounds of Love' focuses on serial killer couple David and Catherine Birnie and the murders and abductions they committed back in the 80's. As far as Australian crime tales go this probably leans towards the lesser side of extremity (possibly a reason it has taken so long to make a movie about it), however it is an interesting enough story nonetheless. The problem 'Hounds of Love' finds itself with is that the story doesn't have a lot of diversity to it. There are no twists to be had, because this isn't fiction, it's real life. And so the movie has to fall back on its characters for variety. It actually does this rather well showing a lot of conflict between the two members of the killer couple. It's enough to keep things going, but the choice to push this out to 108 minutes may not have been the wisest decision, because things are getting a little tedious and repetitive by the end. Without being entirely familiar with the case it's hard to know how accurate this movie actually was in terms of the characters and the details regarding the ending. I would suggest some liberties were probably taken in order to make it work better as a film. I wouldn't call it a "must watch", but the quality is certainly high enough to make this an enjoyable enough viewing.
