USA Network on Thursday announced that it has renewed Queen of the South for a fifth season. The pickup comes just hours ahead of the drama’s Season 4 finale (airing at 10/9c).

Ahead of tonight’s Season 4 finale, USA Network has picked up a fifth season of the hit drama series Queen of the South.

A co-production from Fox 21 Television Studios and UCP, Queen of the South is Thursday’s #1 cable drama in P18-49, P18-34, P25-54, and P2+ year to date.

Starring Alice Braga, Queen of the South is based on the bestselling book La Reina del Sur by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. It tells the powerful story of Teresa Mendoza (Braga), a woman who is forced to run from the Mexican cartel and seek refuge in America. In Season 3, Teresa struck out on her own, determined to build a new empire for herself. But as enemies old and new closed in, she realized that being queen would require more work — and more sacrifice — than she ever imagined.

USA Network has renewed “Queen of the South” for a fifth season.

The news comes ahead of the Season 4 finale, which airs tonight. The series is based on the book “La Reina Del Sur” by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. It stars Alice Braga has Teresa Mendoza, a woman who is forced to run from a Mexican drug cartel and seek refuge in the United States. In Season 4, Teresa expands to the East Coast by taking on New Orleans. But when new enemies emerge and familial trust is broken, she is forced to make difficult decisions that weigh heavy on her soul.

Dailyn Rodriguez and Ben Lobato serve as executive producers and co-showrunners, with David T. Friendly also executive producing. The series is a co-production between Fox 21 Television Studios and Universal Content Productions.

Call it Telemundo’s “Game of Thrones.” The Spanish-language network is hoping for a blockbuster premiere tonight for the long-awaited sophomore season of “La Reina del Sur,” the crime drama starring Kate del Castillo that ranks as Telemundo’s most-watched original series ever.

“La Reina” was a massive hit for Telemundo when it aired in early 2011. It also ushered in Telemundo’s strategy of veering from the traditional telenovela format into drama series designed to be renewed for multiple seasons. Telemundo’s “Super Series” run five nights a week for about 60 episodes rather than the 150 or more for telenovelas.

‘Queen of the South’ Renewed for Season 4 at USA Network With New Showrunners
Queen of the South” has been renewed for a fourth season at USA Network.

In addition, Dailyn Rodriguez and Ben Lobato have been promoted to co-showrunners and executive producers on the drama series, taking over for Natalie Chaidez. Rodriguez previously served as co-executive producer and has been part of the show’s writing staff since Season 2. Lobato previously served as supervising producer and has been part of the writing staff since Season 1.

“After 2 incredible years working with USA Network at the helm of ‘Queen of the South,’ I’m moving on to develop my own projects full-time with my friends at Fox and Fox 21 Television Studios,” Chaidez said. “I will miss the ‘Qots’ familia and fans, but I am proud to pass along the baton and champion the growth of co-showrunners Dailyn Rodriguez and Ben Lobato.”

On the heels of Queen of the South‘s recent Season 3 finale, the crime drama has been renewed for a fourth season to premiere in 2019. The pickup of the series, from Fox 21 TV Studios and Universal Cable Prods., comes with a change at the helm as Natalie Chaidez, who served as executive producer/showrunner for the past two seasons, is stepping down. She is succeeded by co-executive producer Dailyn Rodriguez, who is being elevated by executive producer/co-showrunner along with the series’ supervising producer Ben Lobato. The two new co-showrunners will executive produce alongside David T. Friendly.
