1. Cool Hand Luke (1967)
GP | 127 min | Crime, Drama
A laid back Southern man is sentenced to two years in a rural prison, but refuses to conform.
An interesting story about rules and regimes, about reframing and non-conformity, about play and freedom. Worth to watch again to find more meaning in it. Personally the religious layer of the story I'm not so much interested in yet the references may be relevant for others.
2. The Game (1997)
R | 129 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller
After a wealthy banker is given an opportunity to participate in a mysterious game, his life is turned upside down when he becomes unable to distinguish between the game and reality.
Votes: 317,921 | Gross: $48.32M
If you like Alternate Reality Games, this is one to watch. Moreover it is a great puzzle. The cover image underlines that. Yet 'The Puzzle' would not have been a great name for the movie, I suppose.
3. Ender's Game (2013)
PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Young Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, an insectoid alien race who had previously tried to invade Earth and had inflicted heavy losses on humankind.
Votes: 212,991 | Gross: $61.74M
A movie about War Games. Read the book when I was in art school and enjoyed reading the complete series. The description of their practice battles and Ender's ever changing tactics still stick with me. Especially when you learn about the true nature of these exercises.
4. Life Is Beautiful (1997)
PG-13 | 116 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
When an open-minded Jewish librarian and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor, and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp.
Votes: 560,790 | Gross: $57.60M
Ode to the power of humor, of storytelling, of make-belief, of play. This is a movie you'll either love or hate and that will say something about yourself. It's worth reflecting on your initial reactions to this movie.
5. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
PG-13 | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Video game adventurer Lara Croft comes to life in a movie where she races against time and villains to recover powerful ancient artifacts.
Votes: 186,979 | Gross: $131.14M
This is the 'real' Lara Croft. It may have a lousy rating but at least try watching the opening scene. It's clearly about challenges and being in the zone. This time though, you do not master Lara. She is in control. And with control, I mean an unreal control. Enjoy the cat and mouse game.
I have a weak spot for Jolie, so I watched both movies in one go and enjoyed it, I have to admit. Never was any good at the video games though.
6. Toy Story (1995)
G | 81 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
A cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's room.
Votes: 809,156 | Gross: $191.80M
Toys and humans. Their special bond. About play time and then one day growing up and putting your toys in a box. What follows is an epic quest for your heart. All three Toy Stories are worth watching.
