Film Review: ‘Cold Moon’

3 October 2017 11:37 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

An eccentric mix of veteran actors, Southern Gothicism and neo-noir lends “Cold Moon” a certain charm as a ghostly revenge thriller. This handsome-looking potboiler is well-crafted on various planes, even if telepic and direct-to-video helmer Griff Furst’s mostly game-upping latest feature is also occasionally at tonal odds with the screenplay’s campier “Creepshow”-type horror aspects. Nonetheless, as guilty pleasures go, this one rates a solid B.

Orphaned Jerry Larkin (Chester Rushing) is a sober-minded youth attentive to the financial plight of grandmother Evelyn (Candy Clark) and their family’s Florida blueberry farm — in contrast to high-spirited sister Margaret (Sara Catherine Bellamy). Galavanting around on her bicycle long past when she’s due home, Margaret is attacked by a mysterious, hearse-driving figure on her belated return. He throws her over a bridge, then leaps over himself to ensure she drowns. Afterward, a coroner discovers the 16-year-old was four months pregnant.

Newswire: Christopher Lloyd and William Shatner are having a Senior Moment

12 April 2017 2:12 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Variety reports that the sci-fi star crossover of our dreams is finally happening—albeit not in the way we might have expected when we were mashing our Star Trek and Back To The Future action figures together when we were kids. Christopher Lloyd has signed on for William Shatner’s romantic comedy Senior Moment, playing a buddy of Shatner’s hotshot former test pilot who gets busted by a program designed to get “dangerous” senior drivers off the road. (We can only hope that Lloyd’s test to keep his license doesn’t include the dreaded question, “What does a yellow light mean?”)

The former Taxi star has been keeping busy in recent years, with appearances in everything from The Big Bang Theory to The Simpsons. In film, he just appeared in Morgan Freeman’s “old dudes partying” flick Going In Style, and as a suspected murderer in last year »

Newswire: William Shatner will have a Senior Moment in new rom-com

20 March 2017 9:57 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

William Shatner is boldly going where only so many actors have gone before: Variety reports the Star Trek stalwart has just boarded an indie rom-com called Senior Moment. In what sounds like an homage to both Top Gun and Space Cowboys, Shatner will play a retired Navy pilot who also happened to test aircraft for Nasa. But retirement can’t clip this maverick’s wings, as he zips around town in a little hot rod (hang on, we’re not at the rom-com part yet.) The film’s being directed by Giorgio Serafini, the helmer of such, um, lighthearted fare as Game Of Death starring Wesley Snipes and the forthcoming The Executioners. We assume there’s a meet-cute nestled somewhere in all that bloody revenge, making Serafini very much the right guy to direct a movie about a twilight-years romance.
