Cleo has an older sister, Sylvia Laine, and a younger brother, Alexander Laine. They all appeared in The Thief of Bagdad (1940) as urchins in the Bagdad market.
Her sister, Sylvia Laine, died in 1989.
She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1979 Queen's Birthday Honours List and the DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1997 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to music.
Laine is the only singer ever to have been Grammy-nominated in the popular, classical and jazz categories.
She took her professional name from the character "Clio Dulaine" in Edna Ferber's novel "Saratoga Trunk". Years later she was to star in the 1971 London stage revival of "Show Boat", which is based on another of Ferber's novels.
She was awarded the 1989 Drama-Logue Award for Performance for the musical, "Into the Woods," at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
