FremantleMedia International COO Bob McCourt told Deadline that despite the mixed reviews of the Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron-fronted 2017 feature film, the big-screen attempt rejuvenated the brand and encouraged the company to update the original 35Mm prints of the series. ‘Baywatch’ Origin Story: How One Lifeguard Turned His Dream Into A Hassle That Paid Hoff

‘Baywatch’ Origin Story: How One Lifeguard Turned His Dream Into A Hassle That Paid Hoff
Gregory Bonann was a lifeguard at Will Rogers State Beach in 1977 when he helped two children who were caught in a riptide. That rescue would ultimately change his life – and the face of television, setting the stage for the eventual “Baywatch” juggernaut.

Now, with the new feature adaptation of “Baywatch” in theaters this weekend, it’s time to revisit the unusual story of how the lifeguard show made it on the air – ultimately producing 242 episodes before ending its run in 2001.

It all started because it turns out Bonnan had saved the children of Stu Erwin, an executive at Mtm – the independent production company behind series like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Bob Newhart Show,” and run by legendary exec Grant Tinker.

While visiting Mtm’s offices in Studio City, Bonann pitched Erwin on a drama about lifeguards. The company passed, but Bonann took the opportunity to learn all about the TV biz.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, original “Baywatch” producers Michael Berk and Douglas Schwartz spilled a particularly juicy set secret: A young Leonardo DiCaprio was almost cast as David Hasselhoff’s son.

“We actually had DiCaprio ready to be cast,” Berk told THR, “But David thought he was too old to play his son.”

According to Schwartz, Hasselhoff thought DiCaprio’s casting would make him look older. “He had a lot of concerns of that type,” Schwartz admitted. Jeremy Jackson, six years Leo’s junior, was cast instead.

Baywatch Almost Derailed Leonardo DiCaprio's Movie Career

Baywatch Almost Derailed Leonardo DiCaprio's Movie Career
Next year, the iconic TV series Baywatch makes the transition to the big screen with a new reboot starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. The original series is among the most successful of all time, running for 11 seasons between 1989 and 2001, turning stars Pamela Anderson and the rest of the cast into household names. A new retrospective on the original series reveals quite an interesting revelation, that Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio was almost cast on the show when he was just a teenager.

Before he went on to make Oscar winning blockbusters, Leonardo DiCaprio's career began on the small screen, with roles on the 1990 TV series Parenthood and a recurring arc on Growing Pains. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that, at just 15 years of age, the actor auditioned for the role of Mitch Buchannon's (David Hasselhoff) son, Hobie Buchannon, but David Hasselhoff himself "nixed" the casting.
