The 15 Best Horror Movies of 2017

Tom Beasley examines the best horror movies of 2017, from sharp social satire to an evil clown…

The reaction to 2017’s horror movie slate has, bizarrely, been one of surprise. It’s as if a year of impressive scary movies is somehow a rarity, when in fact the genre has consistently delivered strong movies in recent years.

What is true, however, is that 2017 has been an uncommonly good year for the darker side of cinema. The mainstream corner of horror has produced its most successful movie of all time, while the arthouse world has also delivered the goods and there’s even an Oscar contender in the genre.

But first, let’s head Down Under for one of the nastiest films of the year…

15. Killing Ground

Australia is home to some of the most grim, macabre movies in modern cinema, from Justin Kurzel’s troubling true crime tale Snowtown to the tourism slasher Wolf Creek.

Disney Led the Charge in November as 2017 Looks to Close Strong

Disney Led the Charge in November as 2017 Looks to Close Strong
The year saw a lift from November box office grosses as this past month was only the third time ever November receipts totaled more than $1 billion, led by Disney and Marvel's release of Thor: Ragnarok, which delivered nearly 28% of the month's total. Heading into the November, 2017 was trailing 2016 by 5.3%, but coming out of it this year was 4.4% behind 2016 thanks to what was the third largest November ever and a 5.1% improvement over November last year. Disney led the month — after not having released a film since Cars 3 in mid-June — with two new wide releases in Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok and Pixar's Coco, both of which have been overwhelmingly successful. Ragnarok was the month's highest grossing title with $281.7 million and Coco delivered the fourth largest three- and five-day Thanksgiving weekend opening ever and generated over $82 million in its first nine days in release. Coco's total has since climbed over $135 million domestically and over $400 million globally,

Shazam! adds Ian Chen and Jovan Armand to the cast

Casting on DC’s next film Shazam! continues to ramp up as the film has added two young actors as Bill Batson’s friends. Ian Chen (Fresh Off The Boat) and Jovan Armand (Bella and the Bulldogs) will portray Eugene and Pedro respectively.

The new additions join Asher Angel as Billy, Zachary Levi as his magical alter ego Shazam, Mark Strong as Sivana, Jack Dylan Grazer (It) as Freddy and Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation) in a yet-to-be revealed role, which is said to be another of Billy’s friends.

Eugene and Pedro were first introduced in the DC story Flashpoint, which showed an alternate history of the DC world. When the company rebooted their comics line after Flashpoint with The New 52, Geoff Johns brought them over to the main continuity and gave them the ability to turn into their own versions of Shazam as Billy shared his powers with his new foster family.

Watch Saoirse Ronan, Tiffany Haddish & Nicole Kidman Star in Short, Creepy Horror Films

2017 has been a banner year for horror movies and TV shows. Things started off in a big way for writer-director Jordan Peele's Get Out, a solid and unique entry in this much-maligned genre that, earlier today, earned itself two Golden Globe nominations. We also saw new installments in horror movie franchises like Annabelle: Creation, Alien: Covenant, Rings, Cult of Chucky, and Jigsaw, plus remakes like Flatliners, along with brand new takes on terror in Happy Death Day and It Comes at Night. Some of these were better than others, of course. And then there were the …

It Reboot Places Third On YouTube’s Most-Watched Trailers Of 2017

Only Avengers: Infinity War (88 million) and Thor: Ragnarok (46 million) generated more YouTube trailer views than New Line’s adaptation of It, which placed third with a staggering 45 million.

That’s higher than even Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which garnered 42 million for its initial teaser – for the record, The Last Jedi‘s full-length trailer racked up 39 million views through Lucasfilm’s own channel. And that’s something worth keeping in mind: these figures represent the trailers uploaded through YouTube’s official channels (Star Wars, Warner Bros. Pictures, Marvel), and don’t take into account those views that were collected on third-party channels.

That explains why Avengers: Infinity War was able to set a new record with 230 million views across a 24-hour period – It, meanwhile, scared up 197m global views across the same period – in case you’re wondering why these view counts are relatively low when compared to YouTube’s other heavy-hitters.

‘Annabelle: Creation’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Stephanie Signman, Miranda Otto, Talitha Bateman, Anthony Lapaglia, Lulu Wilson, Grace Fulton, Philippa Coulthard, Tayler Buck | Written by Gary Dauberman | Directed by David F. Sandberg

Annabelle: Creation begins on an isolated patch of California somewhere in the 1950’s. The beginning shots walk us through a doll makers’ trade. Unsettling close-ups of paint cracked faces, some with dead eyes, some with no eyes at all. Wooden arms and legs dangle in and out of focus as the masters’ hand fits the pieces together. By the end, we’re introduced to Annabelle, the most hideous doll ever hand crafted. You’ve probably seen this opening creation scene play out before. Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play 2; it’s horror movie standard.

Quickly we’re introduced to the Mullins family. Samuel Mullins is a loving husband and father who makes a comfortable living with his dolls. His dolls are so popular,

Zachary Levi thinks that Shazam can be the Guardians of the Galaxy of the DC Extended Universe

Zachary Levi thinks that the upcoming Shazam film can fill a particular slot for the Dceu; one that, perhaps, Suicide Squad was supposed to fill, but obviously didn’t manage to.

At last weekend’s Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in California, Zachary Levi took to the stage, and talked a bit what Shazam! brings to the table, and what Marvel franchise it mirrors the most:

James Gunn and the gang killed it. It brought so much heart and humor and yeah, I think it was kind of like this dark horse that took everybody by storm and I think Shazam kind of has the possibility to do that because Shazam’s not, for all intents and purposes, not Supes, it’s not Batman, it’s not Wonder Woman, it’s not what most of the people [expect].”

At this point, it’s hard to believe that there was a time when

DVD Review – Annabelle: Creation (2017)

Annabelle: Creation, 2017.

Directed by David F. Sandberg.

Starring Anthony Lapaglia, Samara Lee, Miranda Otto, Stephanie Sigman, Mark Bramhall, Brad Greenquist, and Lulu Wilson.

Yet another prequel from The Conjuring universe detailing how the creepy Annabelle doll came to be.

Having now established that there is a ‘universe’ based around James Wan’s 2013 hit The Conjuring by making sequels and spinoffs about seemingly secondary characters and events mentioned in passing we end up here with Annabelle: Creation, not only the second prequel to The Conjuring but also the second prequel based around the creepy image of the Annabelle doll briefly seen in Wan’s original movie. Yes, it does seem that Warner Bros. are forcing this evil doll concept down our throats a bit but in their defence they do have a significantly creepier looking killer doll than Chucky and they aren’t about to let that particular cash cow
