1. Heartbeats (2010)
Not Rated | 101 min | Drama, Romance
The story of three close friends who are involved in a love-triangle.
Votes: 24,600 | Gross: $0.06M
"The story of three close friends who are involved in a love-triangle."
Point: relationships can be construed with intentions being so opaque and left lost in translation. Two friends - one a gay man and the other a straight woman - learns the hard way when they caught the eye of a flirtatious man. Is he gay? Is he straight? Is he polyandrous? It's not clear, and yet they venture in hopes that one will come out victorious.
2. Weekend (II) (2011)
Not Rated | 97 min | Drama, Romance
After a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what's expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special.
Votes: 25,590 | Gross: $0.46M
"After a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what's expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special."
Point: Love can't be planned and may not be forever. Grab onto it and live in the moment without loosing focus of the priorities you hold dear. Tom Cullen plays the character whom is anchored by his brother, family and an existential disposition for more, while Chris New is brash and confident, hoping to achieve academic and professional aspirations abroad. The two characters meet and the chemistry is evident.
3. The Fall (I) (2013–2016)
TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A seemingly cold but very passionate policewoman goes head to head with a seemingly passionate father who is in fact a cold serialist in this procedural out of Belfast. The only thing they share is their common complexity.
"A psychological thriller that examines the lives of two hunters. One is a serial killer who stalks his victims in and around Belfast and the other is a talented Detective Superintendent from the MET who is brought in to catch him."
Point: Gillian Anderson (X-Files) is refreshing and charming while Jamie Dornan (Shades of Grey) shows depth and internal motivations for his character. A great character driven show, showing the disconnect one has when they are 100% focus on achieving their goal. The former is after professional success while retaining her credibility in a male dominant misogynist environment. The latter is after internal peace through murderous violence.
4. Melancholia (2011)
R | 135 min | Drama, Sci-Fi
Two sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with Earth.
Votes: 154,213 | Gross: $3.03M
"Two sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with Earth."
Point: How to conquer the overwhelming doom that one has in the existential crisis that death is inevitable. Kirsten Dunst is awe inspiring in this film. Lars von Trier is a genius, plodding his characters towards a sadness, each handling it differently. Beauty, Love and Unity are so important - both for this film, but also in life itself.
5. Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
R | 123 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy
A depressed musician reunites with his lover. Though their romance, which has already endured several centuries, is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister.
Votes: 81,555 | Gross: $1.88M
"A depressed musician reunites with his lover, though their romance - which has already endured several centuries - is disrupted by the arrival of uncontrollable younger sister."
Point: As vampires, there is no looming end. They are eternal and must learn the point of existence. The continual inspiration to put one foot forward when all else fails. It's not just a simple vampire story, nor a love affair etched in the stars dipped deep in the blood in which gives them life. Tilda Swinton & Tom Hiddleston, floating through time, watching and hiding in the shadows.
6. You and the Night (2013)
Unrated | 98 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
Around midnight, a young couple and their transvestite maid prepare for an orgy. Their guests will be The Slut, The Star, The Stud and The Teen.
"Around midnight, a young couple and their transvestite maid prepare for an orgy. Their guests will be The Slut, The Star, The Stud and The Teen."
Point: An absurdist film where an orgy brings together an array of people. Each tells their story, binding them together for that night in solidarity. Through friendship and common interest, they are able to escape their troubles and live in the moment of sensual taboo.
7. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
R | 99 min | Adventure, Comedy, Crime
The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.
Votes: 637,816 | Gross: $59.10M
"The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend."
Point: An "Inception" type story telling, where several stories are told, one within each other...like Russian dolls. Loose yourself in the story, the setting and the music. The costumes are amazing and the cinematographer is top notch. It is forgettable; however well worth seeing. I think this a movie you MUST watch multiple times over.
Notable quote: "There are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity... He was one of them. "
8. Lost in Translation (2003)
R | 102 min | Drama
A faded movie star and a neglected young woman form an unlikely bond after crossing paths in Tokyo.
Votes: 376,184 | Gross: $44.59M
"A faded movie star and a neglected young woman form an unlikely bond after crossing paths in Tokyo."
Point: Foreigners in a foreign place, grasping onto each other, bonding over their strangeness. It's a romance through culture shock and a refusal to assimilate. Beautiful.
Take-away: Great travel film. showed three amazing temples found in Japan. Jugan-ji Temple, Nanzenji Temple and Heian Shrine.
9. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
R | 136 min | Crime, Drama, Sci-Fi
In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned.
"In future Britain, charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge is jailed and volunteers for an experimental aversion therapy developed by the government in an effort to solve society's crime problem - but not all goes according to plan."
Point: The rebellion of youths against the organized society. Buck up or put up? It's what we all have to decide and for Alex DeLarge (played by Malcolm McDowell), he learns the hard way that the system always wins.
10. Trainspotting (1996)
R | 93 min | Drama
Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.
Votes: 592,296 | Gross: $16.50M
"Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends."
Point: Kicking a habit like hereon is a trip like no other, but Mark Renton is dead set on leaving his Edinburgh low-life existence.
Last Lines: "The truth is that I'm a bad person. But, that's gonna change - I'm going to change. This is the last of that sort of thing. Now I'm cleaning up and I'm moving on, going straight and choosing life. I'm looking forward to it already. I'm gonna be just like you. The job, the family, the *beep* big television. The washing machine, the car, the compact disc and electric tin opener, good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, mortgage, starter home, leisure wear, luggage, three piece suite, DIY, game shows, junk food, children, walks in the park, nine to five, good at golf, washing the car, choice of sweaters, family Christmas, indexed pension, tax exemption, clearing gutters, getting by, looking ahead, the day you die."
