1. Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009)

This SciFi Channel reboot outstripped the original 1978 series in so many ways. The 'feel' of it was nice and gritty, not sterilized for easy assimulation. This is science fiction for thinkers.

An entry from South Africa, this show about multiple universes and corporate scheming ranks VERY high on my list of great shows to watch. If you love science fiction, this is one show you have to watch before you die.

3. Space Island One (1998– )

The series is set aboard the corporate space station Unity and is a character driven drama about the station's crew.

A British sci fi show that WASN'T Dr Who. This was a drama set aboard the space station Unity, purely character-driven sci fi. No aliens or monsters, but great writing and acting. Another must-see show.

An Australian 'kid show', heavy on the ecology in harmony with technology vibe. This 20 year old TV show still has a lot to teach kids today. Definitely show this to your kids, or in my case, the grandkids!

Another Australian 'kid show', this one explores the concept behind time travel and the 'Grandfather Paradox' in the original series and the following series, 'Tomorrow's End'. Again, watch this with your kids/grandkids.

A light-hearted romp 500 years in the future, where humans have been chased underground by the biomechanical 'Baileys'. This show chronicles the adventures of one of several 'Voice teams' when an exotic dancer from the 20th century stage-named Cleopatra awakens 500 years after her breast augmentation surgery and joins it to fight for mankind's future. This is sci fi entertainment, light viewing after a rough day at the office.

7. Continuum (I) (2012–2015)

A free 'web series' on a very low budget, Pioneer One still shows a great story when a Soviet-era Soyuez capsual returns to Earth. From MARS. Currently filming Season 2, this is one show to watch!

Set in a corporate dystopia, this Showtime series was definitely watchable. Also known as Total Recall 2070, it's a science fiction 'buddy cop' show where one of the partners is an 'Alpha-class android' of unknown origin.

Somewhat dated but excellent British sci fi series about the lives and adventures of the ESA Moonbase, Moonbase 3. The smallest and least-funded of the 5 bases, the stories are plot-driven and believable.

A low-budget adaptation of the Neil Gaiman book. Just goes to show you don't need a 100 megabuck budget to tell a great story. Technically, it's fantasy not sci fi, but I included it anyways because it fits sci fi as well.
