‘Prism’: Netflix Eyes ‘Rashomon’-Inspired Drama Piloted At NBC

  • Deadline
Exclusive: Netflix is in explanatory conversations with Universal Television about picking up former NBC drama pilot Prism to series, I have learned. I hear there has been considerable interest but sources stress that talks are in very preliminary stages and may not lead to a deal.

Prism, from Daniel and Ben Barnz’s We’re Not Brothers Productions, Carol Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz, was an early standout at NBC, landing one of the first two pilot orders at the broadcast network alongside Bluff City Law, which went to series.

Prism did not make the cut at NBC but Universal TV brass had been very high on the project and took it out immediately after the network passed on the pilot. The feeling was that Prism‘s content is more premium, so it was shopped to Svod services, with Netflix engaging in talks, I hear.

If a deal for Prism is reached,

Sara Rue Cast in NBC Pilot ‘Prism’
Sara Rue has been cast in a series regular role in the NBC drama pilot “Prism,” Variety has learned.

Prism” is an exploration of a murder trial in which every episode is told through the perspective of a different key person involved. Each new version of the facts ratchets up the mystery and the suspense, calling into question everything we have seen so far and asking if the right person is on trial. Driven by an ensemble of complicated characters, the show lets the audience ask if truth matters less than who can tell the most compelling story.

Rue will play Alexis Boden, who is described as ambitious and views the trial as her “Serial” opportunity. Rue joins previously announced cast members Malin Akerman, Mykelti Williamson, Ramon Rodriguez, Chloe Wepper, David Alpay, and Brooke Smith.

Rue currently recurs on the ABC shows “The Rookie” and “American Housewife.” She also previously

‘Proven Innocent’ Review: Fox’s Legal Series Should Be Held in Contempt of Self-Respecting Courtroom Dramas

‘Proven Innocent’ Review: Fox’s Legal Series Should Be Held in Contempt of Self-Respecting Courtroom Dramas
“Proven Innocent” wants to help the hopeless but can’t save itself from its ill-equipped noble intentions. Created by David Elliott — known for testosterone-laden fare like “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” — Fox’s new legal drama plays like a dude-bro who has suddenly found wokeness, now that he’s become a father of daughters.

In the series, Rachelle Lefevre stars as Maddie Scott, an attorney whose clunkily monikered Injustice Defense Group exonerates the wrongly convicted. Maddie has a fire in her after she and her brother Levi (Riley Smith) were sent to prison as teenagers for a murder they didn’t commit. Not only will Maddie help others like herself, but she’s also determined to take down Gore Bellows (Kelsey Grammer), the prosecutor in the fateful trial against her years ago. He’s still at it, and the two butt heads as Maddie turns up evidence to undo

Review: ‘Birdland’ Favors Mood Over Action by Utilizing Film Noir Tropes

Some filmmakers keep their endings ambiguous so the art lingers with the viewer in order to interpret the piece rather than merely consume it. Writer/director Peter Lynch looks to go one step further with his noir Birdland (co-written by Lee Gowan) by rendering the whole a mystery wherein beginnings and ends are both fluid as far as linear coherency is concerned and meticulously structured to amplify the emotional machinations of his lead Sheila Hood (Kathleen Munroe). Lynch intentionally disorients so that mood overshadows action. He focuses on Sheila’s place within a story branching off in multiple directions independent of her despite her obvious visible presence within each as lurker, voyeur, lover, or friend. Is she therefore a victim of external circumstances or the one deliberately pulling every string?

Even before the title flashes across the screen we’re drowning in images strung together as though tonal poem, gleaning

Movie Review – They’re Watching (2016)

They’re Watching, 2016.

Directed by Jay Lander and Micah Wright.

Starring David Alpay, Cristian Balint, Brigid Brannagh, Dimitri Diatchenko, Mia Faith, Carrie Genzel and Kris Lemche.

Synopsis:

An American TV crew are sent to a small Moldovan village to record a reality home improvement show, but they soon come into conflict with the locals, and their folkloric beliefs of witchcraft.

