James Wan's Mortal Kombat reboot will be hitting theaters in 2021. The video game franchise started back in 1992 and is one of the biggest games in history. The eleventh installment was just released and many are hailing it as the best game in the franchise's long history. With that being said, the live-action movies from the 1990s were always lacking and fans have been waiting for a proper adaptation for years now. Wan was first attached to the reboot in 2016. When he stated he wanted to take his time to develop the right movie.

Now, three years later, the Mortal Kombat reboot is actually happening. It was announced earlier this week that pre-production is gearing up to start at the end of this month in Australia. With that being said, we still have not learned who will be starring in the movie, though it has been heavily rumored Joel Edgerton will play Kano.

At long last, the much-discussed Mortal Kombat movie reboot is finally happening, with James Wan set to produce. We've been hearing about this project for several years now, with only the occasional update every handful of months. Though, actual progress seemed to be moving at a snail's pace. However, things have finally firmed up and Wan will be teaming up with New Line Cinema to bring the beloved and violent video game franchise to the big screen for modern audiences.

According to a new report, Mortal Kombat will shoot in South Australia, with pre-production set to get underway later this month. It's expected that the production will utilize Australian crews and will even do post-production and visual effects work down under. As previously reported, commercial director Simon McQuoid is set to helm the project, which will serve as his feature directorial debut. James Wan had this to say about it in a statement.

Thornton, Perkins, Walker win at Adg Awards

Warwick Thornton took home the top gong at last night’s Australian Directors’ Guild (Adg) Awards for outback Western Sweet Country.

It joins a slew of other prizes for the film, which follows an Aboriginal stockman who a kills white station owner in self-defence, including the Venice Film Festival Special Jury Prize, the Toronto International Film Festival Platform Prize, and six Aacta Awards, including Best Film and Best Direction.

Competing against Thornton for Best Direction in a Feature Film (budget $1 million or over) were Joel Edgerton for Boy Erased, Anthony Maras for Hotel Mumbai, and Garth Davis for Mary Magdelene.

The Adg Awards were held at Sydney’s City Recital Hall, with presenters including Rachel Griffiths, Claudia Karvan, Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward.

Joel Edgerton’s gay conversion therapy drama Boy Erased was named outstanding film in limited release at the GLAAD Media Awards presented in New York on Saturday night.

Now in their 30th year, the awards recognise and honour media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the Lgbtq community and the issues that affect their lives.

Produced by Edgerton’s Blue-Tongue Films, Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Perfect World Pictures’ Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Boy Erased faced stiff competition in its category.

The other nominees were 1985, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Disobedience, The Favourite, Hearts Beat Loud, A Kid Like Jake, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Saturday Church and We the Animals.

Among the other honorees, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story was named outstanding TV movie or limited series, Pose outstanding drama series and Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’s Trans Rights Under Attack outstanding variety or talk show episode.

Presenters named for Australian Directors’ Guild Awards

Rachel Griffiths, Claudia Karvan, Rachel Ward, Bryan Brown, Leah Purcell and Tracy Mann will be the presenters at the Australian Directors’ Guild Awards in Sydney on Monday May 6.

Writers-directors-performers Eliza Reilly and Hannah Reilly will host the awards at the City Recital Hall.

Warwick Thornton (Sweet Country), Joel Edgerton (Boy Erased), Garth Davis (Mary Magdalene) and Anthony Maras (Hotel Mumbai) will compete for best direction in a feature film budgeted at $1 million and above.

In the new category of best direction in a feature budgeted below $1 million, the nominees are Christopher Kay (Just Between Us), Donna McRae (Lost Gully Road), Dustin Feneley (Stray) and Jason Perini (Chasing Comets).

The awards cover the breadth of screen directing with categories across feature film, documentary, television, subscription VOD, commercial, short film, animation, online, music video and interactive media.

It follows two siblings who are summoned back to the family farm to await the inevitability of their father’s death. What initially appears to be a timeless ritual of loss and remembrance turns out to be something very different.

Lynn Andrews, Julie Oliver-Touchstone, Tom Nowicki, and Ella Ballentine co-star in the film which is shooting in Texas.

Joel Edgerton has signed on for a role in the Barry JenkinsAmazon series “The Underground Railroad,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Edgerton will play the part of Ridgeway, a slavecatcher. He joins previously announced cast members Thuso Mbedu, Chase W. Dillon, and Aaron Pierre.

The role will mark Edgerton’s first regular TV role in some time. He previously starred in the series “The Secret Life of Us” in his native Australia early in his career in addition to a handful of other TV roles. Nowadays, Edgerton is known for his film work. He most recently starred in, wrote, and directed the film “Boy Erased,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018. He made his feature directorial debut in 2015 with the Stx thriller “The Gift,” in which he also starred and wrote. "Star Trek" Jean-Luc Picard Series Adds Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway & Isa Briones To Cast

Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful) and Isa Briones (American Crime Story: Versace) are set as series regulars opposite Patrick Stewart in CBS All Access’ upcoming Star Trek series that will explore the next chapter of Jean-Luc Picard.

The new untitled Star Trek series, produced by CBS TV Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, features Stewart reprising his iconic role as Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and follows him in the next chapter of his life. Pill, Treadaway and Briones join previously announced cast members Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd and Evan Evagora.

At the 2019 Academy Awards, Mahershala Ali won for “Green Book.” He had previously prevailed in 2017 for “Moonlight.” He was the 29th winner of this award to be in his 40s. Sam Rockwell, who won in 2018 for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was the 30th, having picked up this prize eight months before he turned 50. A lucky 13 winners were in their 50s and 11 more were in their 60s. Paramount Pictures has slowly been developing their live-action adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons, and today we have an update for you.

According to That Hashtag Show, Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) is no longer attached to direct the film, but screenwriter Michael Gillio has turned in an updated draft of the script that the studio loves. The report says that “the script that had studio execs absolutely buzzing. The studio gave Gillio some notes to take back to his workshop but if all goes well, Paramount will get back to work on finding a director for the project.”

Rumour: Joel Edgerton wanted for Kano in Mortal Kombat movie

With screenwriter Greg Russo revealing last week that the long-gestating movie reboot of Mortal Kombat is now ready to go if and when it receives the green light from Warner Bros., That Hashtag Show is reporting that Joel Edgerton is wanted for a role in the film.

According to the site, Egderton is being eyed for the role of Kano, one of the video game series’ original characters, who appeared in the very first game back in 1992. A mercenary, criminal, and international fugitive, Kano is pursued to the Mortal Kombat tournament by Special Forces officer and nemesis Sonya Blade, Kano later becomes a general of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn’s forces.
