In 1991, at the tender age of eight, Ryan joined the cast of the long running soap opera "Home & Away." Still living in an eastern suburb of Sydney (Australia), Ryan has an older brother and sister as well as a little sister. Interviewed in 1997 for a behind-the-scenes documentary on the show, Ryan admitted to wanting to be like his brother (a champion surfer), while "Big Bro" himself wanted to be an actor. It wouldn't take long for the former to come true if not the latter. While filming the show, an on-set tutor keeps him away from his hobbies all of which are sports related. These hobbies include playing rugby--even after he broke his ankle, forcing the script writers of "Home & Away" to include his crutches into the show's plot.

Ryan made his television debut in 1991 in the TV movie Melbourne Cup Day, then went on to have a long term recurring role in the Australian Soap series, Home and Away, playing Sam Marshall for an incredible 14 seasons between 1991-2005. During his time on the show, he was often seen on the beach with his surfboard which would foreshadow his future. . In 2008 he quit acting and trained for his permanent job as a lifeguard at the iconic Bondi Beach in Sydney, New South Wales.j He is often seen on the show by his nickname, Whippet. Ryan lives in Bronte, Sydney, where he grew up, and married his long time girlfriend, Gina Brackenridge, on Sept 1, 2012. They have two sons, Nixon, born in 2013 and Jett, born in 2017.
