They are big names and were big hits. But not on the big screen. The year turned out to be one of big wonders on the small screen -- all thanks to the proliferation of over-the-top or Ott platforms in India. “Love Per Square Foot is Quirkily Captivating” – Subhash K Jha Review

Love Per Square Foot

Starring Vicky Kaushal, Angira Dhar, Alankrita Sahai, Raghuvir Yadav, Supriya Pathak, Ratna Pathak Shah, Kunaal Roy Kapoor

Directed by Anand Tiwari

Not too many people write love letters these days. So let’s celebrate this love letter from actor-turned-director Anand Tiwari to Basu Chatterjee. Tiwari’s Love per Square Foot, released on Netflix and is to be released in theatres in April, falls in the space of those bitter-sweet dramas about the housing space that we saw in the 1970s.

You know, Basu Chatterjee Piya Ka Ghar, Bhim Sain’s Garonda, Rajinder Singh Bedi’s Dastak. This is Basu Chatterjee’s universe unplugged, updated and remixed, of train commuters, auto riders and bus travelers falling in love on the road.

With lot of sex, rather, sexy suggestions of sex, thrown in. In one sequence when Vicky Kaushal’s Sanjay Chaturvedi is close-dancing Angira Dhar’s Karina

Alankrita Shrivastava’s “Lipstick Under My Burkha” Gets U.S. Release

Lipstick Under My Burkha

Lipstick Under My Burkha” will have a U.S. theatrical run. Alankrita Shrivastava’s feminist film — which opened in India earlier this summer after initially being blocked for release by the nation’s Censor Board — is set to premiere September 8 in New York and Los Angeles. The film will open in additional cities in the following weeks.

Set in Bhopal, “Lipstick Under My Burkha” is about four very different women establishing their own personal and sexual autonomy. Per the film’s synopsis, “Rehana (Plabita Borthakur) is the titular burkha wearer who sings at open mics in defiance of her father’s warnings; Shirin (Konkona Sen Sharma) is a superstar saleswoman, but must keep this triumph a secret from her faithless husband; Leela (Aahana Kumra) is trying to juggle a Muslim lover, a Hindu fiancé, and her dream career as a bridal consultant; and Auntie Usha (Ratna Pathak Shah) secretly reads racy novels and lusts after her swimming instructor.”

Originally barred because of its its “lady oriented” story and “sexual scenes, abusive words, [and] audio pornography,” India’s Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (Fcat) overruled the Censor Board’s decision in April. Shrivastava made some voluntary edits and the film screened in India under an “A,” or adults certificate, the equivalent to the MPAA’s Nc-17 rating.

When the Censor Board originally deemed “Lipstick” inappropriate for theaters, Shrivastava — who wrote the film with an assist from Suhani Kanwar and dialogue from Gazal Dhaliwal — told Women and Hollywood that the film’s “feminist pulse” is what caused offense.

“The film explores the lives of women in a way that has perhaps not been done before in India,” she observed. “And confronting those stories and that perspective has somehow rattled [the Censor Board]… But more than anything the Board is not used to dealing with films where women want to have agency over their own bodies and their own desires.”

Lipstick” made its U.S. premiere in April at the Indian Film Fest of La. It served as the fest’s opening film and also kicked off the New York Indian Film Festival.

The comedy has taken home a slew of awards throughout its festival run, including the Audience Award at the Glasgow Film Festival, the Oxfam Award for Best Film on Gender Equality at the Mumbai Film Festival, and the Grand Jury Prize at the Films des Femmes Creteil. Shah and Sen Sharma also picked up acting awards from the London Asian Film Festival and Melbourne’s Indian Film Festival, respectively.

Alankrita Shrivastava’s “Lipstick Under My Burkha” Gets U.S. Release was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

“Mubarakan is full of brilliantly written humour” – Subhash K Jha Review

Mubarakan

Starring Anil Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Ileana D ‘Cruz, Aaathiya Shetty, Neha Sharma, Pavan Malhotra, Ratna Pathak

Directed by Anees Bazmee

Okay, not every movie experience has to be motivated by a socio-political purpose. Sometimes you just need to have fun at the movies.

I had loads of it last night in Mubarakan, one of the craziest homages to airheadeness in recent years.

Anees Bazmee’s film are deceptively naïve. They give the impression of being casual, flippant, inconsequential silly, goofy ….But sustaining this mood of anything-goes lunacy for more than two hours is no joke…and never mind the gush of jokey banter and situational comedy that has you scratching your head about who’s who and what’s what.

Very honestly I had a really tough time figuring out the plot line and the inter-relations of the characters. We were told at the start that Arjun Kapoor’s

“Lipstick Under My Burkha deserves a rousing ovation” – A Subhash K Jha Review

Lipstick Under My Burkha

Starring Ratna Pathak Shah , Konkona Sen Sharma, Ahana Kumra, Plobota Borthakur

Directed by Alankrita Shrivstava

An inherently murky claustrophobic air pervades this inconsistently brilliant hardhitting raunchy ‘ram’-com, very conscious of its responsibilities as post-feminist cinema on women’s powerment.

Here is a film that deserves a rousing ovation for bringing out the sexual fantasies and other unspoken yearnings of four middleclass women in a non-metropolitan milieu eking each out an exciting existence from the hard brutal raw material of her inert life.

But the film falls short of being genre-defining. Shrivastava whose earlier and only film Turning 30 only hinted at the post-feminist explosion of Lipstick Under The Burkha, takes charge with an all-knowing confidence of four women from different walks of life and belonging to separate generations.

Perhaps to offset the mess that they make of their lives, the lineup of women is a little too tidy and symmetrical.
