'Kalki' review: A smart investigative thriller where story is the hero

TollywoodThe film keeps you interested right through, maintaining an intrigue that is important for investigative thrillers.Krishna SripadaPrasanth Varma (of Awe fame) sets Kalki in the '80s Telangana village of Kollapuram - bell-bottom pants, radio, mention of India's World Cup campaign, and an Mla, who habitually rapes brides. At the heart of it is an investigative officer and encounter specialist Kalki (Dr. Rajasekhar), who nonchalantly struts around trying to untie the knots of politics and power in a conspiracy of smuggling, intensified by a few freak incidents. Kalki keeps you interested right through, maintaining an intrigue that is important for investigative thrillers. It is not your below-the-belt thriller that suddenly creates new revelations to spruce things up in the story. The audience is not only watching, but also trying to untie the knots themselves. That is why at times, the revelations don't leave you open-mouthed. You have solved it

“Milan Talkies, Tigmanshu’s Tenderest Tale” – A Subhash K Jha Review

Milan Talkies

Starring Ali Faizal, Shraddha Srinath, Ashutosh Rana,Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sanjai Mishra

Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia

“I’ve heard,” says the inexperienced lover-boy, “that in the beginning of a romance there is a lot of sex. And then it wears down to just once in a while on Karwa Chauth or whatever.”

Hearing Ali Fazal drawl these words of artless candour in the projection room of a single-theatre in Allahabad, is a pleasure beyond measure.

Milan Talkies, a spiffily written expertly enacted smalltown hormonal romance. It conveys just the right ingredients of smothered passion and unabashed swagger to make the proceedings pungent and real.

In fact the writing (Dhulia and Kamal Pandey) is much cleverer and wittier than what it seems.

There is exchange at a crucial point in the narration where a character asks the hero’s friends—a butcher by profession—“Tu itna Pak-pak kyon kar raha hai?

Shraddha has worked in Kannada and Tamil films, with projects like U Turn, Kaatru Veliyidai and The Villain to her credit.?

"The first step is to wait till Milan Talkies is out. Some calls have come but I can't take that too seriously. I want people to watch me perform, and see how I look on the big screen and then call me," Shraddha informed. "I am in no rush. There is enough work down south. I am going to take it easy. I am not someone who is star-struck about Bollywood and think 'ke abhi 'Milan...' release ho jaegi toh main yeh karungi Bollywood mein'.

“Sonchiriya Is Much Much More Than A Brilliant Dacoit Drama” A Subhash K Jha Review

Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpai, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana, Ranvir Shorey

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey

Some of our actors are so inured in brilliance we’ve ceased to notice their power. Ranvir Shorey is one of them. He just blends into the bleeding colours of brilliancy in this exceptional film set in the dark desperate world of dacoits in the confounding ravines of the Chambal valley.

By singling out Shorey’s brilliance I don’t mean to undermine the other performers, most of whom are so skillfully effective, they seem to have been born in the hungering shadows of their ever-renewable excellence.

But then the point here is not the brilliance. It is how the rites of accomplished filmmaking are applied to a solid narration that are on your mark and all set to go even before we are fully able to grasp the wide spectrum of characters on the run.

Sonchiriya - Bodyguards to protect dacoits from dacoits

Sonchiriya promises to be a power packed action film giving a glimpse of the glorious years of dacoits in central India. Shot in the valleys of Madhya Pradesh, Sonchiriya presents an ensemble cast with an intriguing storyline. The story of Sonchiriya is set in the 1970s showcasing a small town ruled and dominated by dacoits. Multiple gangs fight over the struggle to attain power. The cast dons fierce avatars in sync with the theme of the film.

The surprise here is that our ?Dacoits? from Bollywood had a fear about the real dacoits from Chambal. It seems the real dacoits are still active in some parts of the Chambal, where most part of the film has been shot. So, a huge group of bodyguards were appointed to protect the cast and crew from the real dacoits. Reportedly, the bodyguards used to take all the cast and crew safely from their vanity to the set safely,

“Simmba is a relevant larger-than-life over-the-top drama on social awakening” – Subhash K Jha Review

Starring Ranveer Singh,Ajay Devgan, Sara Ali Khan. Ashutosh Rana

Directed by Rohit Shetty

As far as getting a kick out of the movie-viewing experience is concerned, there is nothing like a larger-than-life over-the-top drama on social awakening.

Simmba is a kick in the groin for all rapists, and potential rapists. I doubt rape will decline after this film. But at least those who think of violating women would blush a bit.

The second-to-last sequence of this loud but effective anti-rape/anti-corruption film shows ‘Simmba’ Ranveer Singh sitting in the courtroom with his mentor ‘Singham’ Ajay Devgan. The two khaki-clad praise-vardi vigilantes come to the one decisive conclusion: cops need to put the fear of God and Law into rapists before this heinous crime winds its way out of the male libido.

Until then, there are the encounters of the cop kind. This film makes a disturbing case for bumping off legally-absolved rapists,
