Ricky Gervais Backs World Elephant Day Call to Protect This Gentle Giant

Ahead of World Elephant Day (August 12) and an upcoming meeting on international wildlife trade in Geneva, Switzerland, Ricky Gervais has teamed up with Animal Defenders International (Adi) to call for elephant protections to be strengthened, not weakened.

Award-winning comedian and actor Ricky Gervais said: “I cannot imagine what Africa would be like without its elephants, but this could become a reality if those with the power to help fail to act. If you’re as sickened by scenes of these incredible animals being torn from their families or hacked to pieces then speak out, before it’s too late.”

African elephant populations have fallen by more than 50% in the last 40 years, with poaching, habitat loss, and human conflict decimating numbers. Fewer than 350,000 savannah elephants and 100,000 forest elephants remain.

Two proposals to be considered at the Cites (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) meeting, which

Says Rachel Riley:

‘I found out that eggs and dairy were making me ill, and once I gave them up I felt like a new person almost overnight. As a big foodie, to still get my fix of dairy and egg-free puddings I started eating in vegan restaurants and found that the food was delicious and interesting and I didn’t need to eat meat.

‘Then finally, after watching Blue Planet and going to the Galapagos in 2017 I learnt more about dodgy fishing practices and plastic pollution affecting wildlife,

Simon Cowell Donates £25,000 To Help UK Charity Rescue Dogs On South Korean Dog Meat Farm

Music mogul Simon Cowell is supporting animal charity Humane Society International's bid to close down a dog meat farm in South Korea and rescue the more than 200 dogs and puppies caged inside who would otherwise be killed and eaten.

The dogs spend their entire lives in small, barren metal cages but Hsi, which has so far permanently closed down twelve dog meat farms and saved nearly 1,400 dogs, are desperate to close it with Simon’s help.

Eating dog meat is fast declining in popularity in South Korea particularly among younger consumers. However, thousands of dog factory farms still exist, breeding around 2.5 million dogs a year for human consumption. Humane Society International works with dog meat farmers who want to leave the dying industry, and helps them switch to more humane alternative livelihoods such as mushroom or chili growing. The charity hopes its successful model will encourage the Korean government

Stars And Humane Society International/UK: Let Retired Military Dogs Live

Amidst growing public outcry that the Defence Animal Centre is planning to euthanize three retired military working dogs despite professional handlers offering to adopt them, Humane Society International/UK has urged the Centre to immediately reverse its decision.

The following is a statement from Hsi/UK Executive Director Claire Bass:

“We are extremely saddened to hear that the Defence Animal Centre plans to euthanize Kevin, Dazz and Driver, three retired military working dogs, despite outcries not only from the public but from the handlers who worked closely with them. If euthanized, these dogs, who served for years and saved countless lives, will have been robbed of the opportunity to spend their golden years in loving homes. After a lifetime of duty to protect humans, we have a duty of care to them, not to dispose of them like unwanted equipment.

“We urge the Defence Animal Centre to reconsider this decision,
