1. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

75 Metascore

Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate - an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF.

Director: Christopher McQuarrie | Stars: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg

Votes: 310,563 | Gross: $195.04M

This is far and away the best of the series in my opinion, holding up to multiple watches and entertaining me every time. It's actually one of my favourite action films, with a unique story and well done action that escalates expertly before pulling back for a more personal finale.

2. Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

PG-13 | 147 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

86 Metascore

Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.

Director: Christopher McQuarrie | Stars: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg

Votes: 230,352 | Gross: $220.16M

Every prior entry in the series has raised the bar in terms of action; this might've just launched it into the stratosphere.

3. Mission: Impossible (1996)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

59 Metascore

An American agent, under false suspicion of disloyalty, must discover and expose the real spy without the help of his organization.

Director: Brian De Palma | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, Henry Czerny

Votes: 358,235 | Gross: $180.98M

More of a thinking man's thriller than an action flick, this movie - based off the television show - is entertaining and makes you think. It's also very well directed and written, balancing the set-pieces with the espionage and intrigue perfectly.

4. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

73 Metascore

The IMF is shut down when it's implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization's name.

Director: Brad Bird | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton

Votes: 427,142 | Gross: $209.40M

This bombastic entry is just pure fun, leaning further towards the action side of things, a few plays on expectation here and there make it stand out from the crowd. The action set-pieces are all entertaining, even though the overall plot isn't too compelling.

5. Mission: Impossible III (2006)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

66 Metascore

IMF Agent Ethan Hunt comes into conflict with a dangerous and sadistic arms dealer who threatens his life and his fiancee in response.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Tom Cruise, Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Votes: 305,562 | Gross: $134.03M

The series got back on track when J.J. Abrams took over, sending it in the direction that would ultimately make the franchise what it is today, but the movie isn't without it's flaws; the action is decent and the plot entertaining, though it can drag in places.

6. Mission: Impossible II (2000)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

59 Metascore

I.M.F. Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is sent to Sydney, Australia to find and destroy a genetically modified disease called "Chimera".

Director: John Woo | Stars: Tom Cruise, Dougray Scott, Thandie Newton, Ving Rhames

Votes: 290,236 | Gross: $215.41M

It is certainly a bad film, I can't deny that there's some counter-intuitive enjoyment to be had, especially in the no-holds-barred third act. To be clear, I don't particularly like this film. Yet, I don't hate it, either.
