Vikings Season 6: A Fan's Plea

Laura Akers Feb 12, 2019

Ahead of Vikings' final season, we urge the show to return to its former heights and give fans a fitting goodbye...

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

Warning: contains spoilers for Vikings seasons one to five.

When I started reviewing Vikings a few years ago, I did so mostly to share my surprise. I, like others, had stayed away from this History Channel show because, well, being on the same channel as Storage Wars, Ice Truckers, and every Hitler quasi-documentary known to man, I assumed it was going to be a testosterone-fuelled mess. But eventually I tuned in because a friend told me to check it out and, you know, Vikings…

And what I found, to my delight and amazement, was something very different and altogether better than either the marketing or the context had suggested.

And so I spent the next two seasons

‘Polar’ Review (Netflix)

Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Fei Ren, Ruby O. Fee, Matt Lucas, Robert Maillet, Anthony Grant, Josh Cruddas, Lovina Yavari, Ayisha Issa, Pedro Miguel Arce, Anastasia Marinina, Martin Zolotarev, Richard Dreyfuss | Written by Jayson Rothwell | Directed by Jonas Åkerlund

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Polar is the latest graphic novel adaption in the world of cinema, in particular, to hit Netflix. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as retired assassin Duncan Vizla hunted down by the shady assassin syndicate who once employed his services as a seasoned killer. The result, while enjoyable on occasion with a multitude of outrageous action set pieces is on a whole overabundantly dependable on a repellent colour grading and boorish style with peevish misogyny.

Polar offers a great deal of bloodshed and abstract character yet sadly thinks they’re the highlight of a picture that denies the audience even a minuscule or basic form of personal engagement or depth.

The director of Netflix’s Polar teases sequel possibilities

Jonas Åkerlund, the director of Netflix’s original film Polar, has teased potential sequel possibilities should they get the green light.

The latest original film to make its way to Netflix viewers around the world is Jonas Åkerlund’s Polar, an adaptation of a graphic novel from author Víctor Santos.

The film stars Mads Mikkelsen as a retired hitman, who is forced to protect himself by any means necessary when his old employer arranges his assassination. While we don’t know if there will be a sequel for the film, Åkerlund has spoken to Screen Rant about what future films could entail:

“It’s supposed to be based on the first book, but we kind of borrowed a little bit from the second and the third book as well. And we also added some stuff that aren’t even in the book. So, we had the freedom of working with

Second Opinion – Polar (2019)

Polar, 2019.

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund.

Starring Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Richard Dreyfuss and Matt Lucas.

Synopsis:

The world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla, is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger killers.

As appealing as a John Wick-esque action-thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen in the vengeful assassin role might seem on paper, this sketchy adaptation of Víctor Santos’ 2012 webcomic fatally overestimates its own charm and creativity, resulting in a loud and energetic yet mostly empty movie.

Duncan Vizla (Mikkelsen) is a legendary trigger-man approaching the age of 50, at which point his employer, the Damocles Agency, will force him into retirement. But with Damocles’ head honcho Mr. Blut (Matt Lucas) set to pay out a princely, multi-million dollar pension to Vizla, he

Jonas Akerlund on ‘Polar,’ Mads Mikkelsen, Working with Netflix

  • Variety
Released by Netflix on Friday, action-thriller “Polar,” a Netflix Original Movie starring Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”), stands about half-way between Ott comic noir and big multiplex action-thriller.

It opens with an aerial shot creeping over woods towards a mansion somewhere in Chile as a motley squad of assassins moves in for the kill. The target, Michael (Johnny Knoxville), 50-ish, a former hitman himself, is now snorting coke and popping a pill before sex by the pool with babelicious Sindy (Rubu O.Fee).

Cut, after Michael’s dispatch, to Mikkelsen, playing Duncan Vizla, aka the Black Kaiser, the world’s No. 1 assassin, going through a pre-retirement medical checkup with an air of near zen-like calm. It’s as if he’s living in another world. Which is a way he is. As anticipated in the opening scene, in its blood-splattered film title, caricature of the hit squad as unconscionable psychopaths, and camera

Movie Review – Polar (2019)

Polar, 2019

Directed by Jonas Akerlund.

Starring Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Richard Dreyfuss and Matt Lucas.

Synopsis:

A talented hitman is nearing retirement and will receive an eight-million dollar pension on his fiftieth birthday. His employers send out a team of younger assassins to take him out before his big payday.

Based on the Dark Horse Comics of the same name, Polar follows Duncan Vizla (Mads Mikkelsen), an extremely talented hitman who is haunted by the actions of his career. As he finishes one final job, he flees to a remote cabin in Montana, waiting for his birthday to retire from the life. And with a blood splattered opening sequence, audiences immediately know what they’re in for. Featuring a brief Johnny Knoxville cameo as a similarly retired killer partying away with copious amounts of drink and drugs. He’s fooled by a seductive assassin who lulls him into

Film Review: ‘Polar’

  • Variety
Film Review: ‘Polar’
It would be one thing if “Polar” were director Jonas Åkerlund’s satirical send-up of American hyper-stylized, hyper-violent exploitative genre pictures. But it’s not — or at least it arrives a decade too late to register as such. What’s clear is that this abhorrent actioner (an adaptation of Victor Santos’ graphic novel “Polar: Came From the Cold”) about a morally conflicted hitman with a price on his head is vulgar auteurism at its most depraved. It even has the audacity to cloak many of its repugnant sentiments and debauchery in the guise of female empowerment. Gratuitous sex, gruesome torture, copious amounts of gore, and garish imagery populate the picture. Those qualities might be reason enough for some to watch, although a great many others would do well to scroll right past it on their Netflix feeds.

Top assassin Duncan Vizla (Mads Mikkelsen), known in his field by the nickname “the Black Kaiser,
