Buenos Aires — The last few years have caught Ventana Sur – Cannes Festival and Market’s biggest initiative outside France – taking place as the industry debated radical change. This year saw the Latin American industries in a state of transformation themselves, wracked by headwinds – Jair Bolsonaro’s government in Brazil – or looking to take advantage of negative scenarios, such as the Argentine peso plunge against the dollar.

But Ventana Sur is weathering these storms. Expanding from its film base into growth areas for the film industry – genre, animation, and now drama series and social media via a bolstered conference focus under co-director Ralph Haiek – Ventana Sur has evolved into an invaluable fixture in a round-the-year sales and co-production movie business, accelerating trading and expanding companies’ contact bases. Film Factory Acquires Natalia Meta’s “Psycho-sexual fantastic thriller’ ‘The Intruder’ (Exclusive)

Buenos Aires — In one of the biggest deals clinched at this year’s Ventana Sur, Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Ent. has acquired international sales rights outside Latin America to “El Prófugo” (“The Intruder”).

Described by its makers as a“psycho-sexual fantastic thriller,” “The Intruder” stars two of Argentina’s most internationally-rated actors: Erica Rivas, extraordinary as the cheated-upon bride in “Wild Tales,” and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, who earned international fame and a French Academy Cesar for Cannes critical and sales hit “Bpm (Beats Per Minute).”

The powerful cast also takes in Berlin best actor winner Daniel Hendler (“The Lost Embrace”) and Almodovar regular Cecilia Roth (“Pain and Glory”),

Being brought onto the market at this week’s Ventana Sur in Buenos Aires, “The Intruder” is produced by Benjamín Domenech, Santiago Gallelli and Matías Roveda at Argentina’s Rei Cine, which has built via international co-production into one of the most important producers in Latin America.

Nyff Review: ‘The Moneychanger’ Finds Federico Veiroj Bringing a Naked Empathy to the Crime Drama

Mr. Schweinsteiger (Luis Machín) ran a good game in Uruguay by helping unsavory folks launder money through him for a percentage. He was smart too, refusing to work with politicians knowing they’d eventually screw something up and drag his name down with them. Unfortunately, however, the man he willingly took under his wing as a logical successor and future son-in-law proved greedier than he was intelligent. Humberto Brause (Daniel Hendler) did what Schweinsteiger wouldn’t because the dollar signs were too attractive to be ignored and ultimately suffered the fate his boss always tried to avoid: prison. While that time away didn’t make him any smarter, Humberto did get luckier. More often than not he probably wished the opposite were true since good luck can still get you killed.

Toronto Film Review: ‘The Sleepwalkers’

Argentine writer-director Paula Hernández likes to explore what happens when characters from different worlds are thrown together. In her latest, “The Sleepwalkers,” which world-premiered in Toronto’s Platform competition before moving on to San Sebastian, the focus is on a discontented mother and her sullen, newly pubescent teen daughter, as they spend a New Year’s holiday in close quarters with three generations of extended family from the patriarchal side. , this intense family drama should see extensive festival play.

Although his wife Luisa and 14-year-old daughter Ana (striking beautiful Ornella D’elía) would prefer something different, the domineering Emilio (Luis Ziembrowski), insists on returning to his upper middle-class family’s rural manse. Surrounded by forests and streams, it’s home to his imperious widowed mother Memé (Marilu Marini), who is also hosting his brother Sergio (Daniel Hendler) and sister Inés (Valeria Lois), along with their respective broods.

Uruguayan auteur Federico Veiroj broadens his usual intimate dramatic scope to diminishing returns for his fifth feature, “The Moneychanger,” . Adapted from a novella by compatriot Juan Enrique Gruber, the period (mid-1950s to mid-1970s) tale centers on the eponymous character, an amoral currency exchanger, who winds up laundering some of the dirtiest money in Latin America during an era of military dictatorships, political expediency, brutality and corruption. Beaucoup festival travel is booked, but theatrical play is likely limited to Spanish-language territories.

The moneychanger of the title is the innocuous Humberto Brause, who also provides cynical voiceover narration, as the story jumps forward and back in time and moves between Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina and back again. Brause recounts how he got his start in the business of capital flight, learning from his boss, the refined Schwensteiger (Luís Machín), a classical music-loving gent who eventually becomes his father-in-law. Money can't buy you love, but Humberto Brause (Daniel Hendler) doesn't care for such sentiment. To this chicly dressed grifter, cash is the only true beloved. For the two decades (1950s-1970s) covered in Federico Veiroj's lightweight dark comedy, The Moneychanger, Brause takes advantage of the lax economic oversight in his home country of Uruguay. From his office in Montevideo and on numerous trips abroad, he oversees the buying and selling of currency itself, lining his own pockets (often literally whenever he crosses borders) and living the high life.

The Uruguayan Film Institute on Tuesday announced that Federico Veiroj's The Moneychanger will be the country's submission in the international feature film category of the 2020 Academy Awards.

