Film Review: Kung Fu Yoga (2017) by Stanley Tong

With “Kung Fu Yoga,” Jackie Chan reunites with one of his regular collaborators, Stanley Tong, for their second movie that has a touch of Bollywood flavoring.

Jack (Jackie Chan) is an archaeology professor who along with his assistants team up with Ashmita (Disha Patani) an Indian Professor to locate India’s lost Magadha treasure. A series of globe-trotting adventures take place as they compete with Randall (Sonu Sood) and his mercenaries, and one of their own, Jones Lee (Aarif Rahman) to find the diamond artifact known as the “Eye of Shiva” that will lead them to the treasure.

The difficulty when reviewing a new Jackie Chan film is the legacy of what has come before it. With a career spanning five decades and numerous classics of cinema comes a certain expectation. So it is important to judge “Kung Fu Yoga” on its own individual merits as given

Co-Prod Treaties, Film Fund On the Agenda As 3rd Annual Brics Film Festival Kicks Off

  • Variety
Durban — With world leaders arriving in Johannesburg this week, with an aim toward boosting trade ties and stimulating the economies of the five member states at the annual Brics summit, delegations from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa gathered in Durban to highlight the countries’ cultural output at the 3rd annual Brics Film Festival.

Running parallel to the Durban Film Festival, the Brics festival opened Sunday night with a splashy ceremony featuring live performances and short films from each of the member states. At the Durban FilmMart on Monday, a delegation of filmmakers and cultural representatives from each nation gathered to look at how the festival – still in its infant stages – can set the groundwork for greater collaboration in the years ahead.

“We do have a lot more in common with Brics countries than we have with our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world,” said South African filmmaker Xoliswa Sithole,

Rumble in the Bronx was the film that, finally, broke Hollywood’s doors down for Jackie Chan. Well, with Kung Fu Yoga, Chan reunites with his Bronx director Stanley Tong for a Chinese-Indian co-production that, on paper, sounds like it could be Armour of God 4 in all but name. Yes, this is yet another “Jackie Chan, Treasure Hunter” movie, a la Chinese Zodiac – only this time Chan and co. are exploring not only Chinese history but also India’s rich and religious heritage.

World-renowned archaeology professor Jack and his team are on a grand quest to locate a lost ancient Indian treasure, when they are ambushed by a team of mercenaries and left for dead. Using his vast

Home Entertainment Review: Kung Fu Yoga

Director: Stanley Tong

Starring: Jackie Chan, Disha Patani, Amyra Dastur

Now before you ask, no, Kung Fu Yoga is not related to Kung Fu Panda. Nor is it that closely related to either Kung Fu or Yoga. It’s actually a lot like how I’d imagine it would be if Indiana Jones went on a bender with the Hangover gang, and decided to make a Fast and the Furious film. Jackie Chan, plays Jack, the most amazing archaeology professor in all of China – at least this is what the audience is told repeatedly. Jack is approached by a fellow professor, Ashmita who has travelled all the way from India to enlist Jack’s help tracking down the lost Magadha treasure. The pair, joined by Jack’s assistants, then take-off on a globe-trotting adventure as they attempt to find the artefact before it falls into the wrong hands.

From the freezing Tibetan ice caves, to the scorching beaches of Dubai, they find themselves travelling around the world to locate all the pieces required to unlock the secrets of the treasure. Unfortunately, they are not alone in their search as the descendant of a rebel leader Randall (Sonu Sood) also seeks the treasure and will do anything he can to make sure he gets it.

Kung Fu Yoga is a cultural collaboration between China and India, with both the cast and cultural philosophies incorporated into the film. This is not unusual for Chan who has featured Kung Fu and Buddhist philosophies in his past films. In Kung Fu Yoga he even manages to incorporate this into his fighting, talking through

Filmart: Chinese film industry panel calls for quality output
Speakers included Kung Fu Yoga director Stanley Tong and Jq Pictures chairman Qin Hong.

Chinese film producers need to improve the quality of their output to entice a mobile-obsessed youth back into cinemas, said speakers at the “What’s Next For The Chinese Film Market?” conference at Hong Kong Filmart (March 13).

The panel addressed recent issues in the mainland film market including the steep decline in box-office growth, escalating talent costs and increased competition from made-for-internet content.

Kung Fu Yoga director Stanley Tong observed that a large proportion of China’s audience was born after 1995 and prefers to consume internet movies rather than theatrical films.

“They are addicted to mobile devices and don’t visit the cinema regularly, so we need to figure out how to attract this audience,” said Tong, adding that 70% of the audience is now located in China’s third and fourth-tier cities, and skews towards women and couples, which explains
