Like a kid learning to ride a bike

9 out of 10 for now. Season 2 is moving me towards a 10.

The bike analogy is from the fact that at the start, the show wobbled around and wasn't sure where it was going but as it got more confident, it picked up direction and speed.

In short, stick with it!

For those who loved the comics and weren't sure about this, here's a fact that wasn't at all obvious: season 1 is a prequel to the books. I went through the entire series seeing bits plucked from later books and wondering if that meant that xxxxx wasn't going to be in the show at all.

As an adaptation of the comics, its a solid effort with some differences. The season 1 plot(s) make it pretty obvious that Preacher isn't simply going to be a scene for scene translation but it looks like the major plot-lines are going to be in there. It's definitely a bit lighter-hearted than the comics but that's no bad thing. Violence-wise it generally tends towards a Sam Raimi-style OTT gore fest in places that puts things in a more humorous / less nasty place.

For the characters, Dominic Cooper is surprisingly good as Jesse but doesn't convey the lurking cruelty and violence that the comics Jesse has. I was a bit worried about how he would turn out, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Tulip is simply fantastic IMO and Ruth Negga rounds out the character in comparison to the comics. Cassidy is... different. Not bad, just different. The goofy side is played up, his mean side downplayed but Joe Gilgun still makes him into an excellent character - it'll be good to see how things play out there. The Saint of Killers is absolutely spot on and is a definite high-point of the series.

To sum up, this is an excellent show that looks likes its only going to get better as it starts unfolding the main plots.
