Reiko was born in Chicago, IL.. She and her younger brother were raised by their mother who worked in a methadone clinic and later ran a jail. When Reiko was 13 yrs. old, they met the man who would become her stepfather and would introduce her to acting and theater. The family soon moved to Springfield, IL briefly then on to Seattle, WA. where she spent most of her teen years. While attending the University of Washington, at age 19 she was scouted and cast in an ABC soap opera and flown to NYC. She soon fell in love with the city and decided to stay and pursue an acting career. While working in regional and off-Broadway theater, she supported herself by working many and various day jobs. By her mid twenties, she was able to live on her acting income but her breakthrough role came with the role of Michelle Dessler on the hit show 24. She has also had ongoing roles on ER, Lost, Damages, Hawaii 5-0 and has worked on many other television shows, films and plays. Her British husband Rob Clare is a well-respected Shakespeare teacher and director who received his doctorate from Oxford University and has taught at leading universities in the US and around the world. They have recently moved from NYC to the Los Angeles area, with their adopted son Andre who was born in Omaha, Nebraska in September 2014.

Moved to Seattle, Washington, when she was 15.
Attended the University of Washington where she studied neural science.
Her ancestry is 1/4 Japanese, 1/4 Welsh, and 1/2 Dutch.
Her first name is pronounced "Ray-co," and means "child of thankfulness" in Japanese.
She and her 24 (2001) co-star and on-screen husband Carlos Bernard, were both born in the same Chicago hospital, nearly 10 years apart.
Lived in Springfield, Illinois from 1987-1988 where she participated in her first play, "West Side Story.".
Is extremely good at pool, having learned how to play in high school.
Of all the characters Reiko has played so far, her favorite has been Michelle Dessler who she describes as "a strong woman with a big heart" and "she's based on my mom".
Was one of the three finalists for the role of Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999). The role eventually went to Mariska Hargitay.
Her Grandparents fled occupied Holland during WWII and escaped to South Africa where her Mother was born. Her mother was partly raised in Holland and Great Britain but came to the U.S. as a child and grew up in Chicago, IL.
Her father is a psychologist.
Reiko grew up with her younger half brother who is mixed African American and Dutch (same mother). She has several half brothers and sisters on her paternal side. She is very fond of the two siblings on that side whom she knows.
Studied acting at Michael Howard Studios in New York City.
Recently moved to the Los Angeles area.
