MCU Chronological Watch Order

by Darkpoet1792 | created - 9 months ago | updated - 1 month ago | Public

This is my chronological watch order for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For me, that includes any film made by Marvel Studios starting in 2008 with Iron Man, the one-shots also made by Marvel Studios, the following TV shows; Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (AoS), Agent Carter, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher, Inhumans, Cloak & Dagger, Runaways and the spinoff web series Slingshot and WHIH Newsfront. If you don't consider any of these properties canon, then you may exclude them when watching through.

This list will have spoilers for all properties up to this point in time, so if you'd like to avoid spoilers, just follow the description order without looking at the explanations for a properties placement below the description.

Some of these properties overlap or run concurrently with other properties, so I decided to place those specific properties where there's no narrative interference. Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel's AoS Slingshot both start and end in the present day (for it's time) however because the majority of those events take place in the past, I've decided to place them accordingly. This may lead to spoilers for certain other properties, so you may move where you watch something around if need be. Most of these placements revolve around release dates (specifically for AoS) and while I do add dates (mostly months) for a majority of the properties, this isn't 100% accurate and just my take on it. Because this universe is so large, with many different people and companies creating these stories, mistakes are made and so if there's something I consider a mistake within these properties, I will include it in the explanations. If you do find any errors in my order, feel free to let me know and I will explain or change my list accordingly.

1. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

Director: Joe Johnston | Stars: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell

Votes: 670,465 | Gross: $176.65M

The majority of this film takes place from March 1942 to September 2nd (and 3rd, presumably) 1945. The beginning and end of this film takes place during Fury's Big Week (May 24th - 30th of 2011). If you wish to view the past section of this film as a flashback, feel free to watch it after The Consultant.

2. Agent Carter (2015–2016)

TV-PG | 42 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

In 1946, Peggy Carter is relegated to secretarial duties in the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). When Howard Stark is accused of treason, he secretly recruits Peggy to clear his name with the help of his butler, Edwin Jarvis.

Stars: Hayley Atwell, James D'Arcy, Enver Gjokaj, Chad Michael Murray

Votes: 66,680

Agent Carter Season 1 takes place a year after Steve's "death", placing it in 1946. S1E1 - There's a slight continuity error in this episode. A newspaper says it's June 7th, 1946. Therefore Episode 1 would take place June 7th and 8th. However in episode 5, April 27th is 2 days from now, placing that on the 25th. What I've come to discover is that if you use the 7th on the newspaper from Ep 1, and watch through to episode 5, the night day cycle adds up to be the 25th. So, because the characters stated it is indeed April, we can ignore the June on the newspaper (even if it's slightly annoying). Though with how well the actual dates line up, I'm thinking they did mean for it to be April, but didn't feel like reprinting an entire newspaper for that change. This episode takes place April 7th-8th, 1946.

S1E2 - This episode takes place on April 9th-10th, 1946.

S1E3 - This episode takes place on April 11th-12th, 1946.

S1E4 - This episode takes place on April 20th-22nd, 1946.

S1E5 - This episode takes place on April 25th-28th, 1946.

S1E6 - This episode takes place on April 29th-30th, 1946.

S1E7 - This episode takes place on April 30th - May 1st, 1946.

S1E8 - This episode takes place on May 1st-2nd, 1946.

Agent Carter Season 2 takes place a year after S1, in July of 1946.

S2E1 - This episode takes place July 13th-14th, 1947.

S2E2 - This episode takes place July 15th, 1947.

S2E3 - This episode takes place July 15th-16th, 1947.

S2E4 - This episode takes place July 16th, 1947.

S2E5 - This episode takes place July 16th-17th, 1947.

S2E6 - This episode takes place July 17th-18th, 1947.

S2E7 - This episode takes place July 18th, 1947.

S2E8 - This episode takes place July 19th, 1947.

S2E9 - This episode takes place July 19th, 1947.

S2E10 - The final episode takes place July 19th-20th, 1947.

3. Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter (2013 Video)

Not Rated | 15 min | Short, Action, Adventure

Frustrated at being marginalized at work, Peggy Carter goes on an unauthorized solo field mission.

Director: Louis D'Esposito | Stars: Hayley Atwell, Bradley Whitford, Dominic Cooper, Tim Trobec

Votes: 6,999

This One-Shot contains the first error (imo), as it states this takes place one year after Steve's "death", even though this has to take place after the show. Unfortunately this error is because when developing the show, they didn't expect a S2. So, how I've decided to look at this is simple, it takes place a year after S2 in 1948. Agent Flynn is the new chief after Chief Thompson is murdered. Flynn just ignores everything that came before him about Carter because he's sexist and doesn't believe any of the reports about Carter. I figure placing it a year after S2 gives Peggy and Sousa enough time to investigate what seems like a dead end on Thompson's murder, then having her leave for New York and being put under Agent Flynn, 3 months before this. We also have Howard referring to the organization as S.H.I.E.L.D. and it's still the S.S.R. during S1 & 2. If you disagree with the way I look at this One-Shot, then that's fine. All you have to do is pick which one is canon or non-canon, or only consider S1 canon. Or just not care at all about these tiny things because you're not as obsessed as I am :)

4. Captain Marvel (2019)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck | Stars: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law

Votes: 311,179 | Gross: $426.77M

My theory was wrong XD

Captain Marvel takes place in 1995.

5. Iron Man (2008)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

79 Metascore

After being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges

Votes: 867,129 | Gross: $318.41M

I've placed this film from August to November of 2010. The months I know are correct as the film opens in August. Tony's captured and held captive in a cave for 3 months placing the rest of the film is in November, specifically November 24th as that's when Coulson's meeting is with the day after being the 25th. 6 months after that is his birthday, May 29th of the next year. While this film was released in 2008, that placement causes inconsistencies throughout the films and shows. First, Iron Man 2 happens 6 months later and is apart of Fury's Big Week, which occurs a year before The Avengers. We know The Avengers happens in 2012 (around the 4th of May) making Fury's Big Week in 2011. So this film has to take place in 2010. And I didn't forget Vision's line in Civil War, I'll get to that then.

6. Iron Man 2 (2010)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

57 Metascore

With the world now aware of his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark must contend with both his declining health and a vengeful mad man with ties to his father's legacy.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle

Votes: 659,870 | Gross: $312.43M

I've placed this film in the May 25th (6 months after Iron Man 1 exactly) to June 4th of 2011 time frame as it takes place during Fury's Big Week and on Tony Stark's birthday which is May 29th in the MCU. Tony mentions his birthday was last week so I just went ahead and picked a random date in the week after. The majority of this film takes place before the other films this week.

7. Marvel One-Shot: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer (2011 Video)

Not Rated | 4 min | Short, Action, Sci-Fi

Agent Coulson stops at a convenience store and deals with a coincidental robbery during his visit.

Director: Leythum | Stars: Clark Gregg, Jessica Manuel, Jeff Prewett, Zach Hudson

Votes: 5,767

This One-Shot takes place during Fury's Big Week and follows Agent Coulson from where we left him in Iron Man 2, on May 30th to where we see him in Thor, around June 2nd.

8. Thor (2011)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

57 Metascore

The powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Director: Kenneth Branagh | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston

Votes: 685,562 | Gross: $181.03M

This film takes place during Fury's Big Week, running concurrently with the end of Iron Man 2. I place it from May 30th (the day after Tony's birthday) to June 4th, as that's about how many days and nights pass when watching the film.

9. The Incredible Hulk (2008)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

61 Metascore

Bruce Banner, a scientist on the run from the U.S. Government, must find a cure for the monster he turns into, whenever he loses his temper.

