Ahmed Malek signs for Patricia Chica's 'Montreal Girls' (exclusive)
Malek is best known internationally for his performance as a Michael Jackson-obsessed teenager in Egyptian Oscar entry Sheikh Jackson.

Rising Egyptian actor Ahmed Malek, who was a Screen International Arab Star of Tomorrow in 2017, has signed for the lead role in Canadian director Patricia Chica’s coming-of-age drama Montreal Girls.

Malek, who has a growing following at home and is best known internationally for his performance as a Michael Jackson-obsessed teenager in Egyptian Oscar entry Sheikh Jackson which premiered at Toronto last year, will play an Egyptian student who heads to Montreal on a medical school scholarship.

'The Odyssey' to close San Sebastian
Biopic based on the life of Jacques Cousteau.

The 64th San Sebastian Festival (Sept 14-24) is to close with the world premiere of The Odyssey, a film based on the life of Jacques Cousteau, written and directed by Jérôme Salle.

The €35m film looks at the challenging relationship between the underwater exploration pioneer and his son Philippe. The screenplay is based on the books Mon père, le Commandant Jacques-Yves Cousteau, by Jean Michel Cousteau, and Capitaine de la Calypso, by Albert Falco.

Salle is perhaps best known for writing action romance The Tourist, starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, and directing both Cannes 2013 closer Zulu and César-nominated Anthony Zimmer, which starred Sophie Marceau.

The Odyssey stars Lambert Wilson, Pierre Niney and Audrey Tautou in the parts of Cousteau, his son Philippe and his wife, respectively.

Short Film 'Day Before Yesterday' Wins an 8th Award

During the last week-end, Day Before Yesterday (my review), an eleven-minute short film directed by Patricia Chica, won its 8th award at the Sacramento International Film Festival.

This means that this short psychological thriller about an amnesiac woman received the Outstanding Foreign Short Film Award. The week before that, Patricia Chica's work (starring Michelle Boback, JacquesGodin, Richard Robitaille and Leif Anderson) had won the Platinum Remi Award (1rst Place for Best Directing - Short Film category) at the WorldFest - Houston International Film Festival.
