Sweet movie with a good message
Sure, it was a bit heavy handed. Sure, they had to push the liberal mixed race relationship. Overall a good effort. Took my elderly mother and we enjoyed it. There were kids in the theater that liked it too. I'd recommend it. Compassion is a great virtue. It shows us we have no idea of the personal battles going on all around us every day.
Meh -- fair script but pushes you to pull for drug dealer?!
OK, this is one of those movies where the lead character is a likable victim. He is shy and reserved but gets pulled into drama and makes bad choices, the anti-hero. BUT he is played as a HERO. If you disagree, you are racist?! This kid forgoes a college scholarship to take care of his baby sister (I guess he couldn't do that in college). SO, then he becomes a drug dealer. Then he becomes a violent felon. Then he betrays a close friend for money. And on and on. But we are supposed to pull for him. He lies and steals and carries a gun into a crime and ...... not a hero. Sorry -- don't feel sorry for the lifetime victim. Get a job, son.
The Lovers (2017)
It's French and that shows, almost un-watchable, did they have a script?
This is a slow, boring, depressing mess. I wonder if they had a script because lots of scenes look improvised. Winger's boyfriend is such a cad in other works that it is hard to pull for him here, playing a cad once again. It has the confusing French ending. I actually had a friend recommend this to me by saying, "we saw it in a theater with one other couple and when it was over, we all just said 'what the heck'"?! And yep -- that's the take-away. I would not recommend this movie. It is a mess with no moral compass and no highlights. We laughed once in 90 minutes at this "comedy". SKIP IT
Justice League (2017)
Great ride! Saw on opening night with a happy crowd
This one delivers! We were afraid with rumors of re-shoots and a dark tone, plus they changed directors for the last act. The original cut was deemed "unwatchable" so they went for re-shoots and added a bunch of comedy. Thank goodness because we couldn't have sat through another BVS! This one has laughs but moves right along with the plot. There is a lot from the comics in there. Overall, it was pretty awesome. I'll buy the DVD for the extras.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Top Marvel movie to date! SOOO GOOD!
OK, as an old fan-boy who owns every superhero movie ever made and a stack of comics in my closet, I have always thought the first IRON MAN movie was sheer perfection. This THOR: RAGNAROK comes close to that -- it was so good from opening scene to closing credits that I was blown away. I saw this in IMAX-3D with a packed house of fellow fans on opening night and we were blown away. There was hooping and hollering and clapping. It was an experience that I will not soon forget. They finally figured out that fans don't want a serious, political superhero -- we want fun! WELL DONE, Marvel! I'll be buying the DVD for more deleted scenes and fun.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Meh, it was OK -- seemed long and disjointed like watching GHOST IN SHELL
I never really bought into all the hype from the original BLADE RUNNER. It was a good sci-fi, explored different views than were done before. You did believe you were in that place -- built that alternate reality to life. This was more of the same but seemed to drag, there were people talking and checking email on their phones in the theater. About 90 minutes in, we all started checking out watches and talking about where we were going for dinner after. It was good, I won't be buying the DVD. Some of the violence seemed very forced, like the scene with the naked woman -- just out of place. I'd recommend this as a rental.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
Entertaining but the language is very bad
I liked this one better than the first because it didn't have the church scene but still, the language is awful. Think James Bond but with 500 F-words and you have it. It is a shame because this series could have tripled its viewership without the unnecessary bad language. I liked the globe trotting and the use of the US branch of the Kingsmen in this one. It introduced some great new characters. I'm sure they'll keep making them because it is an entertaining ride.
The Glass Castle (2017)
A hard movie to watch but a strong message
The message I took away from this movie was that we are all flawed and you have to look for the good to get through the bad. It will win awards because it is dark and depressing and about abuse and alcohol addiction and the struggle against "the man". Harrelson does a great job as a drunk veteran living on the underbelly of America, moving around the country, one step ahead of his creditors and dragging an ever-growing family with him. It is a movie about failure and redemption. Probably one of the worst date movies ever made. Definitely a chick flick.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Yuck! Sex with children? Liberals will give this one awards
Critics are drooling this fall over the Sundance hit, a drama about a 17-year-old male student living with his parents in Italy who's wooed into a homosexual relationship by a 24-year-old grad student played by Armie Hammer. None of the reviews from the major publications seemed to even notice this age discrepancy.
At least one homosexual author, Chad Felix Greene, has come out against the movie's promotion of sexual relationships between men and boys. He wrote, For me it is simply an issue of responsible adult decision-making. When an adult has sex with a teenager, they are being selfish, fulfilling their own temporary desires. They do not recognize or possibly even care about the impact that encounter can have on a very young and impressionable mind trapped between finding security in who they are and assuming more wisdom than they currently have. Greene came under fire from the left for his comments. Many people argued that the legal age of consent in Italy is 14 (as if that had anything to do with objective moral values and ethics).
The sheer number of people arguing in favor of an age of consent at 14 should be enough of a wake-up call."
Good concept but show is getting boring going into the second season
They are going to have to bring in something new or I'm not going to get through this. The first few episodes were good and it seems to have legs but the cheesy special effects and silliness are starting to wear on me. We've seen it before in HEROES and others ... powers walk among us. There is a police force that deals with them. I'm interested in seeing how it plays out but am I 20 hours of my life interested?
