My cast for a BATMAN live-action TV show

by Cyke | created - 15 Mar 2012 | updated - 27 Aug 2013 | Public

Batman is the A-list hero who translates most naturally to live-action TV. He's a street-level superhero with gadgets and martial arts as his powers, and even most of his iconic rogues are guys in sharp suits. Here are my picks for all the characters who would likely appear in the first two or three seasons.

1. Jared Padalecki

Actor | Supernatural

Jared Padalecki was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Sherri (Kammer), a teacher of English, and Gerald Padalecki, a tax accountant. He is of Polish (father) and German, English, Scottish, and French (mother) descent. Jared started to take acting lessons when he was 12. Then, he won the "Claim to Fame...

as Bruce Wayne/Batman

Padalecki's got it all, the chiseled features, the voice, the presence, the acting chops, and he’s turned in years of dedicated service for the WB.

2. Anthony Daniels

Actor | Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Initially not a science fiction fan, theatre actor Anthony Daniels was persuaded by his agent to meet George Lucas for the casting of C-3PO in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). He went on to perform the character, both his voice and body in the suit, for all the episodic Star Wars films ...

as Alfred Pennyworth

I love this pick. After almost thirty five years of playing the same robot, it’d be awesome to see him take on another iconic role and nail it immediately. What's more, I think that Alfred (being a retired British operative) should be more George Smiley than James Bond; gentlemanly, mild-mannered and highly perceptive.

3. Bruce Boxleitner

Actor | Babylon 5

As one of Hollywood's leading men, Bruce Boxleitner has starred in a major motion picture franchise, numerous feature films, and several popular television series, produced a major network film and TV series, performed on Broadway, and authored two science fiction novels.

Boxleitner received his ...

as Jim Gordon

A lot of fans like Bryan Cranston for the role, but Boxleitner is my pick. He has that aging good guy vibe and loads of built-in geek cred. Plus he’s got a voice aged like fine scotch.

4. Michael Mosley

Actor | Ozark

Michael Mosley has been bringing characters to life in film, television, and on stage for the past decade. Mosley can currently be seen starring on the USA series "Sirens," created by Denis Leary and Bob Fisher. The comedy based on the BBC show of the same name, follows three fast, ball-busting ...

as Harvey Dent/Two-Face

Dent would be another regular for the first part of the series, and when he becomes Two-Face he would be the new Big Bad. He should be a Harrison Ford-type, a guy who can be laid back and dashing one minute and stone-cold badass the next. Mosley fits both surprisingly well. Plus, he was originally one of my picks for Bruce, which is great because the whole "is Harvey Dent Batman?" subplot would definitely come up.

5. Lauren Cohan

Actress | The Boy

Lauren Cohan is a British-American actress and model, best known for her role as Maggie Greene on The Walking Dead (2010) and recurring roles on The Vampire Diaries (2009), Supernatural (2005), and Chuck (2007). After her film debut on Casanova (2005) as Sister Beatrice, she starred in the sequel ...

as Selina Kyle/Catwoman

Between "Supernatural", "Chuck", and "Vampire Diaries", Cohan is carving out quite a niche of morally ambiguous bombshells lately. Which is great because Selina should be the Damon Salvatore of a show like this, someone who can't be pegged as a hero or a villain. And she should be a regular character with major development over the course of the series.

6. Callan McAuliffe

Actor | Flipped

Callan McAuliffe (24) was educated at The SCOTS College in Sydney, Australia. As a teenager he topped the Trinity College (London) Musical Theatre Exams as well as variety of Drama Scholarships. He studied with The Sydney Theatre Company via Mr Alan Flower and Screenwise. These combined to open the...

as Dick Grayson/Robin

It’s hard to avoid teen-heartthrob territory when casting Robin. So I say just embrace it. I’d start Dick Grayson off at about 15 or 16 and go from there. McAuliffe fits the role nicely and played a good not-annoying sidekick in ‘I Am Number Four’.

