2019 Box Office Predictions

by Lachlan_Saunders | created - 12 Jun 2016 | updated - 22 hours ago | Public

Should be an absolutely enormous year at the box office. Disney looks to take home at least six of the top ten films of the year, possibly including the entire top seven. Both the MCU and Star Wars will be reaching a finale so-to-speak, live-action Disney remakes will be hitting an all-time high in popularity and the usual sequel/spin-off fare will prove to pull in the big dollars. It looks as though Disney is putting all their chips into 2019; it's THE box office year they've been building to for over a decade now. They're looking to pull in up to $5b from their three Marvel films alone. Should be interesting to see how their box office reign continues into 2020; where they absolutely won't be able to continue their upward streak (without a 'Star Wars' or 'Avengers' or Pixar sequel).

This film has the most of a "must-see" factor that any film in the franchise has since 'Force Awakens'. Everyone who saw 'Last Jedi' will be back for this film despite the backlash that film received. Every fan will want to see how the saga will "end", the final appearance of Carrie Fisher and especially the return of Billy Dee Williams. Now following the release of the first teaser trailer we can add The Emperor to that list as well. I think that the fandom clamoring for the title reveal/trailer just proves that fans of 'Star Wars' will always be interested in 'Star Wars', especially the so-called final film in the saga. The actual threat to this film's grosses will be 'Frozen 2' releasing a month prior and 'Jumanji' a week before. I think this film will be a hit in the same manner as 'TFA' with all of the same noise and discussion as 'TLJ'. 'Cats' could potentially chip into this films January grosses if it manages to blow up as opposed to bombing. If 'Cats' is successful in a similar vein to 'Greatest Showman', then 'Episode IX' will likely have similar legs to 'TLJ': if it bombs, then this movie could leg it out like 'Rogue One'. Either way, it'll make serious bank domestically and potentially crack the top 5 of all time. It's important to note that the original and prequel trilogies followed the same box office pattern of the first film being huge, the second film falling about 30% and the final film increasing by about 20-25%. This movie opens on the 20th of December (the last day of school in the U.S.), and it'll make a ridiculous amount of money all throughout its Christmastime opening week, and its New Years 2nd weekend. I wouldn't be totally surprised if it manages to match the 'TFA' 10 day record to $500m domestic, but I think an opening week around $330-$370m is reasonable. International grosses should be much more in line with 'TLJ' over 'TFA', but I would expect a decent increase over the previous film even when it inevitably fails in China again. 'Star Wars' is still one of the most widespread, popular franchises in America. Say what you will about the MCU, 'Star Wars' has more of a multi-generational appeal. Critics will most likely love this film in the same manner as the previous two episodes, and audiences will love it despite some of the inevitable shouting of the "hardcore fanbase". I think most 'Star Wars' fans will be happy with the conclusion. J.J. has proved that he knows how to deliver the goods. It's being pitched as a culmination of all previous episodes, which is sure to please fans of each individual trilogy and fans of all ages. Looks like a fun, well-made adventure movie and I think its general reception will be closer to something like 'Deathly Hallows' and 'Force Awakens' over 'The Last Jedi'. If it's a huge crowd-pleaser (which I expect it to be by design), it could stay in the top 10 for a very long time and enjoy repeat viewings like 'TFA' did, especially considering this is being sold as the end of the series. For reference, 'TFA' had an opening weekend multiplier of 3.78x, 'Rogue One' of 3.44x and 'TLJ' 2.82x. I'm thinking very similar Thursday preview grosses to 'TLJ', a higher pure Friday gross and a slightly higher Saturday and Sunday gross to follow. OW multiplier should sit somewhere in between 'TLJ' and 'Rogue One'. The above worst-case scenario is based on the notion of this being the worst-received Star Wars film yet, similarly the best-case scenario prediction is based off of the exact opposite notion that this is the best-received Star Wars film since the original trilogy across the board. I don't see either of these situations coming to pass, thus my thoughts are that it falls somewhere directly between the two.

4. Frozen II (2019)

PG | Animation, Adventure, Comedy | Completed

Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leave Arendelle to travel to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land. They set out to find the origin of Elsa's powers in order to save their kingdom.

