Ranking 2016 Films

by HandsomeJawa | created - 01 Apr 2018 | updated - 3 days ago | Public

I've got catching up to do, but what a year. Shane Black cashes his IM3 blank check for a magnum opus, Denis Villenueve with a potential 10/9 upon rewatch, and some great, interesting animation touching down. Seriously: Your Name, Nuts, Kubo, Red Turtle, Zootopia, Moana, 2 Kizumonogatari films... the list goes on. We need more years like this for animation.

Among the wittiest, funniest films I've ever seen. The character writing is top notch and the whole thing is exceedingly fun to watch.

Votes: 506,788 | Gross: $100.55M

Just... wow. So many ideas about language, time, connection, communication and more rolled into one. It's so smart, so brilliantly plotted, that I can't believe it. This fills me with energy.

3. Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)

Votes: 104,304 | Gross: $48.02M

Beautiful animation elevates the adventure tenfold. The story could have stood to be a little more vague, but I'd be hard pressed to say it's unenjoyable.

A delightful little film that's good fun to watch. Rushes in the beginning and that causes the emotions to stumble, but finds its footing before it becomes a problem.

In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

Directors: Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush | Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate

Votes: 378,065 | Gross: $341.27M

A fun world explored by two great leads. The central mystery is not as strong as I'd like, but given all the good in this movie, that's not the worst thing in the world.

7. Moana (I) (2016)

PG | 107 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Stellar performances from McAvoy. A suspenseful thriller, but a good chunk of the dialogue felt off at times. Not enough to bring down the movie much, though.

Votes: 1,148

Shockingly great visuals, spiced up with unique directing. A minimal story so far, but it's still fun.

13. Deadpool (2016)

Votes: 809,516 | Gross: $363.07M

Hilarious. Even as the comedy fades on repeated viewings, Reynolds' performance never fails to entertain. The film itself could stand to be spiced up a bit more directing-wise.

14. Hidden Figures (2016)

Votes: 95,882 | Gross: $12.79M

An asshole screws over two like-able guys, but the asshole is our lead. Keaton's performance is solid, and even carries the film in a few places.

72 Metascore

While on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts.

Director: Scott Derrickson | Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong

Votes: 496,276 | Gross: $232.64M

Possibly my favorite action in the MCU. Gets a lot of mileage out of it's concepts, but doesn't go beyond a lot of the failings I've already seen in other Marvel films.

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Valerie Mahaffey

Votes: 199,894 | Gross: $125.07M

Smart use of its premise that I wish more biopics could emulate. Hanks is a standout performance for the film.

20. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

PG-13 | 133 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

66 Metascore

The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York's secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler

The characters are absurdly like-able, but the plot kinda falls apart after one too many twists.

The opening is the strongest part of the film, and I'm a sucker for bittersweet endings too.

88 Metascore

A divorced father and his ex-con older brother resort to a desperate scheme in order to save their family's ranch in West Texas.

77 Metascore

The friendly but forgetful blue tang fish, Dory, begins a search for her long-lost parents, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.

Directors: Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane | Stars: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O'Neill, Kaitlin Olson

There are fun moments, but the film really has a hard time justifying its own existence to me.

Storks have moved on from delivering babies to packages. But when an order for a baby appears, the best delivery stork must scramble to fix the error by delivering the baby.

Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband's historic legacy.

Director: Jay Oliva | Stars: Jason O'Mara, Yvonne Strahovski, Stuart Allan, Sean Maher

Votes: 16,457

It's okay overall but no part of it really stands out as noteworthy to me. It's also just kinda mean for the majority of its run, not really making the ending feel earned.

An unexpected affair quickly escalates into a heart-stopping reality for two women whose passionate connection changes their lives forever.

This is basically just lesbian porn put to a barebones plot. But it's solid lesbian porn at least.

Aside from a few moments with The Rock, not a lot of this was very funny at all.

Directors: Garth Jennings, Christophe Lourdelet | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson

Votes: 114,063 | Gross: $270.40M

Bad animation, barebones plot and characters. Juggling 6 stories at once is hard, I know, but you could at least try to make this work. Or, you know, not give away everything in the trailers.

34. Suicide Squad (2016)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

40 Metascore

A secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse.

Director: David Ayer | Stars: Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis

Votes: 525,795 | Gross: $325.10M

Every single thing about this movie is terrible, save one creative effect. I don't like the characters, the story is a mess, and it's soooo boring on top of that.
