"Let There Be Light" truly shines!
10 November 2017 | by (Florida) – See all my reviews

"Let There Be Light" is a terrific faith-based film that takes the viewer (through the eyes of the lead character) from the depths of despair to the heights (and glory) of Heaven.

Dr. Sol Hearkens is an atheist who successfully spreads his message of spiritual disbelief through seminars and books. He has a large following and is well paid for his appearances. Despite some underlying emotional issues yet to be revealed, he appears to have it all: money, women, fame, and everything in between. So what's the problem?

Dr. Hearkens, like many of us, has to maintain some modicum of "keeping it together" in spite of the tragic loss of his child, his subsequent divorce and his struggle with alcohol abuse. At first glance, it appears that the perks of success and fame far outweigh the challenges of life and he seems determined to keep on keeping' on. Unfortunately, his emotional house of cards is crashing down and then...he dies. (Well, not exactly.) Dr. Hearkens undergoes a "near-death experience." You can sort the details yourself but I will say that this tragic event could be a blessing since he is forced to reconsider his position about the existence of God. So what is he to do now with his new-found spiritual perspective?

He loses his credibility as an atheist which obviously affects his livelihood. He also has to confront a new and extremely serious family issue. 'Nuff said---I don't want to spoil it for you!

I believe this is actor Kevin Sorbo's first directing gig and it's a "herculean" effort but he does a splendid job. The acting (and tension) between Sol and his wife Katie, (played by Sam Sorbo) is truly engaging---both heart-wrenching and tender. The chemistry between them drew me in and kept my interest throughout. I could relate to their pain and circumstances (and judging by the other sniffles heard in the theater, I believe others were captivated as well).

In "Let There Be Light," even the appearance of a special guest lends tremendous credence to the story, but be sure to give your full attention to the last ten minutes of the film. You won't want to miss a very poignant moment shared by Kevin's and Sam's characters, their family and friends.

I think you'll enjoy "Let There Be Light" as I did, simply because this is a film that truly shines!
