Storyline

Gabriele Stoetzer and Birgit Willschuetz were political inmates at Hoheneck Castle, the most notorious women's prison in East Germany. Their story is one of overcrowded cells, despotic hierarchies, ruthless every-days, and the enduring effects of incarceration. Most of all, however, it is about the crushing pressure of forced labor. Prisoners at Hoheneck manufactured millions of pantyhose, bed sheets, and other products for West German retailers, bringing enormous profits to both sides of the Iron Curtain. Part of the young animated documentary tradition, the seven-minute film pairs original audio interview extracts with abstract, monochrome animation.

Quite moving and sad....
22 October 2017 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

I saw this animated film at the Philadelphia Film Festival and I think it was the best of the shorts. While not a great film (due to the animation quality), the story is very moving and is based on treatment political prisoners received in the infamous Hoheneck Prison in East Germany during the communist era. Harrowing stories are being recounted by the voice actors as animations show how hellish life was like for the prisoners...as well as how some western companies ending up profiting from their maltreatment. Fortunately, this era is over...but the story is great lest we forget or minimize this vicious period in German history. Worth your time.
