Storyline

The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred. Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane? On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.

Trivia

The relationship between the Danes and the Saxons is thought to also be a link in language. Unlike the need for translators noted in the Vikings series, philologists suggest that the Danes and Saxons could communicate fairly well, much as a Spaniard and Portuguese can in our time with a little effort. Goofs

The standard helmet of the Danes is based on the Ultun helmet, which was used by a Swedish warrior almost 2 centuries prior to the events of the series. See more »

Don't miss it...
27 October 2015 | by (Athens,Greece) – See all my reviews

In a few words, "The Last Kingdom" is all I wanted to see in "Vikings" and I never did.

The plot is vigorous and every episode is full of twists: we don't wait around for things to happen, they happen. And they don't feel the need to keep half of the episode dull or in a slow pace, just to make some moments stand out, you won't leave your screen for a second because it's all interesting.

Acting, that was my major disappointment with "vikings", is good: let's not fool ourselves, just being intense is not acting, you have to give more to the characters to make them real people.

Although it's filmed mostly in gray, "winterish" colors photography is impressive, full of beautiful wild pictures.

The director has done a good job too, no weird or off center angles where you can't see the face of the actor and you try to guess, no jumpy cameras that make you dizzy and lose focus. The camera follows the action and the feelings and does the intended: it tells the story. Note that there are no obscene sex scenes and meaningless splatter violence.

Hope I was brief and helpful.