This found footage horror-comedy begins with a fictionalised reality TV home redevelopment/relocation programme. Californian artist and pottery enthusiast Becky Westlake (Brigid Brannagh) and her spouse Goran Potsnik (Cristian Balint), a shallow soccer player, are looking for a fixer-upper property on the outskirts of a Moldovan village. Local smooth talking salesman Vladimir Filat (Dimitri Diatchenko) takes them around this “potential” country home; an abandoned, half-burned, derelict building. Filat’s unabashed optimism, and possible naiveté, goes to work to smooth out any issues with the house. So whenever Goran points out the obvious,

They’re Watching, So Maybe You Don’t Need To?

Hello again found footage, my old friend. I kid of course. We were never friends. They’re Watching is the latest attempt at delivering found footage (Ff hereafter) thrills, and while it makes some progress it unsurprisingly stalls where so many Ff films have failed before. Home Hunters Global is a globe-hopping reality show about people finding new homes in international locales — think House Hunters International on a budget — and their latest episode introduces viewers to Becky (Brigid Brannagh), an American artist hoping to settle in the Eastern European nation of Moldova. She’s found her new home in the small town of Pavlovka where the locals are twitchy and the Starbucks are non-existent, but when the show’s crew returns a few months later to follow-up on her progress they find more than renovations waiting for them. The crew — cameraman Greg (David Alpay), sound guy Alex (Kris Lemche), new hire Sarah (Mia Faith), and producer Kate

Watch Exclusive Clip For Micah Wright And Jay Lender’s Tense Horror Flick They’re Watching

Careful, They’re Watching, but in an effort to ease the tension, We Got This Covered has an exclusive clip for Micah Wright and Jay Lender’s horror flick to share with you today, and it’s simply dripping with tension.

Billed as a horror-comedy at its dark and brooding core, They’re Watching sends a group of friends to Moldova in search of a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. What they find, however, is anything but normal, irking a volatile religious cult birthed in the shadows of the Eastern European village.

Of those making the ill-advised – and likely one-way – trip to Moldova are Brigid Brannagh, Kris Lemche and David Alpay, and fans can look forward to the release of Wright and Lender’s genre mash-up tomorrow, March 25.

Look for Micah Wright and Jay Lender’s feature when They’re Watching creeps out of the shadows and into theaters today,

They’re Watching Review

*Read In Russian-y Accent* “Only found-footage horror comedy in Moldova iz Best found-footage horror comedy in Moldova” – right? Sorry Dorothina, you’re not in Pavloka anymore. There’s a big cinematic world out there filled with found-footage hopefuls and, unfortunately, They’re Watching is pretty middling by comparison.

Filmmakers Jay Lender and Micah Wright do their best to conjure a witchy Eastern European tale when a reality show crew returns to detail a drastic home makeover. Home Hunters Global unites prospective buyers with fixer-upper dumps, and after an initial sale, host Kate Banks (Carrie Genzel) returns to update viewers on the progress.

In Kate’s latest season, Becky (Brigid Brannagh) and her soccer-playing husband Goran (Cristian Balint) bought the “worst house in Moldova,” and it’s time to witness the transformation. Kate returns to Pavloka with her camera duo, Alex (Kris Lemche) and Greg (David Alpay), along with Sarah (Mia Faith

"They're Watching" Movie Review

.Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. and .My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. are not the only ones vying for your attention this weekend. Let me direct you to a small movie with some pretty big scares, it.s called .They.re Watching,. a film that is so funny, it.s scary.

Adapting the found footage genre, .They.re Watching. tells the tale of a group of American TV crew making a .House Hunters. style reality show in the quaint and mysterious village of Moldova in Eastern Europe.

The first half of the film, when we meet the characters, is the highlight for me. .They.re Watching. has a strong cast and each are likable enough to follow their crazy adventure. There.s the sound guy named Alex (Kris Lemche), Greg the photojournalist (David Alpay), Mia Faith is Sara the production assistant, and my favorite, Carrie Genzel who is the stern Type A producer Kate.
