1. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

PG-13 | 164 min | Action, Thriller

78 Metascore

Eight years after the Joker's reign of anarchy, Batman, with the help of the enigmatic Catwoman, is forced from his exile to save Gotham City, now on the edge of total annihilation, from the brutal guerrilla terrorist Bane.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman

Votes: 1,373,810 | Gross: $448.14M

The weakest of the 'Dark Knight' trilogy is still a really good movie, it is a little long but successfully bids farewell to the franchise; there's also some fantastic action and an impactful story, despite the lack of 'Batman'.

2. The Avengers (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner

Votes: 1,163,510 | Gross: $623.36M

This feature knows how to have fun and has some breath-taking action, but the characters are what make it so effective as you really care about each and every one of them.

3. 21 Jump Street (2012)

R | 109 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

69 Metascore

A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.

Directors: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller | Stars: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson

Votes: 474,711 | Gross: $138.45M

Much better than I thought it was going to be, this sharp comedy based off the original TV show is hilarious throughout and has some decent action too; a great amount of fun.

4. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

R | 95 min | Comedy, Horror

72 Metascore

Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods.

Director: Drew Goddard | Stars: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz

Votes: 335,793 | Gross: $42.07M

A witty breath of fresh-air which satirises the horror genre whilst still respecting it. I found it extremely funny and the satire was on point, but the horror elements are successful as well; one of my favourite horror films.

5. ParaNorman (2012)

PG | 92 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

72 Metascore

A misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.

Directors: Chris Butler, Sam Fell | Stars: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Tucker Albrizzi

Votes: 86,689 | Gross: $56.00M

Laika continue to make stellar stop-motion films; this is a wonderfully animated, wickedly funny and refreshingly unique which is well-done in all of it's aspects.

6. The Hunt (2012)

R | 115 min | Drama

77 Metascore

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrøm

Votes: 238,426 | Gross: $0.69M

It's a compelling and at times frustrating examination of a man who's life spirals out of control through no fault of his own, a movie which deals with tough subject-matter but handles it well and keeps it's focus on it's blameless protagonist; brilliant stuff.

7. Skyfall (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

81 Metascore

Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench

Votes: 589,228 | Gross: $304.36M

This year's bond feature is much better than 'Quantum' but still doesn't reach the heights of 'Casino Royale', instead being a slightly slower and more somber affair that still entertains throughout.

8. Dredd (2012)

R | 95 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

60 Metascore

In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

Director: Pete Travis | Stars: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rachel Wood

Votes: 233,382 | Gross: $13.41M

Miles better than the Stallone interpretation of the character, this gritty and true-to-the-comics adaptation has plenty of brutal action and sharp dialogue; the characters are relatable and well-rounded, and the unique world is excellently painted.

9. Django Unchained (2012)

R | 165 min | Drama, Western

81 Metascore

With the help of a German bounty hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington

Votes: 1,197,385 | Gross: $162.81M

While undeniably too long for it's own good and structurally messy, you just can't beat a bit of Tarantino. This is a fun ride that's over-the-top violent whenever it can be but always knows exactly what it is.

10. Looper (2012)

R | 113 min | Action, Crime, Drama

84 Metascore

In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination.

Director: Rian Johnson | Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano

Votes: 497,416 | Gross: $66.49M

It loses its way a bit when a psychic child is introduced, but this is big-budget, high-concept science-fiction at its best and is entertaining throughout.
