Some Good, Better and Best Tamil Movies..:)

by itsmani87 | created - 03 Aug 2013 | updated - 16 Oct 2016 | Public

This list is not in any particular order! Just a collection of good movie names..Suggestions are welcome..And always remember this list will be updated..!:) And pls don't get a wrong assumption abt filter by genre in the right side...It's completely wrong, as wrong catalogue is maintained in this database.. And remember Tamil, or more in general Indian films has few songs, where lyrics of love sometimes transcends boundaries, a bit of parallel way of story telling, with some comic ingredients like sweet toppings(likable) and sometimes, heavy vehicles like SUVs flying apart from few cliches.. But, this list will mostly have some good, different story lines and likable stories..(songs, excuse, can ffwd :) ..subtitles(for recent movies, will be there..for old movies, doubt)

The tale of Mahabharatha written in a Manirathnam style... (Some people think less of contributions of this director...Like director Myskin who directed, 'Anjaathe', who justified his plagiarism of 'Nandalala' in Vijay TV talk show, "Maniratnam too copies..!!" For those ppl, he is one of the director whose movie has been shortlisted in Times Best 100 movies in the 20th century ('Nayagan')..

His wife Mrs.Suhasini told in another talk show, 'Miramax' Hollywood Production house had approached this director to direct a movie.

This happens not by luck, chance. But, purely by his talent!! Thalapathi is one of his Masterpiece creations. With good cinematography by Santhosh Sivan and good music by Illayaraja

Note: Illayaraja's 'Rakkama Kayathattu' (lyrics:vaali) song is chosen as one of 20th century's best music composition in BBC's list

Movie can be translated to 'Money is God'. There is a large family and person in the family(Hero- Muthuraman) loves a girl (Lakshmi), who join as servant maid. He needs money and the way they(Muthuraman, his friend Srikanth and heroine) go for Gold is by through arranging a fake Godman(Thengai Srinivasan, who speaks funky tamil language). Watch it, for the way the person to be cheated (Manorama) and other mentioned actors performances.

I want to add some old movies in this list; laughable riot. I am unsure will it be available with subtitles!:P It's for some future generations, who can see how old customs and behavior were there ; a black and white series movie list

8. Poova Thalaya (1969)

I am not sure of the woman's name, but her performance was great along with other actors..

Why is in the list? It's funny, and for the first time a woman was shown as a villanous character in Tamil cinema..

Superstar..!! The name, which ruled box office, and tamil cine industry was born in this movie...

He deserved it; Rajini...After so many years in Tamil industry and ruling box offices, being humble all the way, he deserved the title..

Unwelcomely, so many titles were coined by many actors themselves to the ages to come...(in tamil industry atleast)

Muthuraman, Ravichandran, Balayya, Nagesh...Why am I leaving female actors..? Not that, I am prejudiced, but most films probably had much to do with male actors...!:(

It's a comic movie...Good one ! Music score by blockbuster duo Viswanathan&Ramamoorthy is evergreen..

Actress Sachu's dance moves with Nagesh is noteworthy...

This is for Vijay, the ACTOR and actress Shalini, directed by Fazil...A romantic tale, whose title roughly translates to 'Respecting Love', which tells story about a Christian Girl, a normal Hindu guy; how they fall in love with each other and the problems, they are facing with their families..

p.s: why did I put 'actor' in caps...this fellow in his later years tortured us the tamil fans continuosly, with same stories and different/excess ingredients of Masala( which in cinematic terms, translates to couple of songs in foreign locations with heroines, beating up of the villains, flying cars, SPEAKING nonsensial PUNCH DIALOGUES (- ex: life is a square, for which his opponent actor Ajith will counteract by saying life is a circle..!!!!! ##$$%(cough, sputter, spit)) and some comedy to complete the masala ingredients...)

Director: Mani Ratnam | Stars: Prashanth, Anand, Heera Rajgopal, Anu Agrawal

Votes: 1,049

music: ar rahman, direction: maniratnam combo, it's like ordering popcorn with pepsi/'s a good entertaining combo..

the movie is different...there are too many flying things in this movie! (cars, bullock carts, scooter, lorry, actors)'s total fun to watch this kind of things ..

but if you ignore the above con, this movie is watchable...a hollywood kind of movie, might have been inspired..

this movie marked the colloboration of Ram Gopal Varma/Maniratnam and one more bigwig in Indian industry for screenplay/production...

and the finance minister role is clearly inspired by of rare kinds in Indian cinema, to portray a real life politician, as part of characterization...

It's overall a Heist Drama..It happens or shown very rarely in Tamil Cinema.. Guess, 'Nanayam' was the only one to come after this, with this theme..

conclusion: not intelligent enough film makers.

17. Abhiyum Naanum (2008)

Director: Radha Mohan | Stars: Prakash Raj, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya, Ganesh Venkatraman

Votes: 1,038

father/child(girl) relationship from her childhood days till she gets married...! An emotional, lovable story...

Director Radha Mohan and actor/producer Prakash Raj are one among many good combos Tamil industry has seen..All their movies, except for recently released, 'Gowravam' had been hits and critically acclaimed.

If I don't tell Actress Trisha's performance, I will become male prejudiced! She has been a heart throb for almost a decade. From Leysa Leysa till Vinnaithandi varuvaya, she has acted in many good movies; unfortunately if Hollywood film industry has actress portrayed as Sex material, Tamil/Telugu/Hindi industry reduce woman to dummy material with skin show and glamour; this part which I am not liking in movies across.

Revathy, is one of the actresses in tamil cine industry who has worked on some bold movies and had kept her integrity throughout.. She joins hands with Oorvasi, and Rohini, in this laugh riot...!! Nasser, embodies the famous mischievous casanova 'Mookan'...

Note: Revathy is like 'Meryl Streep' of Tamil movies, except there are no proper film makers at present to exploit her talent...She is getting weak characterizations as mother of a hero or heroine... Oorvasi is fun throughout in this movie as well as many others to come..

Unnaipol oruvan is a remake of 'A Wednesday' Hindi film...It's gripping story/thriller...Towards climax, the dialogue or reasoning of the protogonist for his actions weren't as crisp/clear as in Hindi cinema, where reasoning was even more proper...!

Anyhow my loving lady Shruti Hasan enters as a Music composer for this film..!! Wish she could do something of this kind than portraying dummy characters in Cinema, which might fetch her money, but not awards and lovable fans like me..!!:P (though public drooling is injurious to health, find her too gorgeous to avoid mentioning it)

Director Bala is an assistant director of Balu Mahendra had directed some different stories portraying the backward society; the sufferings and their mentality..

He is held in good regards by the Tamil Cine film industry and still openly admitted, liking to work as an assistant to Director Mani Ratnam..Not sure, whether it's 'sarcasm' or open admiration of the director... But, I will tell for this director to go onto the international scene with a gripping story, has to work with Director Mani Ratnam...He is the director for the future..His latest film, 'Paradesi' is way ahead of his earlier films...

Director Balachandar movies portray women as independent working one shouldering responsibilities unlike other movies at that time..This is one such movie, where protogonist enacted by Sujatha takes care of all the things in family...A trend setter for a few more movies of this genre!

It's not 1973 film, which I am referring to 2006 film, Sathyaraj starrer one..Anyhow both might be good..It's a biography about a person who is an athiest and who brought about a change in Tamil Nadu, with no caste names behind the names, unlike other parts of India, where still Dalits are treated poorly and not allowed to enter temples.
