Howard Lang was born on March 20, 1911 in Marylebone, London, England as Donald Yarranton. He was an actor, known for The Onedin Line (1971), The Crime of the Century (1956) and The Winds of War (1983). He died on December 11, 1989 in West Hampstead, London.

Was in the Royal Navy
He was a guest star in the second, third and fourth episodes of Doctor Who (1963). Coincidentally, he died on December 12, 1989, only six days after the final episode of the series was originally broadcast.
Continued his affiliation with the sea long after leaving the Royal Navy, sailing his own yacht, based at Chichester harbour. Fittingly, he is best remembered as the crusty sea dog Captain Baines from The Onedin Line (1971).
