Gore Verbinski in Negotiations to Direct Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’

5 October 2017 5:10 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Gore Verbinski is in talks to direct “Gambit,” Channing Tatum’s “X-Men” spinoff for Fox.

Tatum is producing with partner Reid Carolin through their Free Association production company, along with Simon Kinberg. “Gambit” has been in development for several years at Fox with Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman previously attached as directors. Wyatt departed in October 2015, while Liman left in August 2016.

Tatum closed his deal to star in and produce “Gambit” in 2015, shortly after appearing at Fox’s Comic-Con panel with the cast of “X-Men.”

The Gambit character was created in 1990 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. An expert card-thrower, the New Orleans native has the ability to mentally create, control, and manipulate kinetic energy. Also known as Remy LeBeau, his weapons include a staff and a deck of playing cards. Gambit first appeared on the big screen in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” portrayed by Taylor Kitsch.

Channing Tatum developing bipolar disorder drama Gorilla and the Bird

According to Deadline, Channing Tatum’s Free Association has picked up the option to Zack McDermott’s new memoir Gorilla and the Bird: A Memoir of Madness and a Mother’s Love, and is teaming with Big Beach to develop a TV series which is being written by Bryan Sipe (Demolition).

The Amazon description for the book reads:

Zack McDermott, a 26-year-old Brooklyn public defender, woke up one morning convinced he was being filmed, Truman Show-style, as part of an audition for a TV pilot. This was it – his big dreams were finally coming true. Every passerby was an actor; every car would magically stop for him; everything he saw was a cue from “The Producer” to help inspire the performance of a lifetime. After a manic spree around Manhattan, Zack, who is bipolar, was arrested on a subway platform and admitted to Bellevue Hospital.

James Corden Spreads His Legs For Channing Tatum In Hilarious ‘Magic Mike’ Audition — Watch

28 September 2017 8:51 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Everyone likes a little jiggle with their wiggle, so why wouldn’t James Corden make an excellent addition to the “Magic Mike” crew? Channing Tatum isn’t so sure, but he still gave the host of “The Late Late Show” a chance to strut his stuff. In a hilarious new sketch, Corden stopped by an open call led by Tatum and his crew of Adonis-like dancers. The adorable bear had a spring in his step and a song in his heart as he attempted to chest bump, grind the floor, and strip down to his skivvies all in the name of joining the coolest dance crew in town. The results are just as hilarious as you might expect.

Before Corden even gets to dance for Tatum, however, he must convince his ripped buddy using only his persuasive charms and a long string of silly nick names. “Chan,” “Jackie Chan,” “Channy Channy Bang Bang, »

You might remember that around this time last year, “Parks & Recreation” star Nick Offerman brought to life Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” in a unique audiobook narration performance through Amazon’s Audible. Now, once more, you can listen to his lulling voice narrating another Twain classic in Audible’s new audiobook: “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”.

The 1889 novel follows Hank Morgan, a mechanic living in 19th-century New England, who (after hitting his head) travels back in time 1300 years to Camelot during the years of King Arthur. Being a mechanic living in a progress-driven atmosphere, Hank feels compelled to teach the citizens of Camelot the modern way of life. China’s Tencent Pictures Ratchets Up Role as Next Generation Film, TV Powerhouse

18 September 2017 4:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Tencent Pictures, the film-making arm of Chinese Internet giant Tencent, has unveiled a 43-title production, distribution and investment slate for 2018, including “Zombie Brother,” co-produced with Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin’s Free Association. The lineup is further evidence of Tencent’s intention to become a major content producer in addition to its role as a distribution and marketing platform.

If Chinese cinema’s recent up-and-down year is supposed to have dented the ambition of local film groups, this represents pushback by a company confident that its multimedia approach can take it much further than its rivals. Of the 43 projects, 20 are feature films; the rest are animation, TV series and made-for-Internet shows.

The announcement Sunday night at a glitzy event in Beijing marked the second anniversary of Tencent Pictures, just one of social-media-and-games giant Tencent’s initiatives in mainstream film and TV entertainment. Held at the spectacular Phoenix Center, the gathering was a tightly choreographed affair, with »

‘Get Shorty’ Review: This Smart Take on Elmore Leonard Will Make You Forget All About Chili Palmer

13 August 2017 1:39 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Elmore Leonard doesn’t make adaptations easy. The many successful films and one great TV show produced from the renowned author’s work seem to indicate otherwise, but for every “Out of Sight” and “Justified,” there’s a “Killshot” and “Karen Sisco.”

Now, after a hailed novel and two feature films, “Get Shorty” becomes the latest Leonard crime story to get the series treatment, and it’s a lot closer in quality to its titular inspiration than its lesser sequel, “Be Cool.” But aside from being pretty darn good, this take goes its own way.

Anyone familiar with the 1990 book or 1995 film will certainly recognize the plot, but creator Davey Holmes’ new show isn’t doing an impression; not on any level. From the casting to the construction, this version of “Get Shorty” is its own beast. The hour-long drama may not be the next big breakout in the golden age of TV, »

‘Swedish Dicks’ Review: Keanu Reeves is a Rare Highlight in a Detective Series Too Goofy for its Own Good

9 August 2017 5:30 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

A funny, fresh detective comedy is tough to do in any language. Many shows have tried to infuse the sordid world of cheap private investigators with some offbeat humor, but “Swedish Dicks,” the latest attempt, co-created and starring Peter Stormare, bases its story in L.A. with an international and bilingual twist.

Stormare plays Ingmar, a broke ex-Hollywood stuntman who opens up an unusually affordable detective agency. Working out of a nondescript downtown L.A. office, one particular job brings fellow Swedish ex-pat Axel (Johan Glans) into his professional orbit. After the two narrowly escape the clutches of a particularly twisty gig, they go into business together. Operating under an agency with the same name as the show’s title, these two Swedes handle their client’s unconventional requests wherever in the city they might lead.

Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Tell the Weird, Wild Story Behind ‘Comrade Detective’

9 August 2017 9:31 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt like to make “odd things” together.

“We’ve done lots of odd things just by following various creative whims for our own amusement. [They’re] not for audiences though; just in our spare time, for fun,” Gordon-Levitt said in an interview with IndieWire.

Tatum, sitting next to him, chuckled and nodded his head.

“I have a secret over Joe that he has to forever do the dumb things that I ask him to come and do,” Tatum said.

Fans can see one of Tatum and Gordon-Levitt’s odd, creative projects right now — “Comrade Detective,” executive produced by Tatum and featuring his voice work, alongside Gordon-Levitt, hit Amazon on Friday, August 4 — but it’s certainly not dumb.

Their latest collaboration is so clever, in fact, you need to unpack its backstory to unlock all the peculiar charms.