Directors: Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee | Stars: Jason Ritter, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, Evan Rachel Wood

Prediction: Domestic: $495,000,000 Worldwide: $1,320,000,000 Opening (Domestic): $137,000,000

Reception: IMDb: 7.2 Rotten Tomatoes: 86% Metacritic: 68/100

This is gonna be huge. The first film still holds the record for the highest-grossing animated film worldwide (unless you count 'The Lion King [2019]'), so I think this one's a shoo-in to replace it. International grosses could very well be much in the same, and this should have a massive opening domestically. It won't dethrone the 'Incredibles 2' opening record due to the mere six year wait compared to the fourteen year wait for that film. This film will experience very little competition for its opening and it should do very, VERY well throughout the holiday season alongside 'Star Wars' and 'Jumanji'. Its opening week grosses should be very high, and the opening weekend might turn out lower than expected if audiences decide to wait for Thanksgiving. Either way it's looking at a $160m-$210m 7-day opening. Reviews should be very favorable similar to the last few Disney animated flicks and audiences will definitely love the film.

I'm thinking numbers like 'Cinderella' or fellow Memorial Day openers such as 'Days of Future Past' and 'Solo' are far more likely than that of 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Jungle Book', given the busy summer movie season we have slated. I don't know how people will feel about this particular live-action remake, but if they're not mad about 'Lion King' then they probably won't be too mad about this one either. Overseas it will probably do very well, similar to previous live action Disney remakes. Critics will most likely respond to this one with similar enthusiasm to 'Beauty and the Beast'. The first teaser looked impossibly terrible, but the follow-up trailer had a lot of people convinced that this might not be all that bad, and that's enough for Disney to make a killing.

In the year of so-called under-performing sequels, I'm pretty sure this will make a lot less money than 'Welcome to the Jungle', at least domestically. It releases three weeks after 'Frozen 2' and one week before 'Episode IX'. I think the mixture of these circumstances will result in a smaller opening for this film than some might expect; as audiences hold on to their wallets for the following week. I imagine tracking for the film will sit around $60m-$80m, but I'm gonna argue that it opens smaller and favors a big multiplier; similar to its predecessor. This film's opening will be largely affected by the crazy amount of promotional material for 'Star Wars'. Following its opening, we'll see a sharp second-weekend drop-off (in the range of 70%), then I imagine it will jump up and make consistently larger amounts of money throughout the entire holiday season resulting in an impressive multiplier. 'Star Wars' will clearly be a huge hit come December and alongside 'Frozen II' still legging it out until the first few months of 2020, I still think there's room for this to do really well, but nowhere close to its predecessor (at least domestically). The placement of this one coming out before 'Star Wars' was an interesting move seeing as how the last film released the following week to 'TLJ', resulting in its impressive holiday run. I'm thinking a domestic drop-off similar to what we saw between 'Furious 7' and 'Fate of the Furious'. International numbers should be much in the same as 'WttJ'.

Don't really see any reason why this wouldn't make similar numbers to the first chapter. Worst case scenario, the film loses interest with the loss of its young cast members and its fad 80s-setting, receives poor reviews and opens with a lower $80m-$95m and legs it to $190m-$240m; which would still be hugely successful. I think this will fall into the intended success of sequels and deliver close opening numbers due to everyone who saw the first film returning. Yes, I think it's true to a degree that some of the elements that made the first film a success not being present here could be an issue, but I think the new setting and cast just provides more curiosity in film-goers; and Pennywise is now a widespread horror icon among multiple generations. The big hits of the late summer such as 'Lion King', 'Spider-Man' and 'Hobbs and Shaw' should be down to making smaller numbers at the time of this film's release. All in all I'd say this fixes it for an opening somewhere in the range of $115m-$150m. It also has basically the entire month of September to make as much money as it wants before 'Joker' rolls around on October 4th. International grosses will probably stay within the $300-$400m range. Reviews will most likely be similar to the first film, due to the same creative team at the helm; some critics however may find the film lacking, similar to the second chapter of the original TV movie and by nature of how difficult it should be to adapt the second half of the novel.

Films like 'Aladdin' and 'Toy Story 4' will detract from this quite heavily to prevent it from matching the numbers the predecessor made. An opening in the realm of Illumination's latest, 'The Grinch' would be respectable enough. Paired with some decent summer movie season legs to achieve the usual $200m+ Illumination gross. 'Toy Story 4' does release only two weeks after and 'Spider-Man' and 'Lion King' will also play well with younger audiences the following month. So don't expect a super impressive multiplier here (just a good one for an animated film), but it should be enough to label this a big success. International grosses should be the same deal. Critics probably won't dig this one as much as the first going by the track record of Illumination sequels.

Should be just as popular and even bigger at the box office than 'Get Out'. Looks fantastic, and we've seen other horror films like 'A Quiet Place' open before the summer and experience both an impressive opening and a large multiplier. Outstanding reviews seem pretty locked in if the film is as great as the trailer makes it look. Opens in 'Captain Marvel's third weekend, so that might hold it back ever-so-slightly, but horror openings seem to be trending upwards with 'The Nun', 'It' and 'Halloween'.