7. Molly C. Quinn

Actress | Castle

Molly Quinn, popularly known as Molly C. Quinn, is an American actress who is well known among the television audiences for playing the character of Alexis Castle, the daughter of the lead character in the American crime-comedy-drama television series Castle (2009) which aired on ABC. She started ...

as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl

Batgirl is another character it would be great to develop over time, starting out practically as a background character in the first season and evolving into a full-fledged superhero later on. Quinn is simply radiant on “Castle” and it’s fun to imagine that type of character eventually delving into some extracurricular badassery.

8. Clarke Peters

Actor | The Wire

Clarke Peters was born on April 7, 1952 in New York City, New York, USA as Peter Clarke. He is an actor and producer, known for The Wire (2002), Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) and John Wick (2014). He is married to Penny. They have one child.

as Lucius Fox

Lucius would probably appear frequently on a prime-time show, and I can easily buy my favorite actor from "The Wire" as a man with history with Bruce Wayne.

9. David Morse

Actor | The Green Mile

David Morse, a 6' 4" tall blue-eyed blond who performed on stage for 10 years before breaking into film, has become established as a respected supporting, character actor and second lead.

He was born the first of four children of Charles, a sales manager, and Jacquelyn Morse, a schoolteacher, on ...

as Carmine "The Roman" Falcone

Morse is a towering presence who barely needs to raise his voice to sound intimidating. Perfect for an old-fashioned crime boss. Taking many cues from "Year One" and "Long Halloween", Falcone would be the show's first overarching Big Bad, until his empire is toppled by the freaks like Joker and Two-Face.

10. Autumn Reeser

Actress | Sully

Autumn Reeser is an American actress born in Southern California to Kim and Tom Reeser. She and her younger sister, Melissa, were raised in Carlsbad and Oceanside in a home that valued and respected the arts. Melissa became a prolific writer/poet and Autumn performed in numerous musicals with the ...

as Vicki Vale

It’s time to bring back Vicki Vale. The idea of a reporter trying to get the scoop on the Dark Knight is good meat for a prime time series. Reeser was by far the best thing about the lackluster “No Ordinary Family”, which is important for a character as potentially annoying as Vicki.

11. Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Actor | Watchmen

Jeffrey Dean Morgan endeared himself to audiences with his recurring role on ABC's smash hit series, Grey's Anatomy (2005). His dramatic arc as heart patient "Denny Duquette", who wins the heart of intern "Izzie Stevens" (Katherine Heigl) in a star-crossed romance, made him a universal fan favorite...

as Slam Bradley

Morgan would be fantastic as everyone’s favorite badass over-the-hill PI.

12. Dania Ramirez

Actress | X-Men: The Last Stand

Dania is a Latin American actress born in the Dominican Republic. She grew up, living with her grandmother, in a poor household. Her parents left for the United States, when she was 6-months old, and she finally joined them in New York when she was age 10.

She knew from a young age that she wanted ...

as Officer/Det. Renee Montoya

Anyone who kicks the crap out of Halle Berry is all right in my book. And she’s Dominican too! How sweet is that!

13. Wade Williams

Actor | Ken Park

Wade Williams was born on December 24, 1961 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA as Wade Andrew Williams. He is an actor, known for Ken Park (2002), Gangster Squad (2013) and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (2012). He is married to Emma. They have one child.

as Det. Harvey Bullock

Williams is perfect. He’s already a DC fan (he’s even acted in a couple of their DTVs) and he fills out the role as the gruff, abrasive detective.

14. Ellen Burstyn

Actress | Requiem for a Dream

Ellen Burstyn was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Correine Marie (Hamel) and John Austin Gillooly. She is of mostly Irish, German, and French-Canadian descent. Ellen worked a number of jobs before she became an actress. At 14, she was a short-order cook at a lunch counter. After graduating from ...

as Leslie Thompkins

She’s 78? Seriously? Anyhow, Leslie would fulfill an emotional and moral counterpoint for Bruce similar to Rachel Dawes in the movies, but more maternal and less love-interest-y. And you can’t aim much higher than an Oscar-nominee like Burstyn.