Director: Louis Leterrier | Stars: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt

Votes: 403,728 | Gross: $134.52M

This film takes place during Fury's Big Week, with most of the film running concurrently with the end of Iron Man 2 and Thor. This film has the opening in Brazil & Guatemala on the 6th, 7th and 8th of May. Him arriving in the US is 17 days after that, being the 25th and the rest of the film is from there to June 4th. While some choose to watch this before Thor, I decided not to as it breaks up the flow of following Agent Coulson from Iron Man 2 through Thor.

10. Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant (2011 Video)

Not Rated | 4 min | Short, Sci-Fi

Agents Coulson and Sitwell plan to derail General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from interfering with S.H.I.E.L.D. affairs with a very special person.

Director: Leythum | Stars: Clark Gregg, Maximiliano Hernández, Deborah Knox, Robert Downey Jr.

Votes: 5,144

This One-Shot takes place during Fury's Big Week, running concurrently with the end of The Incredible Hulk on June 4th.

11. The Avengers (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner

Votes: 1,186,240 | Gross: $623.36M

This film takes place a year after Fury's Big Week, around May 4th to May 5th of 2012.

12. Marvel One-Shot: Item 47 (2012 Video)

Not Rated | 12 min | Short, Action, Sci-Fi

SHIELD agent Sitwell is assigned to recover an abandoned Chitauri weapon being used by a young couple robbing a bank

Director: Louis D'Esposito | Stars: Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Bradford, Maximiliano Hernández, Titus Welliver

Votes: 7,181

This One-Shot takes place shortly after The Avengers. I decided to place it a week after, May 12th of 2012.

13. Iron Man 3 (2013)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle

Votes: 694,947 | Gross: $409.01M

This film takes place around Christmas time of 2012, 6 months after The Avengers. I placed it from the 23rd to the 30th as 3 days, 4 nights pass during the movie and the Vice President and his family are opening gifts during the film. This film is in 2012 and not 2013 because the opening is New Years Eve 1999 going into the year 2000, and the present day is 13 years after that. 13 years after would be New Years Eve 2012 going into 2013. Since this film takes place during Christmas, it makes more sense to place it in Christmas of 2012 and not 2013 because Extremis is introduced in this film and is used heavily in the 1st half of AoS S1, which happens before Christmas 2013.

14. Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King (2014 Video)

Not Rated | 14 min | Short, Action, Sci-Fi

A documentary filmmaker interviews the now-famous Trevor Slattery from behind bars.

To explain from above Vision's line in this film about Tony revealing himself as Iron Man 8 years ago, there's a couple ways we take this information.

First is that it's 100% fact and Iron Man happens in 2008, which is mostly fine except that multiple other films have it taking place in 2010, to line up properly (specifically Phase 1) Second is we can ignore this line as this is the only film that actually places Iron Man in 2008 with this line of dialogue. Third is to assume he meant to say 6 years and not 8... because he's secretly Ultron this whole time and Ultron doesn't want us to have a cohesive universe.

As I mentioned in the opening description, there are some errors in this universe. In my opinion, I consider this the 2nd error in the MCU as it directly contradicts where Iron Man 2, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, and multiple TV shows place The Avengers, being in 2012. You can see why The Avengers taking place in 2012 means Iron Man has to take place in 2010 above, in the Iron Man description box. Let me know how you guys view this, and how wrong I really am below XD

This film takes place 2 months after Civil War, during October of 2016, Peter's Homecoming dance.

I consider this film to have the 3rd error in the MCU. To start, the 8 years later titlecard has been confirmed to be wrong. In Infinity War, the events of The Avengers film takes place 6 years before that, placing Avengers in 2012. While this could mean Homecoming takes place in 2017, as it's the year the film released, we also get a 2 months later titlecard from Civil War. Civil War takes place in 2016 as it's been a year since Age of Ultron in that film and Rhodey in Infinity War mentions it's been a couple years since that event. If Civil War happened in 2017, 2 months before Homecoming, then a couple years wouldn't fit Rhodes description.
