I've got catching up to do, but what a year. Shane Black cashes his IM3 blank check for a magnum opus, Denis Villenueve with a potential 10/9 upon rewatch, and some great, interesting animation touching down. Seriously: Your Name, Nuts, Kubo, Red Turtle, Zootopia, Moana, 2 Kizumonogatari films... the list goes on. We need more years like this for animation.

In 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star.
Votes: 237,051 | Gross: $36.26M
Among the wittiest, funniest films I've ever seen. The character writing is top notch and the whole thing is exceedingly fun to watch.

A linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.
Votes: 506,788 | Gross: $100.55M
Just... wow. So many ideas about language, time, connection, communication and more rolled into one. It's so smart, so brilliantly plotted, that I can't believe it. This fills me with energy.

A young boy named Kubo must locate a magical suit of armour worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past.
Votes: 104,304 | Gross: $48.02M
Beautiful animation elevates the adventure tenfold. The story could have stood to be a little more vague, but I'd be hard pressed to say it's unenjoyable.

A national manhunt is ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.
Votes: 86,284 | Gross: $5.20M
A delightful little film that's good fun to watch. Rushes in the beginning and that causes the emotions to stumble, but finds its footing before it becomes a problem.
5. The Red Turtle (2016)
PG | 80 min | Animation, Fantasy
A man is shipwrecked on a deserted island and encounters a red turtle, which changes his life.
Votes: 24,648 | Gross: $0.92M
A beautiful film, though a touch slow it's never boring. Something to sit back and drink in just how different it is.

In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.
Votes: 378,065 | Gross: $341.27M
A fun world explored by two great leads. The central mystery is not as strong as I'd like, but given all the good in this movie, that's not the worst thing in the world.
7. Moana (I) (2016)

In Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.

The music is among my favorite in recent Disney memory, and it's coupled with characters to back it up and an overall great adventure.

A relationship between two high school second years, Licht Sajo, who is an honor student, and Hikaru Kusakabe, who plays in a rock band.
A lovely little romance with great art/animation and a few clever moments that never fail to put a smile on my face.

Votes: 346,985 | Gross: $138.29M
Stellar performances from McAvoy. A suspenseful thriller, but a good chunk of the dialogue felt off at times. Not enough to bring down the movie much, though.

In the spring of his second year of high school, Koyomi Araragi met the beautiful vampire Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade. Koyomi saved Kiss-shot, who was on the verge of death ... See full summary »
Ups the bar from the previous movie, with even more cute, funny and badass moments.

64 min | Animation, Action, Comedy
Follows Araragi's encounter with the vampire Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade and his journey back into humanity from being a vampire.

A wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal but ugly, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.
Votes: 809,516 | Gross: $363.07M
Hilarious. Even as the comedy fades on repeated viewings, Reynolds' performance never fails to entertain. The film itself could stand to be spiced up a bit more directing-wise.
14. Hidden Figures (2016)
PG | 127 min | Biography, Drama, History
The story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.

Overall solid. All three characters are basically struggling with the same thing, but it doesn't lose interest throughout the film.

The story of Ray Kroc, a salesman who turned two brothers' innovative fast food eatery, McDonald's, into the biggest restaurant business in the world, with a combination of ambition, persistence, and ruthlessness.
Votes: 95,882 | Gross: $12.79M
An asshole screws over two like-able guys, but the asshole is our lead. Keaton's performance is solid, and even carries the film in a few places.

While on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts.
Votes: 496,276 | Gross: $232.64M
Possibly my favorite action in the MCU. Gets a lot of mileage out of it's concepts, but doesn't go beyond a lot of the failings I've already seen in other Marvel films.

Unrated | 79 min | Documentary, Animation
The mostly true story of Dr. John Romulus Brinkley, an eccentric genius who built an empire with his goat-testicle impotence cure and a million-watt radio station.

Cooky fun if you're willing to let it be. You can tell everyone working on it is having a great time.

The story of Chesley Sullenberger, an American pilot who became a hero after landing his damaged plane on the Hudson River in order to save the flight's passengers and crew.
Votes: 199,894 | Gross: $125.07M
Smart use of its premise that I wish more biopics could emulate. Hanks is a standout performance for the film.
20. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
PG-13 | 133 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy
The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York's secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.

The characters are absurdly like-able, but the plot kinda falls apart after one too many twists.

While navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.

The opening is the strongest part of the film, and I'm a sucker for bittersweet endings too.

There are fun moments, but the film really has a hard time justifying its own existence to me.

Storks have moved on from delivering babies to packages. But when an order for a baby appears, the best delivery stork must scramble to fix the error by delivering the baby.

Pretty energetic, and the hyper comedy brings a few laughs despite most of the rest being lackluster.
26. Jackie (V) (2016)

Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband's historic legacy.

Well put together and well acted, but so, so dull.
27. Batman: Bad Blood (2016 Video)
PG-13 | 72 min | Animation, Action, Adventure
Bruce Wayne is missing. Alfred covers for him while Nightwing and Robin patrol Gotham City in his stead. And a new player, Batwoman, investigates Batman's disappearance.
It's okay overall but no part of it really stands out as noteworthy to me. It's also just kinda mean for the majority of its run, not really making the ending feel earned.
28. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
The daughter of an Imperial scientist joins the Rebel Alliance in a risky move to steal the Death Star plans.
Votes: 471,321 | Gross: $532.18M
One character I like, and nifty action. The script really needed a pass or two, though.
29. Below Her Mouth (2016)
Not Rated | 94 min | Drama, Romance
An unexpected affair quickly escalates into a heart-stopping reality for two women whose passionate connection changes their lives forever.
This is basically just lesbian porn put to a barebones plot. But it's solid lesbian porn at least.
30. Central Intelligence (2016)

After he reconnects with an awkward pal from high school through Facebook, a mild-mannered accountant is lured into the world of international espionage.

The quiet life of a terrier named Max is upended when his owner takes in Duke, a stray whom Max instantly dislikes.

The Gidget/Hawk dynamic made me wish that was what the whole movie was, not some bland Toy Story rip off.

Maybe one joke got me to laugh, and the rest was either boring, offensive, or offensively boring.

PG | 108 min | Animation, Comedy, Family
In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists find that their lives will never be the same.
Votes: 114,063 | Gross: $270.40M
Bad animation, barebones plot and characters. Juggling 6 stories at once is hard, I know, but you could at least try to make this work. Or, you know, not give away everything in the trailers.
34. Suicide Squad (2016)
PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
A secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse.
Votes: 525,795 | Gross: $325.10M
Every single thing about this movie is terrible, save one creative effect. I don't like the characters, the story is a mess, and it's soooo boring on top of that.