15. Aaron Paul

Actor | Breaking Bad

Aaron Paul was born Aaron Paul Sturtevant in Emmett, Idaho, to Darla (Haynes) and Robert Sturtevant, a retired Baptist minister. While growing up, Paul took part in church programs, and performed in plays.

He attended Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho. It was there, in eighth grade, that Aaron ...

as The Joker

To play the Clown Prince of Crime, you need a great actor with good comedic timing and a lot of range. Paul is constantly amazing on “Breaking Bad”, often funny and captivating at the same time.

16. Rose McIver

Actress | The Lovely Bones

Rose McIver is an actress from New Zealand. She is the daughter of John George Whitfield "Mac" McIver and Ann "Annie" Coney. Her father is a professional photographer, while her mother is an artist. Rose has an older brother, musician Paul McIver.

When only 2-years-old, McIver started appearing in ...

as Harley Quinn

Harley is the kind of juicy role that I think a lot of young actresses would try to land. Rose McIver has the physical prowess covered and has far more range than one might expect from a former Power Ranger.

17. Willie Garson

Actor | White Collar

Rarely at a loss for work, Garson has appeared in over 300 episodes of television and more than 70 films. Best known for his long runs on television, as Mozzie on "WHITE COLLAR", Stanford Blatch on "SEX AND THE CITY", and Henry Coffield on "NYPD BLUE". He appears as the grifter with a heart of gold...

as Oswald Copplepot/The Penguin

Garson’s a great character actor and plays a fantastic likeable lowlife on “White Collar”. He’d be a perfect fit for a strangely charming scumsmear like Penguin.

18. James Callis

Actor | Battlestar Galactica

James Callis was born on June 4, 1971 in London, England. He is an actor and writer, known for Battlestar Galactica (2004), Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) and Austenland (2013). He has been married to Neha Callis since December 30, 1998. They have three children.

Edward Nygma/The Riddler

Callis is great with the smug insufferable magnificent bastard that a live-action Riddler would likely be. The TAS version would be the perfect approach to the character, plus longer prime-time episodes would mean more wiggle room for the really crazy plots TAS couldn’t pull off.

19. Evan Rachel Wood

Actress | Thirteen

Evan Rachel Wood was born September 7, 1987, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her father, Ira David Wood III, is a theatre actor, writer and director, and her mother, Sara Wood, is an actress and acting coach. She has two older brothers--Dana Wood, a musician, and Ira David Wood IV, who has also acted. ...

as Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy

Skewing a bit young with Ivy, but ERW is such a wonderfully nuanced actress yet still knows when to camp it up and bring the crazy.

20. Mark Pellegrino

Actor | The Big Lebowski

Mark Pellegrino was born on April 9, 1965 in Los Angeles, California, USA as Mark Ross Pellegrino. He is an actor and producer, known for The Big Lebowski (1998), National Treasure (2004) and The Number 23 (2007). He has been married to Tracy Pellegrino since October 30, 2008. They have two ...

as Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow

There are a lot of actors who could pull off Crane (who could appear on several episodes before becoming Scarecrow), but I really like Pellegrino for the role. He's really cornering the market on soft-spoken dead-eyed creeps.

21. Tobin Bell

Actor | Saw

Tobin Bell is an American actor with a career in film, television and theater spanning three decades. He was born in Queens, New York and raised in Weymouth, Mass. His mother is the British actress Eileen Bell. He is perhaps best known for his role as the iconic villain "Jigsaw" in the Saw film ...

as Mr. Freeze

The role may be a tad physical for a guy his age, but good God that voice. Say whatever you want about the ‘Saw’ movies, but can you imagine that Jigsaw voice topped off with some freaky Darth Vader robotics?