AMC Network’s Streaming Service Shudder Snags Globo’s ‘The Night Shifter’

AMC Networks streaming service Shudder has picked up horror film “The Night Shifter” from Brazilian media giant Globo TV in its continued bid to diversify and expand its programming lineup. This is AMC’s second acquisition from Globo, after 10-episode series “Supermax,” a co-production led by Globo, Argentina’s Tvp, Mediaset Spain, Mexico’s TV Azteca, and Uruguayan channel Teledoce. The fictional reality prison-set series was created by Argentine director-producer-writer Daniel Burman, whose 2003 “The Lost Embrace,” won Berlin’s Grand Jury Prize and a best actor Silver Bear for Daniel Hendler.

“The Night Shifter” turns on morgue employee Stênio whose ability to speak with the dead makes for interesting nights. Stenio unleashes a curse that will endanger himself and his family after some conversations with the afterlife inadvertently reveal secrets of his own life.

'Norman', 'For Your Own Good' bookend 34th Miami Film Festival
Festival to screen 131 films, of which 36 are directed or co-directed by women.

Richard Gere will kick off festivities with the opening night gala screening of Norman: The Moderate Rise And Tragic Fall Of A New York Fixer. The festival runs from March 3-12.

The 34th annual Miami Film Festival (Mff) will close with the international premiere of Carlos Theron’s For Your Own Good from Spain starring José Coronado, Javier Cámara and Roberto Alamo.

Cuba is prominently featured in the programme. Kenny Ortega’s A Change Of Heart gets its world premiere and filmed in Miami and stars Gloria Estefan, Aimee Teegarden, Virginia Madsen, Jim Belushi and William Levy.

Fernando Perez’s Last Days In Havana (Últimos Días En La Habana) will receive its North American premiere. Uruguayan-Argentinian director Adrián Caetano, who competed in Cannes in 2006 with Chronicle Of An Escape, will debut The Lost Brother (El Otro Hermano) starring Leonardo Sbaraglia and Daniel Hendler.

Well, Sundance has finally drawn to a close for another year and last night, the Sundance Film Festival Awards Winners were announced in Park City, Utah.

We’ve listed the Sundance Film Festival Awards Winners below, including an official synopsis supplied by the organisers, but the clear winner and toast of the festival this year was Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation, the film that was picked up for a record-breaking $17.5 million earlier on this week. ‘Birth Of A Nation’ scored The U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award.

Sundance Channel acquires five festival titles
Films include Irish feature Mammal starring Barry Keoghan.

Sundance Channel Global has acquired five features from this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will exclusively premiere the titles shortly after the festival.

They include Mammal, The Fits, Spa Night, Jacqueline (Argentine) and My Friend In The Park (Mi Amiga Del Parque).

Mammal has been acquired from Picture Tree International Central and Eastern Europe, Iberia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.

The film, directed by Rebecca Daly, sees Australian actress Rachel Griffiths play a woman who befriends a young homeless man, played by Barry Keoghan, following the death of her son. Mammal is Irish director Daly’s second film following The Other Side Of Sleep, which debuted in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2011.

The Fits and Jacqueline (Argentine) have been acquired for Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Dutch Benelux, Iberia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.

Sundance Film Festival 2016 Midnight and Competition Movie Lineup

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.

The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

Sundance Institute has announced the 65 films selected for the Us Competition, World Competition and out-of-competition Next categories set to screen at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival (Jan 21-31) in Park City.

Us Dramatic Competition selections include Sian Heder’s Tallulah with Ellen Page and Allison Janney; Antonio Campos’ Christine; Clea DuVall’s feature directorial debut The Intervention; and Richard Tanne’s Southside With You, about Barack Obama’s first date with the First Lady.

Among the Us Documentary Competition selections are: Holy Hell by undisclosed; Jeff Feuerzeig’s Author: The Jt LeRoy Story; and Sara Jordenö’s Kiki.

'The Cambridge Squatter' wins San Sebastian films in progress award

Eliane Caffé’s film scooped the Industry Award prize.

The Cambridge Squatter, director Eliane Caffé’s latest feature project, has won the Industry Award at the films in progress showcase of San Sebastian Film Festival (Sept 18-26).

The film is a portrayal of homelessness in São Paulo, Brazil’s most populous city.

Caffé’s previous work has seen him receive major recognition in Brazil and abroad, including his 2003 feature The Storytellers, which won awards at festivals across South America.

Films in progress is the bi-annual initiative run jointly by San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Cinélatino, Rencontres de Toulouse to support Latin American films through post-production.

The Cambridge Squatter beat competition including new projects from directors Alejandro Fernández Almendras and Daniel Hendler.

113 films from 20 countries were submitted to the Films in Progress 28 initiative at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The final selection includes: "Aquí no ha pasado nada" (Much Ado About Nothing) by Alejandro Fernández Almendras (Chile),whose previous film, "To Kill a Man," won numerous prizes at international festivals and represented Chile at the Oscars last year; "Era o Hotel Cambridge" (The Cambridge Squatter) by Eliane Caffé (Brazil - France), "La Emboscada" (The Ambush) by Daniel Hendler (Uruguay - Argentina), "La Princesita" (The Princess) by Marialy Rivas (Chile - Argentina - Spain), "Rara" by Pepa San Martín (Chile - Argentina) and "Sobrevivientes de Rober Calzadilla" (Venezuela - Colombia).

