Ryan Reynolds intended to play the main character, however, scheduling conflicts with The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017) forced him to take a supporting part instead.

Life (2017) was released on March 24, 2017 by Columbia Pictures after being moved up from its previously announced release date of May 26, 2017, to avoid competition with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
The movie was inspired by Alien (1979).
This was the second time Hiroyuki Sanada played an astronaut. He previously played one in Sunshine (2007).
Actress Rebecca Ferguson who plays Dr. Miranda North, British, Quarantine Officer, originally turned down the role. She thought she would not live up to standards. She was nervous and scared. She told it to the producer and was advised to talk with the director of the movie Daniel Espinosa. His philosophy and ideas for the film impressed her and decided to change her decision and eventually take part in the movie.
In a TV spot commercial, it was revealed that the movie reused old b-roll footage from Spider-Man 3 (2007).
This was the second time Ryan Reynolds has starred in a Daniel Espinosa film. They previously worked on Safe House (2012) together.

This was Skydance's first project not to be released by Paramount. Instead, Columbia Pictures produced the film.
Both Hiroyuki Sanada and Ryan Reynolds have starred opposite Hugh Jackman in the X-Men character Wolverine movies. Sanada played Shingen in The Wolverine (2013) and Reynolds played Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009).
Both Hiroyuki Sanada and Rebecca Ferguson have co-starred in blockbuster films with Tom Cruise, with Sanada in The Last Samurai (2003) and Ferguson in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015).

This was the sixth feature film of director Daniel Espinosa after Babylonsjukan (2004), Uden for kærligheden (2007), Easy Money (2010), Safe House (2012) and Child 44 (2015).


The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

Despite being top billed, Ryan Reynolds has less than 40 minutes of screen time.
In the red band trailer of the movie, it subtly gives away two character deaths.
The part when jake tells a story when he was still in school watching television about the challenger mission coincidentally he portrays a character watching the television live about the the launching of the challenger mission. That movie was october sky.
