Netflix reveals 21 new original movies for 2020

I missed this at the tail end of last week as the news dropped just as we were shutting down but Netflix has revealed a massive list of 21 new original movies bound for the streaming service and, no doubt, select cinemas for a short time, fo some of them at least.

Netflix

The titles were revealed via a massive Twitter thread and announced brand new movies from the likes of David Fincher, Ron Howard, Ben Wheatley, Spike Lee, and Tyler Perry, who has one of the first films to drop on 17th January.

Fincher has one of the most intriguing titles, the true story Mank, which revolves around the writing of one of the greatest movies of all time, Citizen Kane. Gary Oldman, Lily Collins, Charles Dance and Amanda Seyfried are amongst the impressive cast.

Ron Howard is behind Hillbilly Elegy, a feature starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close – an

Netflix Previews 21 Films Coming in 2020: David Fincher, Spike Lee, Charlie Kaufman, and More

Netflix Film has kicked off the new year by previewing the 21 original feature films confirmed for 2020 releases as of January 3. This list will surely grow as Netflix acquires content out of film festivals such as Sundance later this month, but for now Netflix has a 2020 slate chock full of auteur-driven original dramas. Netflix is coming off of its most lucrative year in cinema yet thanks to Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” among other titles, and it looks like the streaming giant will continue to soar in 2020 with works from David Fincher, Spike Lee, Dee Rees, Ben Wheatley, Charlie Kaufman, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and more.

Perhaps Netflix’s most anticipated 2020 feature film is “Mank,” the first feature directorial effort from David Fincher since the 2014 release of “Gone Girl.” The movie is expected to launch in the fall as one of the streamer’s top Oscar contenders.

‘Prince of Cats’: Spike Lee to Direct Legendary’s Take on the Minor Players in ‘Romeo & Juliet’
Spike Lee is set to direct a big-screen adaptation of Ron Wimberly’s 2012 graphic novel, “Prince of Cats,” for Legendary Entertainment. Described as “the B-side to Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’,” the story focuses on Tybalt, the son of Lady Capulet’s brother, Juliet’s short-tempered cousin, Romeo’s rival, and a character from Shakespeare’s tragedy.

Lee confirmed the project with IndieWire.

Set in the 1980s, in “Da People’s Republic of Brooklyn,” Lee’s favorite domain, the official synopsis for the novel reads: “‘Prince of Cats’ is played at an eighties block party in a NY where underground sword dueling blossomed alongside hip-hop, punk, disco and no wave. It’s the story of the minor players with Tybalt at the center.”

After being out of print for four years, the novel was re-worked and re-released in 2016.

The adaptation has been in development since July 2018, when it was announced

‘Better Things’ Recap: Cold Readings

‘Better Things’ Recap: Cold Readings
A review of “The Unknown,” this week’s Better Things, coming up just as soon as I show you a copy of the Fiddler on the Roof cast album…

For Season Three, Better Things dropped its original opening credits sequence scored to John Lennon’s “Mother,” opting for a shorter one where the song frequently changes. The season certainly hasn’t forgotten that Sam is a mom, and that she considers that role the most important part of her identity. But the focus much more often has been on who

The 3rd time’s the charm for ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ at the Grammys? It needs to watch out for ‘The Band’s Visit’

As of this writing “Jesus Christ Superstar” is predicted to win this year’s Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album with 82/25 odds. It’s a live recording of NBC’s Emmy-winning telecast, unlike the other nominees, which are studio recordings of traditional stage productions. Could that help or hurt “Superstar”?

This isn’t the show’s first time at the Grammys. The original concept album was nominated for Album of the Year back in 1972, but lost to Carole King for her second studio album, “Tapestry.” The very next year the Broadway cast recording was nominated for Album of the Year, but it lost too; Grammy voters picked “The Concert for Bangladesh” by George Harrison and Friends instead. So the iconic rock opera has a major Grammy Iou, especially considering how its creators — composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice — went on to win multiple Grammys themselves.

Will Sara Bareilles finally win a Grammy for ‘Christ’s’ sake?

Will Sara Bareilles finally win a Grammy for ‘Christ’s’ sake?
Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles has been nominated for a little bit of everything, but as she joked with her Tony Awards co-host Josh Groban earlier this year, she hasn’t actually won anything yet. Will “Jesus Christ Superstar” finally get her on the board at the Grammys?

Bareilles is nominated for Best Musical Theater Album for the soundtrack for “Jesus Christ Superstar,” the live NBC concert event that also earned her an Emmy bid for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress a few months ago. She played Mary Magdalene, and she’s one of the principal soloists credited with the nomination along with Alice Cooper, Ben Daniels, Brandon Victor Dixon, Erik Gronwall, Jin Ha, Norm Lewis, Jason Tam and Jesus himself, John Legend.