22. Kevin Durand

Actor | X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Kevin Durand was born on January 14, 1974 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada as Kevin Serge Durand. He is an actor, known for X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), I Am Number Four (2011) and Robin Hood (2010). He has been married to Sandra Cho since October 1, 2010.

as Killer Croc

Croc is one of the trickier rogues to pull off in live action (especially on a TV budget), but Durand’s hulking frame and creepy demeanor would get them more than half-way there.

23. Jared Harris

Actor | Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Jared Francis Harris was born in London, England. He is the son of Irish actor Richard Harris and Welsh actress Elizabeth Harris (Elizabeth Rees), and brother of Damian Harris and Jamie Harris. Despite his lineage, Jared showed little interest in becoming an actor, until he was cast in a college ...

as Dr. Hugo Strange

Strange only appeared once on TAS but seems better suited to make his mark on a live-action show. Harris did a great evil scientist shtick on “Fringe” and 'Sherlock Holmes 2'.

24. Simon McBurney

Actor | Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Simon McBurney was born on August 25, 1957 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England as Simon Montagu McBurney. He is an actor and writer, known for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), The Last King of Scotland (2006) and The Conjuring 2 (2016).

as Jervis Tetch/The Mad Hatter

Another English character actor; he’s got the look for whatever iteration the show would do, though I wonder how well he could pull of the lovelorn ex-labgeek version from TAS.

25. Colin Mochrie

Actor | Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Colin Andrew Mochrie was on born November 30, 1957, in Kilmarnock, Scotland. His father, an airline maintenance executive, moved the family to Montreal, Canada, in 1964, and finally to Vancouver in 1969. When asked about his childhood, Mochrie said he tended to be a bit of a loner because of moving...

as The Ventriloquist

Not sure about his ventriloquism skills, but the “Whose Line” veteran has the right look and comedy chops to pull of one of Batman’s more oddball rogues.

26. Yun-Fat Chow

Actor | Wo hu cang long

Chow Yun Fat is a charismatic, athletically built and energetic Asian-born film star who first came to the attention of western audiences via his roles in the high-octane/blazing guns action films of maverick HK director John Woo.

Chow was born in 1955 on the quiet island of Lamma, part of the ...

as Ra's Al Ghul

This one needs star power. On a TV show, he’s the kind of villain that they would build up to for a long time before we finally see him, much like Darkseid on “Smallville”. When we DO see him, he has to exude menace and authority from the moment he walks in.

In addition, Ra's is the most race-liftable villain in the Batman canon, so there's a wide range of well-known actors who could pull him off. I picked Chow Yun-Fat because he fits best with my pick for Talia.

27. Dichen Lachman

Actress | Altered Carbon

Dichen Lachman was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, to a Tibetan mother and Australian father. Until the age of seven, she lived in Kathmandu with her parents and extended family. Following that, she moved to Adelaide, Australia, with her parents. After dropping out of university, Dichen took up acting ...

as Talia Al Ghul

If we’re gonna play race-lift for Ra’s, it’s only fair we do it for Talia as well. I've loved Dichen Lachman in just about everything, and she could strike a good Bond-girl vibe for a character like Talia.

28. Tania Raymonde

Actress | Lost

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tania Raymonde began her career on Malcolm in the Middle (2000), and is known for her portrayal of Alex Rousseau in the J.J. Abrams series Lost. She played the title role of notorious murderer Jodi Arias in the Lifetime original feature Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret...

as Helena Bertinelli/The Huntress

The last three are bonus picks, as they probably wouldn't appear until well into the series.

29. Maggie Q

Actress | Divergent

Margaret Denise Quigley was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a father of Polish and Irish descent (originally based in New York) and a Vietnamese mother. Her parents met during the Vietnam War. Maggie has two older half-siblings from her mother's previous marriage, and two older sisters. The family ...

as Lady Shiva

30. Deborah Ann Woll

Actress | True Blood

Deborah was born in 1985, in Brooklyn, New York, from Irish and German heritage. She took acting, piano and dance classes. She went to high school at Packer Collegiate Institute and graduated from the BFA program at the USC School of Theatre at the University of Southern California.

Deborah started ...

as Kate Kane/Batwoman
