Winter Is Here: Inside the Return of ‘Informer’ Rapper Snow

Winter Is Here: Inside the Return of ‘Informer’ Rapper Snow
Speaking from his home in Toronto, Snow is still baffled that his reggae-hip-hop merger “Informer” topped charts and moved millions of copies over 25 years ago. “That’s a jail song,” he says, still sounding surprised. “It’s not, ‘Baby, I love you.’ I wrote that song in jail about informers. But people didn’t know what I was singing.”

When no one was looking, “Informer” — with its pumping beat, spit-fire patois and “licky boom-boom down” hook — has refused to go away. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler danced to it in the 2015 comedy Sisters,

You Might Not Know Paula Pell’s Name, But You’ve Loved Her Comedy for Decades

You Might Not Know Paula Pell’s Name, But You’ve Loved Her Comedy for Decades
Amy Poehler has the best metaphor when it comes to talking about the multi-faceted, multi-talented Paula Pell. “Paula’s like the basketball player that plays on the hometown courts and everyone’s like, ‘She’s the best I ever played with,'” Poehler recently told IndieWire. The former “Saturday Night Live” writer — she started on the NBC sketch comedy mainstay in 1993 and stayed on for nearly twenty years — has recently turned her attention back to on-screen performing, including recent roles on series like “Documentary Now!” and “Love.” The most recent: a scene-stealing turn as the ribald Val in Poehler’s own “Wine Country,” which is populated by scores of the pair’s “SNL” pals.

Pell has never exactly shied away from flexing her acting muscles, but the majority of her non-“SNL” credits are of the screenwriting variety. And an enviable variety they are, including script doctoring comedy hits like

They started on the project ten years ago with filmmaker David Lachapelle attached to it and Justin Timberlake signed as the musician as young man. Lachapelle helped to fashion a script but dropped out and then Lee Hall, who did the stage musical version of Billy Elliot, was brought on board to provide the lyrics and book.

How Ugly Will It Get for Stx Entertainment?

  • Variety
When it launched in 2014, Stx Entertainment was supposed to be a smarter and nimbler entertainment company, one that could open compelling movies and launch quality television shows while keeping a lid on costs.

Five years later, the upstart studio has little to show for its efforts, and following the box office failure of “UglyDolls,” an animated movie that the company hoped would launch a franchise, its financial and creative future looks perilous. As if to rub salt in the wounds, Stx’s release of “Poms,” a low-budget movie about a cheerleader troupe of senior citizens, has also met with lackluster box office results.

Under the leadership of CEO Robert Simonds and motion picture chair Adam Fogelson, Stx has repeated the same refrain for years — that the company mitigates its financial risk by spending less on marketing and by selling off foreign rights to the films it makes. But the “UglyDolls” returns are not pretty.

Elton John’s Husband-Producer Says ‘Rocketman’ Captures ‘Madness’ of Singer’s Early Life

  • Variety
When Paramount was getting ready to release the first images from “Rocketman,” Elton John was shown one photo of Taron Egerton in character sitting on a plane.

“It’s a picture of Taron sitting on the Starship, the private jet Elton had in the ‘70s, a big Boeing 707,” says David Furnish, “Rocketman” producer and John’s husband of almost five years (they’ve been together for 26 years). “He’s on the sofa with the glasses and the hot pants. I sent it to Elton and Elton said, ‘I don’t remember taking that. When did I take that picture?’” He thought it was him. Elton was like, ‘Oh my God. Oh my God. It’s uncanny.”

Three months after Rami Malek won the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Egerton is set to appear as Sir Elton.

The Dexter Fletcher-directed “Rocketman,” also starring Richard Madden,

New Fox Looks Like Work in Progress at Upfront (Analysis)

  • Variety
Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier has taken to saying that the relaunch of the broadcast network following the historic Disney-21st Century Fox transaction has turned Fox into a “startup company.” During Monday’s upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre, the startup seams were showing at times as the new-model Fox unveiled a large slate of new shows for the 2019-20 season that amount to a number of swings in different directions.

As promised, Fox is putting great emphasis on live sports and events on its air now that it is untethered from serving the needs of a sibling studio operation as it previously did with 20th Century Fox, now part of Disney. The network’s late-week schedule is stocked with NFL football on Thursday and Sunday, college gridiron on Saturday and Friday’s “sports entertainment” of WWE’s “SmackDown Live.”

But even with the focus on football, much

See Blake Lively, Rihanna and More Stars' Looks at the 2009 Met Gala
Since the Met Gala started in 1948, it seems like it's only gotten better and better as the years go by. There are dozens of themes that come to mind when thinking about the almost-aristocratic event, but very few compare to the history-making galas that took place in the 2000s. One of the themes that comes to mind when thinking about the ultra-exclusive event is the "Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion" ball in 2009. That year, Kate Moss beautifully served as the event's co-chair along with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, designer Marc Jacobs and Justin Timberlake. To say it was a star-studded night is quite the understatement. Candid moments between the hosts and actors...