Films in Progress gains strength as a not-to-be-missed gathering for Latin American production. Four of the films presented last year at San Sebastian, in Films in Progress 26, will be screened at this year’s Festival: Eugenio Canevari’s "Paula" will compete in the New Directors section and Jayro Bustamante’s "Ixcanul,"which has just been announced as Guatemala's Oscar submission, will screen in the Horizontes Latinos section, having won the Silver Bear – Alfred Bauer Award at the Berlin Festival.

Salvador de Solar’s "Magallanes," winner of the Films in Progress Industry Award and Aly Muritiba’s "Para minha amada morta" (To My Beloved), will also compete for the Horizontes Award. And another of the films presented last year, Sergio Castro’s "La mujer de barro" (The Mud Woman), was programmed in the Berlin Festival’s Forum section.

Among the projects revealed at the Toulouse event last March, Pablo Agüero’s "Eva no duerme" (Eva doesn't sleep) is programmed in the official competition; Sebastián Brahm’s "Vida sexual de las plantas" (Sex Life of Plants) is part of the New Directors selection; and Lorenzo Vigas’s "Desde allá" (From afar) will be presented in Horizontes Latinos after having participated in the official competition at the Venice Festival.

"Aquí No Ha Pasado Nada" (Much Ado About Nothing) Alejandro Fernández Almendras (Chile) Young, daring and lonely, Vicente spends his life at his parent’s home by the beach. These are days of relaxation, sea and partying with anyone who’s up for it. But one night of alcohol and flirting will change his life forever; he is accused of a hit-and-run crime in which a fisherman is killed. "I wasn’t driving", he says, but his memories are hazy and he says the boy at the wheel was the son of an influential politician. Power, manipulation and guilt will send his sweet summer holidays careering towards a bitter end. This is the third time the director has participated in Films in Progress. His previous film, "Matar a un hombre" (To Kill a Man), landed the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival.

"Era o Hotel Cambridge" (The Cambridge Squatter)

Eliane Caffé (Brazil - France) The Cambridge Squatter shows us the unusual situation of the Brazilian homeless and refugees who squat together in an abandoned building in downtown Sao Paulo. The daily tension caused by the threat of eviction reveals the dramas, the joys and the different points of view of the squatters.

"La Emboscada" (The Ambush) Daniel Hendler (Uruguay - Argentina) Martin Marchand throws himself into the political contest. As a result of his work in the social media, a traditional political structure invites him to join their list. Martin calls in technicians and advisors to create his campaign image. Over a weekend, immersed in the bucolic setting of a country house, they get down to designing the leader’s image. But an infiltrator seeking to obtain information on the coming electoral alliance creates an atmosphere of mistrust. The film, with the working title of "El Palomar," participated in the I Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum.

"La Princesita" (The Princess) Marialy Rivas (Chile - Argentina - Spain) A film inspired by true events in Southern Chile. A family sect only has one purpose and belief: a new order is necessary. Tamara, 11, is responsible for procreating the leaders of the new world. Disgruntled with her "lot”, Tamara’s sexual exploration with a boy in her year at school will have unexpected consequences, marking her violent transition from childhood to womanhood. Tamara will gain her freedom in a way she had never imagined. Marialy Rivas’s previous film, "Joven y alocada," participated in Films in Progress and landed awards at Sundance and Bafici, among other festivals.

"Rara" Pepa San Martín (Chile - Argentina) A story inspired by the case of a Chilean judge who lost the custody of her children for being a lesbian, told from the point of view of her eldest daughter Sara, aged 13. The screenplay is based on true events that could be related as a tale of lawyers and courthouses, lawsuits, claimants, defenders and victims, but instead, it will be the story of a family.

"Sobrevivientes" Rober Calzadilla (Venezuela - Colombia) 1988. The town of El Amparo. Border with Colombia. Chumba and Pinilla survive an armed assault in the channels of the Arauca River in which fourteen of their companions are killed in the act. The Venezuelan Army accuses them of being guerrilla fighters and tries to seize them from the cell where they are being watched over by a policeman and a group of locals to prevent them from being taken away. They say they are simple fishermen, but pressure to yield to the official version is eye-watering.

San Sebastian reveals Films in Progress titles

New projects from Alejandro Fernández Almendras, Eliane Caffé and Daniel Hendler are included in this year’s Films in Progress selection.

Films in Progress, the bi-annual initiative run jointly by San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Cinélatino, Rencontres de Toulouse to support Latin American films through post-production, will showcase six projects at this year’s San Sebastian festival (Sept 18-26).

Fernández Almendras, who won the 2014 Sundance world cinema grand jury prize for To Kill A Man, will present his new film Much Ado About Nothing, which was announced in Berlin this year.

The other projects include Eliane Caffé’s new film The Cambridge Squatter and actor Daniel Hendler’s debut feature The Ambush.
