‘Aladdin’ to Soar Above Box Office Competition Over Memorial Day Weekend
When Disney first released “Aladdin” in 1992, Bill Clinton was just settling in to the Oval Office, “Game of Thrones” wasn’t much more than a book idea percolating in the mind of author George R.R. Martin, and Johnny Carson was wrapping up his stint as “Tonight Show” host.

In some ways, 2019 feels like a whole new world. But Disney is hoping that even 27 years later, the prospect of seeing flashy musical numbers set to timeless tunes like “One Jump Ahead” and “Friend Like Me” will entice moviegoers young and old into theaters for an updated take on “Aladdin,” the story of a charming Arabian street rat who stumbles upon a genie’s magical lamp.

“There’s a lot of goodwill toward these characters,” said Jeff Bock, a media analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “I think it will work for families over Memorial Day weekend.”

Aladdin” is expected to earn a solid

Florence Pugh, James Norton Talk ‘Little Women’ On-Screen Romances With Timothée Chalamet & Emma Watson
Florence Pugh and James Norton gushed over their “Little Women” co-stars Timothée Chalamet and Emma Watson while at the Cannes Film Festival.

The actors spoke to Variety‘s Marc Malkin on the red carpet at the Chopard Trophy Awards, where Pugh was honored. The 23-year-old actress was chosen for the award by a jury consisting of former Chopard Trophy recipients such as Marion Cotillard, Gael García Bernal and Lea Seydoux, Cannes’ director Thierry Fremaux, Variety’s Steven Gaydos, and Chopard’s Caroline Scheufele.

Pugh and Chalamet’s characters Amy March and Laurie wed in Louisa May Alcott’s classic — to little fanfare. “We didn’t have a wedding,” Pugh bemoaned. “That’s still probably yet to come. We’ll have to ask his permission before that happens.”

Although Pugh didn’t get a wedding, the actress did get to wear matching outfits with her co-star, which she said “was the most important thing.

‘Lady and the Tramp’ Will Reinvent Problematic Siamese Cat Song, Feature New Music From Janelle Monae (Exclusive)

  • Variety
Grammy winner Janelle Monae will contribute new music to the Disney Plus streaming title “Lady and the Tramp,” in addition to her voice role in the live-action reboot.

Monae will perform two original songs for the film, led by Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux. Monae’s artist collective Wondaland is also “reinventing” a track from the original 1955 animated movie, individuals close to the project said.

That would be “The Siamese Cat Song,” originally recorded by Peggy Lee for the feline duo Si and Am in the animated version. Those characters and their famous refrain — “We are Siamese if you please / We are Siamese if you don’t please” — have long been considered a cringe-worthy depiction of Asian culture.

Wondaland contributors Nate “Rocket” Wonder and Roman GianArthur are working on a different take for the pair, who in the new film are not Siamese cats, the insiders added. Walt Disney Studios confirmed Monae’s musical involvement,

Box Office: ‘Aladdin’ Eyes $80 Million Opening Over Memorial Day Weekend

  • Variety
Disney’s “Aladdin” is expected to soar at the domestic box office when it debuts over Memorial Day weekend.

The studio’s latest live-action remake should earn $80 million when it opens May 24, according to early tracking. Box office watchers believe ticket sales could near $100 million through Monday, when kids are out of school for the holiday. That number could fluctuate in the three weeks leading up to the film’s arrival as Disney finalizes its marketing rollout. We can only assume those efforts include taking extra steps to assure audiences that Will Smith’s disturbingly blue Genie, which caused hysteria on Twitter after the first trailer dropped, won’t be so jarring on the big screen.

If estimates hold, that launch would be closer to recent Disney re-imaginings like Jon Favreau’s “Jungle Book” ($103 million) and “Beauty and the Beast” with Emma Watson ($174 million). “Jungle Book” raked in an impressive $966 million globally,

A Complete Guide to the Nxivm Trial

Although the trial of Keith Raniere, the alleged mastermind behind the self-empowerment cult Nxivm, doesn’t begin until the end of April, the court proceedings have already given us plenty of drama. There’s been fainting in court, child pornography charges and, as with all things 2019, a brief appearance by attorney Michael Avenatti. And in a surprising twist, all of the defendants in the Nxivm case, with the exception of Raniere, have pleaded guilty to some of the charges against them, meaning that at least some of his former acolytes

Daniel Radcliffe Explains Why He’s Avoided Blockbusters After Harry Potter

Child stars are notorious for turning into weird adults, which actually isn’t terribly surprising when you consider that their formative years are spent with the world watching their every move. So, it’s a bit of a miracle that the three child stars of the Harry Potter franchise – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint – have all turned out to be pretty normal.

Of the three, though, it’s Radcliffe who’s been keeping the busiest in the industry, always eager to prove that he’s not just a pair of glasses, a wand and a rather fetching scar. His roles since leaving Hogwarts have included, among other things, a critically acclaimed turn in The Woman in Black, portraying Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, playing someone cursed with devil horns in Horns and, uh, a fart-propelled corpse in Swiss Army Man. We kid you not.

Now, in a recent interview,

Harry Potter: 25 Things Wrong With Hermoine Granger We All Choose To Ignore

In the Harry Potter series, we had the Golden Trio. These three characters made Harry Potter what it was and without them there would be no series. While Harry was the main protagonist, he didn’t have all the attributes that would have enabled him to take down Voldemort. His friends also got separate personalities and abilities that made them stand out in their own ways. Rivaling Harry in the best character polls is Hermione Granger. A sizable portion of the fandom consider Hermione to be the best character in the series due to her multitude of capabilities as well as her mature personality.

Hermione’s star was made brighter after Emma Watson portrayed her in the Harry Potter film series as she was quite a looker and was very close in personality to Hermione Granger. While Harry and Ron have some people who aren’t fans of them, Hermione never has anyone dislike her.
