‘La Reina del Sur’ Season 2 Drives Ratings Gains for Telemundo

  • Variety
The trials of Teresa Mendoza have been very good for Telemundo.

The sophomore season of the network’s hit series “La Reina del Sur” (Queen of the South) went out on a high note Monday, grabbing 2.2 million viewers and 1.1 million in the adults 18-49 demographic. That was strong enough to make Telemundo the No. 1 network over all broadcast rivals in “La Reina’s” 10 p.m. time slot.

The crime thriller telenovela starring Kate del Castillo has given a competitive boost to NBCUniversal’s Spanish-language network, solidifying its lead over rival Univision in primetime in adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. Throughout its 60-episode run, which began April 22, “La Reina” kept Telemundo broadcast network among the top 3 networks regardless of language in the adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 demos in the 10 p.m. Monday-Friday berth.

“We have had exceptional results from ‘La Reina’ especially in this period where the television industry is facing many challenges,

That means CBS, which topped last night in terms of total viewers, tied with Fox for second place among adults 18-49, the key demographic for advertisers on broadcast entertainment shows.

Univision was first in ratings with a 0.7 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, but fifth in total viewers with an average of 1.8 million, according to preliminary numbers. The music awards show was the only telecast on its schedule, averaging those Nielsen numbers.

Ratings: NBC’s ‘Bring the Funny’ Debut Brings the Viewers – But Not as Many as Fox’s Mlb All-Star Game
NBC’s new comedy competition series “Bring the Funny” brought in plenty of viewers with its opening act — and thanks to it’s opener, “America’s Got Talent” — Tuesday but not more than its biggest competition, the Mlb All-Star Game on Fox.

Fox was first in ratings with a 1.7 rating/9 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 7.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. Those numbers were put up by the American League’s 4-3 win over the National League, with the game filling Fox’s entire primetime block — and then some.

Due to the nature of live sports, those fast-national Nielsen numbers for Fox should be considered subject to significant adjustment. They should only go up.

ABC’s Farrah Fawcett special was the night’s most-watched show. On NBC, its annual “Red Nose Day” special added viewers but slipped in the key demo.

Season two of “La Reina,” which bows tonight at 10 p.m., has been in the works for eight years and lensed shot in eight countries with a hefty production budget by Telemundo standards. Del Castillo reprises her role as crime boss Teresa Mendoza, who was last seen going into witness protection
